  1. On Thursday Rangers get the chance to right a huge wrong when Prógres Niederkorn come to Ibrox. I don't need to tell anyone that they surprisingly put us out of the Europa league at the first Qualifying round two years ago. Prógres had never won a game in Europe and scored just one goal. Even although Rangers only managed a 1-0 win at Ibrox it was unthinkable that a team who had never won in Europe and had only ever scored one goal could put the mighty Glasgow Rangers out of Europe. Niederkorn soaked up Rangers early pressure and gradually started to insert themselves more and going into the second half looked more and more dangerous. Disaster struck for the Gers as Olivier Thill crossed for Francoise to finish at the near post. Shortly after that a Sebastian Thill free kick, crossed in at pace, managed to avoid everybody and the ball ended in the back of the net. Rangers had incarcerated what is judged as their worst ever European result. Pedro Caixinha the Rangers manager stood by a hedge telling Rangers supporters that things would improve but after our worst ever 1-5 home defeat against Celtic and losing to Aberdeen for the first time in 26 years his days were numbered and after more poor results he lasted a total 229 days in the job before he was sacked. He goes down in history as the Rangers manager to last the shortest ever time. This was the Rangers team that day. 1 Foderingham 9 Miller 2 Tavernier 4 Cardoso 8 Jack 18 Rossiter (Substituted for Herrera at 77') 5 Wallace 24 Bates 19 Kranjcar 20 Morelos (Substituted for Dálcio at 45') 21 Candeias (Substituted for Windass at 58') Substitutes 7 Dálcio 11 Windass 15 Herrera 23 Holt 25 Alnwick 33 Waghorn 40 McCrorie Looking at that team only Foderingham, Tavernier, Jack and Morelos are still at the club. Replacing Morelos with Dálcio at half time in retrospect is an "Oh my god" moment. Rangers are a completely different beast under Stevie Gerrard so dare I say we really should be strong favourites to win this tie at ease. Therein may lie the danger that even under Stevie G our biggest problem has been with teams soaking up pressure and hitting us with a sucker punch. While under Caixinha with Kranjcar in the team Rangers never ever looked fit and that is completely different to the team at the moment. Rangers look like a super fit high pressing dream machine. Surely with this team lightening cannot strike twice in the same place? Looking at the Prógres team that played against Cork they still have five players who were involved the last time round. The standout name is Sebastian Thill who scored their second goal that knocked the Gers out. Their goalkeeper Sebastian Flauss was injured in the first half the last time we played them but unfortunately we hardly made their substitute keeper make a save. I hate using the word revenge as it sounds as if you have to win at all costs for past performances. I think we should have that mindset in every game whether we lost to a team in the past or not. I am pretty sure Stevie G will have that mindset as well. European money has become a major player on how much you can improve your team and Dave King has stated in the past that we need to get through to the European play-off rounds on a regular basis to keep improving the team to get to the level we need to be at. We really can't let teams who can't even play in their own stadium get in our way. While I have already booked a hotel in Luxembourg for the return game I will be happy to go there with the tie already decided by an emphatic win at Ibrox. Picking a Rangers team is a nightmare at the moment as we have two players for every position. I think McGregor is making a lot of mistakes at the moment so I will go with: Foderingham Tavernier Goldson Katic Barisic Davis Jack Stewart Jones Arfield Morelos To be honest I am not a Goldson fan and would prefer Edmundson and Katic but I think you can set Goldson's name in stone to play. Come on the Gers, get intae them!

  2. When DK released a statement in 2017 , stating the boycott was over and that fans were free to buy strips as a new improved deal had been struck with SD , he was being disingenuous, we paid £3 million to avoid SD taking personal action against DK and PM , also it ended the 7 year deal , and we reposed a new deal , allowing SD to match any deal in perpetuity , if they matched the terms they got to win the deal , if not the entire deal finished . Ok so far so good , it looks straight forward , what actually happened next , was Rangers entered deals with Hummel and Elite and never even informed SD never mind allowing them to look at the terms of these deals , SD took us to court and won , we ignored these court orders and carried on , we were taken to court again and lost again , and again and yet again . Our company secretary has had his professional reputation shredded , for the 4th time , and our reputation for sticking to the terms of our deals is in the bin . We owe money to SD for last year , this year and as of next year SD gets the contract back , the £1 million c is quoted by the judge as not being necessarily suitable to cover SD losses , however as of yet this part hasn’t been fully disclosed . The only glimmer of hope is that the appeal we have in miraculously wins the day , however given that 3 or 4 senior judges have handed us our arses on a plate I would find this highly unlikely .

