  1. Definite improvement in Kamara's game today, including that brilliant tackle after the mistake from Barisic. Looking forward to see who we get in the quarters tomorrow,..i'm hoping for Clyde at home.

  2. I thought we were better in the first half but as the wind worsened after half-time, we struggled badly at times - though both teams did to be fair. In the end, some good play from Aribo and Kent got us the important second goal before we put some added gloss on the scoreline from Morelos and Arfield. All in all, it was never going to be pretty today so it's job done and we move on to Killie and more astroturf.

  3. Hamilton Academical host Rangers in the 5th round of the Scottish Cup today. Kick-off is set at 12.31 GMT to raise awareness of mental health issues in sport. Steven Gerrard wants Rangers to build on an "extremely positive" second-half show against Hibernian as they try to reach the Scottish Cup quarter-finals. A late Ianis Hagi goal sealed a comeback win on Wednesday to keep Rangers seven points behind Celtic. And the Ibrox boss wants a similar approach in their last-16 cup tie at Hamilton Academical on Saturday. "I'll be looking for the same standards, people being really tuned in to get the right result," said Gerrard. "This is a club that demands that you give everything in every competition, you can't pick and choose. "We'll be going to Hamilton in decent shape, certainly on the back of the second-half performance against Hibs, which was extremely positive and very close to where we've been for most of the season. Hopefully we can take off from there." Having fallen behind, Rangers drew level with Hibs in first-half stoppage time and went on to dominate the rest of the match, pinning the visitors back for long stretches. "It was a really strong 45 minutes," said Gerrard. "Collectively, everyone was at it. Both in and out of possession, the intensity levels were exactly where I want them. "We had 15 corners and I think it was the second most crosses we've put in in a game. We could have scored another two or three goals, but for their keeper and players not taking chances at the time." Midfielder Ryan Jack remains sidelined but on-loan Florian Kamberi is available after sitting out against parent club Hibs, with Gerrard saying there "won't be wholesale changes" for the cup tie. Rangers have won on their last nine visits to Accies but Gerrard remains wary of a side who drew at St Mirren on Wednesday after staying level with Celtic for 77 minutes despite a first-half red card for Jamie Hamilton last weekend. "Every environment is different," he said. "They are very effective on their pitch. They've got a good coach and they have players who can hurt you if you don't defend properly. "Every time we've gone there, they've tried to stay in the game for as long as they can. We've had to finish them off late on." https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51412598

  4. The arrogance of petty power comes in many forms and Scotland is awash with it. At some point, that reality has to be confronted and corrected. Will this week be a turning-point? Every government and minister needs the constraints imposed by accountability. Otherwise, the arrogance – the sense of being able to get away with anything – just grows. That has been the trend over the past decade and is now rampant. To be fair, such a presumption of untouchability is understandable. Holyrood barely registers in terms of holding to account. Beyond it, the tentacles of government have been used ruthlessly to stifle dissent, where any dependency exists on Nationalist largesse. Critically, there is now a substantial minority in Scotland who do not care how many Health Boards are in crisis, how filthy our streets are, how many hundreds of millions are squandered on unbuilt ferries, what proportion of our children can read and write… These are the politics of the past. All their belief is vested in a mirage of the future and the flags which represent it. If that minority is substantial enough to produce a permanent hold on power, then why not be arrogant? Why not believe in one’s own invincibility? Eventually, in theory at least, a rebound follows as this conceit fosters complacency and people wake up to the fact they have been taken for a very big ride. Scales fall from eyes and political mortality reasserts itself. The veneer of competence slips. The fear factor begins to fade and, once the emperor (or empress) is seen to be scantily clad, those who have deemed it prudent to stay silent or join in the sycophancy begin to recover their voices. Nobody, however, should rely on scandal alone to deliver these outcomes, even if it creates an environment in which doubts are raised and arrogance recognised. It was not sleaze which defeated John Major in the 1990s but the impression, which it fed into, of a tired, talentless administration that had little to offer. That is where Scotland is now. I have no interest whatsoever in Derek Mackay’s personal life. There are no winners, political or otherwise, in personal disasters of this nature. Without doubt though there are losers, through collateral damage to family, friends, people who placed trust and feel betrayed. Such anguish transcends politics. As it happens, Mr Mackay should have been under pressure to resign this week for entirely different reasons – his role in the Ferguson ferry scandal. Reasons which should matter. Reasons which reflect the arrogance of untouchability when it came to public money and political opportunism. But do these matter enough in the court of Scottish public opinion? That is the turning-point which is awaited. I do not want to see any politician destroyed or self-destroyed on the altar of their own frailties. But I do want to see them held to account for their actions as politicians. # In Holyrood’s early days, Henry MacLeish was forced to resign as First Minister of Scotland over an expenses imbroglio involving the princely sum of £36,000. Nobody seriously doubted that it was, as he asserted, “a muddle not a fiddle”. But that did not silence his tormentors, and none was more acerbic in pursuit of the wounded than Nicola Sturgeon. This week, we learned – unless they are prepared to call Jim McColl a liar – that Sturgeon apparently pre-empted negotiations so she could announce a £97 million contract for the political purpose of pre-empting “good news” from the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the hated Westminster government. The £97 million has since turned into £230 million and counting – every penny of it public money. Politicians cannot abuse a tender process for political convenience. But what politician would act in such a cavalier way? Only a politician who is consumed with her own arrogance of untouchability. That is the scandal Scotland needs to address. https://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/brian-wilson-here-s-the-real-reason-derek-mackay-should-have-resigned-this-week-1-5087453

