  1. The current Scottish football Compliance Officer, Claire Whyte has indicated she wants to avail herself of a new, exciting opportunity in the New Year. The SFA have her resignation, however Claire has assured Ian Maxwell she will remain in post until her successor is appointed. When appointed, Claire was wife of then Head Teacher at St Cadoc's Primary School. St Cadoc's football club has largely filled the vacuum left by the demise of Celtic Boys' Club. Claire and her husband had season tickets at Parkhead for many seasons. Further, she was employed as a Solicitor at Sellik's Lawyers, Harper McLeod. Both of Claire's predecessors as Compliance Officer had similar backgrounds. Tony McGlennan was also a former Sellik season ticket holder and as recently as March of this year, went public in his desire to see his beloved Sellik crowned champions in a Covid suspended season. Tony believed there were no obstacles to the award of the league flag, based on sporting merit. Tony succeeded Vincent Lunny, another former Sellik season ticket holder. Vincent is on record as saying his appointment to the designation, "was down to pure luck". So, who will be the next beneficiary of Peter's pure luck? Below is the approved short list : 1. Jum Spence. 2. Gerry Adams. 3. Angela Haggerty. 4. Cardinal O'Brien.

  2. Michael Stewart must be in contention, given he prompts most of the cases for consideration (via Sportscene) anyway.

  3. Will there be a replacement CO? The SFA were having redundancies were they not? This could be one of them. Not exactly an essential role is it if all things are considered?

  4. That's the one I found ... We went to Wolverhampton We went to Wolverhampton, not so very long ago And to the local Englishmen, we did put on a show. We marched along 10,000 strong, you'll know us by our noise, For we're the lads, the lads who follow Rangers. So on Rangers on, victory is nigh. From the terraces you will hear the cry. ’Come away the Rangers!’, you'll know us by our noise, For we're the lads, the lads who follow Rangers.

  5. ... fair enough. You will note the absence of all the (tons of) Loyalist and "banter" songs (Nakamura ate my dog; Jorge Cadette, he's got hair like spagetti et al), as well as those with no "direct" connection to Rangers, e.g. Penny Arcade, Simply the Best and the like. ? And methinks it depends of the intent of the book, rather than how many songs are in there. The above of mine was collected with purely football related songs in mind.

  6. For some reason I feel slightly uneasy about this. Perhaps it's because football songs and chants belong in the stands and pubs, not in a book. They're fluid and often irreverent, open to spontaneous change. They seldom stand still and several versions can exist. More than anything else, they're aural rather than visual. Once you put them in a book you cast them in someone's idea of what they should be and it's almost never what you'll hear where fans gather.

  11. From today's Times. Questions spring to mind: What does it matter if he is "A Saint", or not? If it does, then why? (Feeding the credulolusness of the trusting, I shouldn't wonder.) Did Theodore McCarrick receive instruction on pedantry and hair splitting from William ("I did not have sex with that woman") Jefferson Clinton? Theodore McCarrick abuse scandal tarnishes John Paul II’s sainthood Philip Willan, Rome Monday November 16 2020, 12.01am, The Times https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/world/theodore-mccarrick-abuse-scandal-tarnishes-john-paul-iis-sainthood-tw3sgrkwv John Paul II made Theodore McCarrick Archbishop of Washington knowing that he had been accused of abusing minors John Paul II turned a blind eye to reports of a cardinal’s serial sex abuse of seminarians, raising doubts about the wisdom of the late pope’s rapid canonisation, a Vatican report has found. An inquiry was held into Theodore McCarrick, 90, a cardinal who was defrocked by the present Pope last year amid claims that he sexually abused an altar boy in the 1970s. A 449-page report released last week said that John Paul II made McCarrick Archbishop of Washington in 2000 knowing that he had been accused of abusing minors, having sex with a priest and sharing his bed with young seminarians. He was persuaded that the reports were false when McCarrick swore that he was a virgin. “McCarrick’s direct relationship with John Paul II also likely had an impact on the pope’s decision-making,” the report said. Francis declared John Paul a saint in 2014, responding to the popular clamour for recognition of his holiness that began after his death in 2005. Benedict, who resigned in 2013, had waived a five-year waiting period that normally applies after the death of a candidate for sainthood. Kathleen Cummings, the head of a centre for the study of US Catholicism at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana said that the Vatican report contained “damning evidence” on John Paul’s role. The canonisation process might not have been started if the five-year rule had been respected, she said. The National Catholic Reporter (NCR), a progressive American publication, has suggested that US bishops should consider reining in public celebration of the Polish saint. “This man, proclaimed a Catholic saint by Pope Francis in 2014, wilfully put at risk children and young adults in the Archdiocese of Washington, DC, and across the world,” the NCR wrote in an editorial. “In doing so, he also undermined the global church’s witness, shattered its credibility as an institution and set a deplorable example for bishops in ignoring the accounts of abuse victims. “As the Vatican’s devastating report shows clearly, the late pope’s decision to appoint McCarrick as Washington’s archbishop in 2000 came despite severe warnings from his highest-level advisors on both sides of the Atlantic.” Cardinal John O’Connor, Archbishop of New York until his death in 2000, warned in a letter to the Vatican that McCarrick was the subject of anonymous allegations and was known to invite seminarians to sleep in his bed. “I regret that I would have to recommend very strongly against such promotion,” he wrote. The NCR said: “This wasn’t a simple blinking red light. It was an all-alerts, final-act bulletin from one of the global church’s most senior figures.” Despite the warning, John Paul promoted McCarrick, instructing the Vatican’s secretary of state to tell the US bishops’ congregation to add McCarrick to the list of priests being considered. The NCR said John Paul was an admirable man in many ways but it insisted that he was wilfully blind to the abuse of young people. It said: “For abuse victims, their advocates and many others, John Paul’s memory is no longer a blessing. It should not be celebrated.” John Paul’s defenders acknowledge the error of judgment but say that he might have been easy to deceive because in Cold War Poland, false accusations of sexual abuse were regularly levelled at church leaders. George Weigel, the former pope’s biographer, told The New York Times: “McCarrick was a pathological liar. And pathological liars fool people, including saints.”

  17. OK I'm fascinated to see what I must have missed. Tell me when we ever made it out of the group stages. Did I imaging Peru and Iran. Or Costa Rica and Morocco? Eight WC finals and failed at the first hurdle each time. The odd creditable match changes nothing - in a results business we long since passed the stage where qualification for a tournament should be celebrated as an achievement. Wales, and Northern Ireland have achieved what we still haven't been able to. When we do, that will be the time to dance in the streets.