  3. This ongoing issue is a tricky one to comment accurately on when we don't know the detail of the contracts. I have sympathy for the Rangers board as they're dealing with the biggest of all snakes in Mike Ashley whilst trying to rid us of a 'deal' that benefited SD a lot more than it did our club. Years long litigation was always going to happen and it's frustrating for fans when we read about setbacks like the one of the other day. With that in mind, it's vital the club ensure our lawyers are prepared properly and offering the correct advice. However, even then, you're reliant on finding a sympathetic judge and it seems the common sense argument is no longer in vogue It's now time for Rangers to regroup and consider their strategy and legal advice. Should person A or B fall on their sword in that sense? Perhaps but that just means more time and money set aside for their replacement(s) to get up to speed on a legal argument that is already several years long. And it still wouldn't guarantee success. In fact, success might not be possible, just finding the lowest possible cost to ensure the retail money we make going forward is ours, not someone else's. Let's not forget the terms of the retail contract and the fact we're still lowed money from it. Let's not forget who the real enemy is. “Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.” - George Bernard Shaw. Unfortunately, we don't have a choice.

  4. What I’ve never understood is how you give SD the chance to match the terms of a third party offer without breaching contractual confidence with the third party. Who would make an offer to Rangers, knowing it will be disclosed to a competitor like SD?

  5. I don't think you'll be far out with that team but I'd expect more of a 4-3-2-1 again tomorrow night. McGregor will start as I agree he does need to work on his sharpness a little and I'd hope Goldson starts as well as he remains our best defender. I'd fancy Katic will start alongside him despite his mistake the other day and it will be up to Edmundson and Erlander to displace what I'd consider our first choice pairing for the moment - though that may well change, especially if the manager fancies going with a three at some point. Tav and Barisic are our two best full backs (on paper at least) and they have important roles in this formation as it's them who provide the width with the attacking players deployed more centrally than in the alternative 4-2-3-1 the manager also likes. The Croatian seems to have responded well to criticism so far this summer and I'm keen to see him grab his second chance with both hands. The deeper midfield three will be Jack, Aribo and Davis as those three have also impressed most in pre-season so far with Kamara a little bit off the boil. Jack and Davis will allow us to control the game in midfield with Aribo able to get into forward areas. Further forward that will allow Jones, Arfield and Morelos to start the game with with the first two players playing inside forward roles and Arfield in particular tasked with giving quick support to Alfredo. It's positive that we have several other players capable of coming into the team (or indeed starting). Guys like Polster, Halliday, Edmundson, Fod, Kamara, Docherty, Ojo, Stewart and Defoe have also done fine when called upon so I've no issues if any of them play tomorrow night from the start or later in the game.

  6. I know we've said this a lot but it is amazing how differently people see certain players. For me it's the other way around. Goldson for me is rock solid and our best defender. Katic can be excellent for 85 minutes in a game, but he can get caught out of position (although he does have the pace to get away with it most of the time) and does lack concentration too often for my liking. With Katic, I've noticed he can be excellent if we are constantly under threat because he's switched on. It's when we aren't under much pressure that his brain switches off. It happened 3 or 4 times in crucial games last season and that's why he was dropped. I like him though and he can develop that side of his game. I hope he does because offensively he's a real threat, much more so than Goldson is (despite his recent goal poaching).

