  1. No Aribo/Hagi for a start the first flatters to deceive and the latter unsuited to Scottish game.

  2. 55 years ago tonight the First Prince of Denmark banged one in to keep the spalpeens’ hands off the Scottish Cup. Residual traces of that evening’s delirium can still be found in my brain.

  3. Yes great memories so much so that the only dog I ever owned, was then, and named Kai in tribute to the great man. Unfortunately my dog got paralysis of the his back legs and had to be put to sleep so have happy memories of the goal and sad ones of my dog's ending.

  6. I'd give Wright a start for hagi. Celtic would struggle to cope with kent and aribo and Wright at the same time. He looks up for every game to so far. Exactly the attitude we've been lacking of late. I'd also play itten at some part. Roofe is losing favour with every game I see him.

  7. If ever there was an Old Firm match to make your debut in it's this one. There's nothing but pride at stake, it's the perfect match for Simpson to start if Helander is out. Everything we do now should be about getting ready for next season. That said unless there are injuries I expect a midfield of Davis, Kamara and Arfield and an attack of Morelos, Kent and Aribo. Maybe we'll play Roofe instead of Morelos and maybe we'll give McLoughlin a game for the experience. We've options up front but defence and midfield are down to their bones and we don't have many alternatives. Can't see King getting a game unless we've more injuries than we know of. Could see him make a substitute appearance before the end of the season though.

  8. Add to that the defence will need to be more at it than last time as they will not be as wasteful in front of goal this time around. If Helander is out i'd worry if we have to start with Simpson.

  9. For me the key to this game is Kamara. Without Jack and Zungu, we can't afford Kamara to be as passive as he's been recently. If Kamara is at it then we probably win, otherwise we are going to struggle.

  11. I know that this season was all about 55, and that was delivered. Looking at the table, it was delivered with some style too, which was indeed somewhat surprising, compared to how the two previous seasons ended (Covid-19 aside). Usually a combination of various factors, and I am not one of those who`s world solely rotates around Rangers FC, hence, IMHO, we e.g. also have to accept that the Scum failed to live up to their own standards and collapsed like we did these last two seasons. I notice that people have said that we are "just 3 seasons into this", but again, IMHO, we could and should have done better before. The opposition aside from the Scum has not been any better or worse back then, and truth be told, I for one think that our success this season has NOT come from any change in tactics, but the fact that A) some of our resident players finally played up to their own abilities and (sic!) consistently so (e.g. Goldson, Tavernier), while B) those players we brought in delivered the goods where we failed before. We stopped relying on Morelos to pop up with something special, in fact, Alfredo has matured into a more cultured striker, setting up others and drawing defenders away from the goal to create space for others to exploit. As I have pointed out before, I very much doubt that the tactic we`ve used is appropriate for most of the Scottish games, where 8 out of 11 teams sit deep, close the spaces, and rely on counter-attacks and corners, free-kicks and the like to grab a goal or two. Obviously, I have to accept that people say: look at the results this season, the goals we have conceeded, and scored. Phenomenal! Yes, but when you cast your mind back (and not only to this season), you note that we have had loads of possession (mostly amongst our defenders and midfielders), looked "comfortable" (termed "sluggish" in 18/19 and 19/20) in the build up and quite a few games we won by but one or two goals (35 league games, 18 by one or two goals / 6 draws). Unbeaten, yes. But more often than not also not exactly pleasing to the eye. Then again, against brick-wall teams and football-destroyers, what can you do?! That is the Euro 1.000 question, is it not? IMHO, that 4-2-3-1 we have played for ages now, or 4-3-3, as some may see it, has served us perfectly well in Europe and against teams in Scotland that at least attempt to play an open game of football. So much so, that our success in European games has probably left us all speechless. But at one stage I simply expect that we recognize that it ain`t a system that works that well in the backyard of Scotland`s Premiership. Not least when those we expect to support the main (and usually well covered) striker with goals and assists simply fail to deliver in a way that a couple of wingers and a 2nd striker would probably do. Something we hardly ever even tried, to at least see how it works. And I for one couldn´t care whether that`s not modern day football, as Scotland is probably one of the worst countries in that respect. Well, apart from adapting Iberian antics and hysterics at falling to the ground and claiming a foul. Hence, I am quite disappointed that after getting Itten, Roofe, Defoe et al, plus having the option to rotate e.g. Jones and Stewart for a winger slot when things don`t go well or against teams that need to be opened up, we still stuck to the quick and short range passing through the tightest defenses time and time again, hoping that Barisic and Tavernier would supply the odd cross from the wing. Something that IMHO has cost us these last couple of seasons. On top of that the utter reluctance to change systems or even personal that ain`t clicking on the day, usually only changing like for like. So, for many this may be lamenting on a high level, given where we are. We still have to see what sort of people we will be able to bring in, people who may be more capable of providing us joy with the system we play now. Much of our pre-season needs to be geared to those two CL play off games, as those two will be in many ways, the final jewel in the crown of 55, one that sets us on a safe financial footing again.

  12. It did last January then recovered a bit. Incredibly volatile. Similar to the tulip bubble of the 18th century. It's what called fictitious capital; nothing concrete backing it. In fact iif it was concrete it might have some future.

  15. Rangers were rebuilding Ibrox during the late 70s and early 80s, had Rangers been able to invest that money on players it might have been a very different time for us. Also home gate receipts were split 50/50 with the away side, an enormous benefit for every other side in the league, there was very little TV money and sponsorship and no one had thought of corporate hospitality yet. So while Rangers and Celtic were still the richest clubs the gap between us and everyone else was much smaller than now. Also the gap between salaries in Scotland and England was much smaller, the top sides in England were paying more but nothing like the difference we see now. Footballers contract's were very different too, there was no Bosman rule then, the club decided if you stayed or left, the player had far less say in it. This allowed clubs to keep good players for longer or cash in on them when they wanted. Lastly Aberdeen and Dundee Utd were managed by geniuses, something we can all hope never happens again!

  17. In the previous game against St.Johnstone, Gerrard rested about half his team with a view to the important fixture being the cup quarter-final. In all his interviews he stressed that the focus was on winning the quarter-final against St.Johnstone. So, for him the game was not a dead rubber but a real opportunity to progress and perhaps win the Scottish Cup. A number of players let Gerrard down and it should be apparent to him that a few changes need to be made. It has been evident from the past few games that Davies is our playmaker and anchor in midfield and without him I am not sure who is capable of doing a similar role. In hindsight, playing the game against St.Johnstone a few days before was actually more beneficial for them than to us because achieving a draw gave them confidence and they gained practice sitting in, pressing our back line and going for the quick break.

  18. Last night was just one of those games that we’ve all seen before. We’re not on top form, playing against a physical team who seem to get away with constant fouls and you can guess the rest. As for their goal, Roofe lost the ball down near their corner - could/should have been a free kick, but I thought he would just hold on to the ball and see it out - we were brilliant at doing that earlier in the season. Then, htf did we concede from that corner? The marking was amateur hour and while McGregor is one of our greatest ever keepers, he’s not great at commanding his area (or distribution) so that’s just one weakness that I guess we’re not going to change now. You’d still hope for something though, even if its a fist or a flap... anything tbh. I wonder how many opposition goalkeepers can say they’ve scored at Ibrox from open play? I’ll be honest, since we won the title, the combination of dead rubbers and international breaks have kind of made it feel like the season has been over for a while. Might just be me though. I know we’re going for the double and an undefeated league season, but once 55 was done, everything else seems like an anticlimax.