  7. Good result. Not a great performance. Great finish from Arfield. In an away cup tie against top flight opponents, a win is all that matters.

  11. We can't play 4-2-3-1 when Jack isn't in the team. He reads the game well and covers the wings so well. Kamara and Arfield are so out of position defensively and then just react to the attack rather than anticipating it. Equally, Edmundson and Goldson need to communicate better. On the plus side, Hagi once again looks like he's going to be a new absolute steal. He needs Morelos and/or Kent to hit some form because at the moment he has no one on his wavelength.

The Bundesliga 2 club have successfully applied to allow fans to set off 10 smoke devices before their home match with Karlsruher on Saturday.". Great to see HSV lead the way on this. The fans at Bundesliga matches show up most of Europe when it comes to atmosphere, so it's no surprise this is happening there.

  22. I'm fully accepting that they have members and representives that have abused their power and let down the people they are paid to represent. They deserve all that's coming their way in my book. The actions of these individuals are in the public domain (Or in court) so I don't see what I can add apart from stating the obvious? My main gripe with that post lies with quoting stuff (in that case the bit about education) that clearly is a complete bah of sh*te. Somewhat dilutes any point the post was trying to make in the first place IMO ?

  26. Our midfield is so important to the way we play. Kamara and Arfield are not a good partnership and I feel it's affecting the whole balance here. Aribo needs to know when to come back to build up play and he's not at all. Hagi and Kent are not in this because Aribo doesn't have enough lateral movement to make the space for them. Aribo is making good forward runs though but he needs an earlier cross to him. The team just looks so static. Look at the gap between Arfield and Kamara, or between them and Aribo. That's not how to play this setup. Edit: I just posted this and a minute later an early cross to Aribo gets the goal. ??. Thankfully Gerrard has put Davis on because it's clear that the midfield is broken here.

  37. I'd say Goldson is our best defender, but I agree, we miss Helander; that's the strongest partnership, for me. Edmundson should be first back-up too.

  38. I remember Alex Ferguson selling Jaap Stam because he had the fewest tackles and the fewest headers won of any defender in the league. The stats team saw it as a clear sign that he was deteriorating so they cashed in on him. It was only later as the data analysis team evolved (and after he had left the club) that they realised that his marking and positioning was excellent and therefore did not need to tackle or head the ball as often. This is exactly the same for me with Helander. Helander is our best defender and we miss him. He man marks better than any of the others and knows when to get tight or when to drop off. It's therefore dangerous to look at individual stats as a means of assessing a player.