  7. Sports Direct v Rangers - the truth behind the media lies One could write a book on this subject between the fat man's company and our proud and mighty Rangers. Search and Sports direct are probably in court every week in Litigation with one company or another. I would like to start by saying that anyone can do this. I just searched till I found what I was looking for, which was the court documents giving the facts and not the sensationalism that the press are whipping up on the conclusion of the case between SDIR v Rangers. I fully support Dave King and what he has done for the club and is continuing to do yes, mistakes have been made, none of us are perfect but apart from this nasty thorn in our side the club is moving forward and will continue to do so, so please take heart fellow Bears. BACKGROUND TO THE AGREEMENT The Retail Agreement arose out of the settlement of a previous dispute between the parties concerning a joint venture company, Rangers Retail Limited ("RRL") which they formed in January 2015. Pursuant to an IP Licence and Rights Agreement dated 27 January 2015, Rangers granted RRL the exclusive right to sell Rangers branded merchandise and replica football kits. It was intended at that time that the joint venture would last many years; the 2015 Agreement was only terminable on 7 years' notice. Such co-operation was not to be. In May 2016, the parties fell out, and Rangers purported to terminate the 2015 Agreement for an alleged repudiatory breach. Sports Direct then brought a derivative action on behalf of RRL against Rangers and certain of its nominated directors of RRL. That claim, along with other related litigation, was settled in June 2017. As part of that settlement, it was agreed that RRL's trading activities would cease, and a new agreement was reached between the parties concerning the manufacture, sale and distribution of Rangers branded merchandise. The Sticky bit 5.2 and 5.8 5.1 From the date falling 6 months prior to the expiry of the Initial Term, Rangers may approach, solicit, tender for or enter into negotiations with a third party in relation to that third party providing any of the Offered Rights or all or any combination of the Offered Rights. 5.2 In the event that Rangers receives an offer from such a third party (Third Party Offer) to enter into an agreement with Rangers for any of the Offered Rights or all or any combination of the Offered Rights, Rangers shall provide SDIR with written notice (Notice of Offer) of the terms of the Third Party Offer […] 5.3 The Notice of Offer shall include whether the Third Party Offer is made for any of the Offered Rights or all or any combination of the Offered Rights (identifying which Offered Rights as applicable), in each case together with any connected commercial arrangements, and full details of: 5.3.1 any payments to be made by the third party to Rangers; 5.3.2 any revenue share or royalties to be paid between Rangers and the third party; 5.3.3 the duration of the agreement between Rangers and the third party, (together, the Material Terms). […] 5.6 Within 10 Business Days of SDIR's receipt of the Notice of Offer (or further information / clarification from Rangers, if requested), SDIR shall provide written notice to Rangers as to whether it is willing to match the Material Terms of the Third Party Offer in all material respects in relation to any of the Offered Rights or in relation to all or any combination of the Offered Rights (and, in each case, any connected commercial arrangements if applicable). 5.7 If SDIR is so willing, Rangers and SDIR shall enter into a further agreement on the same terms as this Agreement, save only as to any variation required to effect the Material Terms and whether such agreement shall relate to any of the Offered Rights or all or any combination of the Offered Rights (and, in each case, any connected commercial arrangements if applicable.5.8 Should SDIR exercise its matching right in accordance with this paragraph, Rangers shall not approach, solicit, tender for, negotiate with or enter into any agreement with that third party or any other third party in respect of the Third Party Offer and/or the [sic.] any of the Offered Rights (and, in each case, any connected commercial arrangements if applicable) in respect of which the matching right is exercised. Should SDIR exercise its matching right in respect of some but not all of the Offered Rights, Rangers may enter into an agreement with that third party on the Material Terms set out in the Notice of Offer only in respect of the Offered Rights over which SDIR has not exercised its matching right only [sic.]. Should SDIR not exercise its matching right over any of the Offered Rights, Rangers may enter into an agreement with that third party on the Material Terms set out in the Notice of Offer. 5.8 Should SDIR exercise its matching right in accordance with this paragraph, Rangers shall not approach, solicit, tender for, negotiate with or enter into any agreement with that third party or any other third party in respect of the Third Party Offer and/or the [sic.] any of the Offered Rights (and, in each case, any connected commercial arrangements if applicable) in respect of which the matching right is exercised. Should SDIR exercise its matching right in respect of some but not all of the Offered Rights, Rangers may enter into an agreement with that third party on the Material Terms set out in the Notice of Offer only in respect of the Offered Rights over which SDIR has not exercised its matching right only [sic.]. Should SDIR not exercise its matching right over any of the Offered Rights, Rangers may enter into an agreement with that third party on the Material Terms set out in the Notice of Offer 5.9 Subject to paragraph 5.8, any new or amended offer or indication of interest from a third party in respect of any of the Offered Rights shall be a separate Third Party Offer and the terms of this paragraph 5 shall apply. 5.10 In the event that Rangers does not receive a Third Party Offer to enter into an agreement with Rangers for any or all of the Offered Rights within 30 days prior to expiry of the Initial Term, Rangers shall immediately notify SDIR in writing, and SDIR shall have the right to renew this Agreement on the same terms for the element(s) on which no offer has been received, save only that the Agreement will be renewed for 2 years from the expiry of the Term and: 5.10.1 the same terms would apply in respect of the operation and maintenance of the Retail Operations and the performance of the Permitted Activities; and 5.10.2 to the extent relevant, terms which are at least as favourable to SDIR as the terms that currently apply under the Puma Agreement would apply in relation to the supply by Rangers (or on its behalf) to SDIR of the Official Kit and/or Replica Kit[;] and SDIR shall notify Rangers in writing if it chooses to exercise its right to renew this Agreement within 21 days of receiving Rangers' notification that a Third Party Offer was not received for any or all of the Offered Rights. 5.11 Save as expressly permitted in this paragraph, Rangers shall not approach, solicit, tender for or enter into negotiations or any agreement with any third party in relation to any of the Offered Rights. […] 5.14 Notwithstanding any provision to the contrary this paragraph 5 shall continue in full force and effect for a period of 2 years from the expiry of the Term but that shall not prevent Rangers from the date falling 6 months prior to the expiry of that period approaching, soliciting, tendering for or entering into negotiations with any third party in relation to that third party providing any of the Offered Rights or all or any combination of the Offered Rights. 5.15 Nothing in this paragraph 5 shall prevent SDIR from approaching, tendering for, entering into negotiations with and/or making any offers to Rangers in respect of the Offered Rights, separately to the process set out in this paragraph 5 or independently of any Third Party Offer. THIS IS REALLY WHAT THE LITIGATION IS ABOUT: THE ELITE AGREEMENT On 4 June 2018, Rangers informed Sports Direct that it had received an offer from a third party, now known to be the Elite Group ("Elite"), and offered Sports Direct the opportunity to match that right. There was then a dispute between the parties concerning the information required to serve a 'Notice of Offer' within paragraph 5.2 of Schedule 3 to the Retail Agreement. Litigation ensued; injunctive relief was granted to Sports Direct by this court, preventing Rangers from accepting