  40. Pacific Quay Priorities. As stated a few posts past, yesterday was the day for BBC Scotland's weekly Media Review. An allocated 40 minutes is a short time to cover a week's events. It is hosted by John Beattie(former rugby internationalist), co-presenter Anne Marie Watson lobs the odd question to the main protagonists, Stuart Cosgrove and Eammon O'Neill. Three topics were up for discussion(review) yesterday lunchtime. The resignation of Scottish Finance Minister for sending 270 text messages to a 15/16 year old schoolboy was first, selection of journalists attending Prime Ministerial Briefings was second, and third was Michael Stewart's rant reference James Traynor. Derek MacKay's resignation was allocated 7 minutes discussion, DrStu' wants a timeline on the story. The News, travel, weather, and sports news intervened for nine minutes, PM briefings lasted ten minutes, and Michael Stewart's vanity was awarded a scripted 14 minutes. H-u-n bashing was worth double the amount of time a Scot's Minister's resignation amid creepy circumstances. We should remember this, it is an indicator of PQ priorities. DrStu' attended Hull UNiversity, his degree was in Drama. In his 68th year, he proved he still has the skills to script and choreograph a fifteen minute four-hander. John Beattie introduced the topic and spent a couple of minutes setting the scene. Already, both DrStu' and O'Neill were guffawing. There existed a real crackling of excited anticipation, Anne Marie yelped too, and Beattie inquired if he was accurately setting the scene? DrStu' assured him, he was doing very well. More laughing interfered before DrStu' embarked on a several minute soliloquy; Michael Stewart is fealess, both Stewart and Thompson are the best commentators on Scottish football ever, far better than the likes of MacPherson and Montford, and Stewart was highlighting the 'dark hand' claiming ra Sellik are racist. He legitimised these assertions by stating, "both Michael and Steven have opinions that matter because both have played the game at a substantial level"? More guffawing ensued and I am thinking, Michael Stewart's 15 year career barely includes 150 first team appearances, is that substantial? Beattie mockingly scolds DrStu' for his long rant and apologises to O'Neill for not having the time to extrapolate. No problem, Eammon is not interested in football and begins with, "I've never heard of nor met James Traynor and wouldn't know him if I bumped into him". It didn't stop him delivering his scripted lines about Rangers being part of the story. Whataboutery was raised by DrStu', informed us the word emanated from the Slugger O'Toole website. He explained you are not allowed to morally condemn a lorry bomb by reminding those participating of the time the UDA planted a bomb. Do you see what DrStu' did there? References a general principle, but specifically highlights the UDA. Jim Traynor is a former colleague of three of the four talking and O'Neill's opening statement sees DrStu' anxious to supply the necessary information. Traynor operates Level Five, Anne Marie wants to knoe more? "It's a PR firm operating out of Airdrie" shouts DrStu'. More laughing and then DrStu' introduces a bit of whataboutery, "Apparently he told us all in his Daily Record column that Rangers had died". A big theatrical laugh followed, then DrStu' introduced, the concept of, 'there's a squirrel'. ie Traynor had deliberately ran interference on a SKY interview conducted by a Formula 1 journo. Again, he explained the meaning of there's a squirrel but did not tell us the derivation. We await Phil McFournames for that one. I hope all four receive their much deserved Equity Cards, a bravo performance? A wee aside to Dr Eammon O'Neill. Having listened to you for several years, I know you place great emphasis on the principles of accuracy and objectivity in Journalism. Your go to area of expertise is the American political system, particularly the post-war era; when referencing a contravention of those dearly held principles. Many years ago, I was required to attend a lecture on 'the Expansion of the Vietnam War'. One Knight of Camelot is held responsible, he was an ever present for seven/eight years, Robert McNamara. Many recognised McNamara's determination to sacrifice a country's principles to ensure a personal victory. McNamara searched for and found an Air Force General that would promote Carpet Bombing of North Vietnam. Paul Harkins strong suit went before him, "he willed himself to believe what he wished to believe and reject what he wished to reject". This became a tenet of what became known as, 'the McNamara Monarchy'. Setting a squirrel running would conclude with McNamara telling lies to the President to achieve a preferred prejudice. The Cosgrove Monarchy has survived for 25 years at PQ. Your participation in yesterday's scripted four-hander(remember, you have never met and would not know James Traynor) compromised your dearly held journalistic principles. Playing the straight man for DrStu' to deliver lines of mis and disinformation will be remembered too. You have sold yourself, paid the asking price to take your place in the court of the Cosgrove Monarchy. You can ask Jum Spence if it's worth it? Oh, I loved your contribution to Cosgrove's 25 year celebration of broadcasting on BBC Scotland, "Stuart is an intellectual colossus". You were easy to identify, please continue to practice your off stage guffawing.

  41. Pretty sure it will be a full team against Chelsea or at least a good few of the first team in there. Typical the anti Liverpool fans/media/pundits having a real go at Klopp and Liverpool for fielding a young team and standing his ground. Would love the same team to go out again and win in the next round but can't see it. On a side note, I read that SG had made two enquiries about Jones duing the transfer window but was knocked back.

  42. A bit skeptical of that stat. Helander is our tallest defender and has always looked very comfortable in the air, more so than Katic for defensive aerial duels at least. It looks like this stat is about quantity only instead of % of aerial duels won.