the Third Party Offer whilst this dispute was on foot. On 12 July 2018, Rangers served a new Notice of Offer. Sports Direct exercised its matching right in respect of this offer on 25 July 2018. Following Sports Direct's exercise of its matching right, Rangers' then-solicitors sent a letter to Sports Direct, dated 26 July 2018, stating that "our client accepts that it may not enter into any contract in respect of any of the Offered Rights with any other party." The letter continued: "For the avoidance of doubt this means that Rangers shall not now enter into an agreement with the third party that made the Third Party Offer in respect of the arrangements set out in the Third Party Offer notified to you on 12 July 2018." On 30 July 2018, before Phillips J, Sports Direct decided not to pursue the continuation of its injunction and certain issues of construction of the Retail Agreement were resolved by consent. The parties have, since that time, sought to reach an agreement in respect of the matched offer, in accordance with paragraph 5.7. Such agreement has not been forthcoming, and is the subject of further dispute; before me, each party sought to characterise the other's behaviour during these negotiations as unreasonable. On 11 September 2018, Rangers entered into a new agreement with Elite (the "Elite Agreement"). Rangers did not, before entering into that agreement, first notify Sports Direct of Elite's offer in accordance with the matching right provisions. Sports Direct only learned of the Elite Agreement on 25 September, after having seen a statement on Rangers' website, describing Elite as "our new non-exclusive partners", and providing a link to buy the new kit from a website run by Elite. That announcement on Rangers' website in fact went live at 17:30 on 21 September, just 15 minutes after a letter was sent by Rangers' solicitors to Sports Direct, which set out Rangers' view that it "retains the right to grant non-exclusive rights on same or similar terms to those which will be granted pursuant to the Further Agreement with SDIR" (in respect of the matched July 2018 offer), but made no mention of the Elite Agreement which had been signed ten days earlier. The full terms of the Elite Agreement were not before me, but I am told that it grants Elite a set of non-exclusive rights which duplicate, and do not exceed, the non-exclusive rights matched by Sports Direct in July 2018. I was told that there were 9 principal differences between it and the offer of Elite which Sports Direct had matched in July. The Elite Agreement made no mention of the exclusive rights which were included in the matched offer. The payment mechanism was different, the governing law was different, the reporting obligations were different and the payment dates were different. Significantly, the Elite Agreement contained a warranty by Rangers that it has "all necessary rights to grant [Elite] the rights in this Agreement", and granted Elite an indemnity against suit by SDIR (which is specifically named) in relation to the agreement. The next section is really again lawyer speak but basically boils down to SDIR nit picking over the contract awarded to Elite/Hummel: CONCLUSION In summary: i) The two questions posed by paragraph 2 of the Order for Directions dated 3 October should be answered in the affirmative. The prohibition imposed on Rangers by paragraph 5.8 and the obligation imposed on Rangers by paragraph 5.2 apply where Sports Direct has already exercised its matching right. ii) Accordingly, Rangers was in breach of the Retail Agreement by entering into the Elite Agreement and by failing to offer Sports Direct the opportunity to exercise its matching right in respect of Elite's offer. iii) Sports Direct is entitled to the first and second Injunctions sought in the terms set out in the Particulars of Claim. Sports Direct is entitled to a third injunction in the terms set out above. So what now you might ask? Well I guess it is all down to the lawyers and without a doubt a cash settlement to rid this tyrant from our midst. I can see and understand what Rangers have done and why they have done it. In a nutshell no revenue coming in and no merchandise for supporters. https://www.ibroxnoise.co.uk/2019/07/sports-direct-v-rangers-truth-behind.html

  8. Still a lot of speculation around Kent with some pundits even beginning to suggest that Liverpool might come in for Morelos in a player plus cash deal. The player (Kent) and cash coming our way. Generally I would have dismissed that as nonsense considering I would deem Liverpool don't really need more striking options. But apparently according to recent reports that's not necessarily true. The likes of Mané have been playing all Summer with no rest and for that reason will be several weeks behind the rest of the team when the season begins. Given that we all know how close run it was last year and that a single loss or even a draw early in the season can be the difference at the end when your main contender is the consistent Man City maybe it's not so far out there. I don't want Morelos to go but if we have to lose him which we obviously do at some point then this might be as good a deal as we could hope for. If it were to be true of course.

  11. Correct, but neither Katic nor Goldson do particularly well. Compare to Celtic Stats like this always come with caveats of course but you have to say it stands to reason that their defenders would do better in the stats considering they conceded 7 goals fewer than us in the league. I’m hoping Edmundson and Helander will push both Goldson and Katic this season.

I think they’ve slipped back a bit since their peak a few years ago but there’s no doubt they deserve their chance. Will there be any hoops in the crowd? Shame it’s not Scotland. Idessane would be great value in the commentary teams.

  14. Another great article from these guys packed with stats. It gets a bit complicated but this image sums up the findings. Key takeaway is that Arfield’s key passes leads to more shots on target than anyone else in the league (suggesting his passes are good quality and create a real shooting opportunity), and Candeias comes second for key passes that lead to goals (same as above, arguably indicative of the number of the highest quality of pass). A few other Rangers names there; Tav, Morelos, Barisic. Not going to lie I’m a wee bit smug that the stats agree with me again on Kent, he just doesn’t put chances on a plate and that’s why his assists stats were so low. The Candeias fans vindicated a bit by these numbers, we need someone to step up from the new signings. I would expect Defoe to show up too if he keeps his place. https://www.modernfitba.com/blogs/2019/7/22/which-playmakers-actually-make-their-teammates-better-the-2018-19-update

  19. There's still nothing that leads me to believe that we are in a worse position than we were previously, and in fact there's nothing to suggest that we are in anything other than a decent position in this fight. Is there anything we should be concerned about? The way this looks, we are in a better position financially so what is the problem? In the businesses I'm involved in there's are numerous court cases, none of which will have a material impact on the finances, share price or reputation. I realise we are all on a heightened state of alert given previous issues at the club, but I can't see why I should be concerned here. Does anyone have anything that suggests otherwise?

That’s is what is freaking some people, as is the spurious rumours from the obsessive gutter dwellers. I’m only saying this as it’s what is in the back of people’s minds. If we don’t win any appeals-yes we will owe money but that would be the end of it. That’s how I understand it anyway? SD and the fat man still owe us £3m too which is up in court.

  26. Just out of interest ... how long does our current contract with our retailers run? 2 years? If it comes to an end and we are going into the next round, why not offer SD then a chance to match the offer (our dislike aside for a moment). If they do, we get a similar deal to what we have with our current retailers, no extra payments to SD. If they don`t want to, they won`t get any money either as we`ve met the obligations. BTW, it is utterly beyond me that there is no business law in Britain that is able to challenge the deals done by Ashley`s place-men which were totally one-sided and not in any way profitable to anyone but Ashley and SD. This is third world stuff ...

With the EU contributing only 13% by value of Scotland's external trade and the rUK amounting to 60%, the comparison is so stark that you can only conclude the SNP has its head tucked safely up its arse as it pursues it's unique form of bigotry. If a judge can read through all the papers to make a decision then a team of lawyers should be able to do that as well. God knows they are paid high enough and are likely to come out of this as the only winners.

  29. Funny how Goldson seems to have two camps with the spectrum pretty far apart. I personally I think Goldson is a bomb-scare and Katic is the best defender between the two. I will reserve judgement on the other two until I have seen them play more games. One thing both teams have luck with is that the first game is at Ibrox. Scotland is forecast with 27 degrees so at 8.00pm the temperature should be reasonable to play football in. In Luxembourg and all over the continent temperatures are ready to hit a record 40-41 degrees on Thursday. That would have probably been a game of last man standing. I know one thing I am staying indoors until it cools off at the weekend.

  37. I agree. It normally will work if both sides are thinking rationally and commercially, but it's clear that this is much more than just about money. I didn't realise that we actually paid £3m to create a new contract. That's astonishing. Without knowing the rest of the detail, it just shows how bad the previous deal was. If we knew that SD had the right to match any offer, it seems stupid to me not to have given them that chance. We could then have continued to boycott the main store but allow the club to make money via the popups, etc. The board members involved in this aren't stupid so they must have thought this through, but in the absence of any details (which we shouldn't really see anyway), it does look like we've shot ourselves in the foot. I hope this doesn't drag on though because I've been enjoying the football and this shouldn't detract from that.

While all our supporters are taken for granted at times, the disabled Rangers supporters are treated with utter contempt and as a club we should be ashamed of how little we have done in this area. But never mind, we have clearly spent a large sum of money on this campaign which will do very little to nothing to improve access/facilities for match-going fans on matchdays, so all must be good then!

  43. He's 31, with one year left on his contract. If he was keen to leave and SG wasn't too bothered then £250k isn't that bad, all things considered.

  44. The present Administration should hold fire on such matters, until Ms Natalie McGarry graduates from Cornton Vale Academy.

  45. Looks like the "Think Tank" is telling us what most on this site already know. SNP eyes firmly focussed on Westminster while services turn to shite!!
