  1. It's not a choice between vaccine passports and another lockdown. The government has the option to do neither. This will affect every single person that attends a sporting event with over 10,000 present. So given the nature of this forum then I suspect it will affect many of us. I'm opposed to it because I don't believe that I should have to share my private medical information with a third party without good cause. I also don't believe that anybody should be obliged to take the vaccine if they don't want to take it. As far as I can tell the vaccine does not prevent you from catching the virus. Neither does it prevent you from spreading it. I does significantly reduce the likelihood of serious illness and death. If that's all true then the only person endangered would be the person who remains unvaccinated. So why not let the individual take this risk? I'm happy to be corrected about the impact of the vaccine on transmission. What is the stated impact of vaccine passports? How many lives does the government estimate that this measure will save? Is the N.H.S. in danger of being overwhelmed by the remaining 9-16% of the population? All questions that the government should have to answer before legislating for this. Any answer to these questions will reliably turn out to have been exaggerated. Would the vaccine passport survive an equalities impact assessment? Reportedly black and minority ethnic groups are significantly less likely to be vaccinated. People throughout public institutions are asked to assess decisions for a balanced impact across protected characteristics. Is that happening here? You might worry that the government applies certain practices only when it suits. As an aside this is the thin end of the wedge. Scotland suffers from an electorate with an inability to critique any government decisions. It won't end well.

  2. Say what you like about Kent, but the lad never stops looking for the ball and keeps plugging away. His work-rate is incredible right across games and he covers every blade of grass. Yes, he's not at his dangerous best right now (which player is?) but the threat he carries is obvious and it was him that got us back into the game.

  3. Real, PSG, Barca and Juve all outbid by Brentford for Ajer and Palace for Edouard. Stunning. And why have City and Chelsea allowed their closest title rivals to strengthen?

  5. If I want to go about my life as normal. Because I happen to attend large sporting events I can't. I either have to sacrifice my lifestyle or my privacy. I don't think that I should have to without good cause. I'm yet to see evidence that there is a good cause. Ask yourself what proportion of ~400k will catch covid. Ask yourself what proportion of that number already have antibodies due to prior infection. Ask yourself how many will catch covid concurrently. Ask yourself how many will catch covid due to attending a large sporting event. Ask yourself how many of those will have little or no risk of requiring intensive care let alone death. Answers to each of those questions will diminish the number further until we reach the point that the violation of privacy is obviously farcical. Although it is earth shattering to learn that I can vote I suspect that more is required. None of the parties are opposed to the vaccine passport as a matter of principle. The opposition parties have a duty to scrutinise the legislation and oppose it. Real protection from such legislation will not come unless the electorate wakes up. Political parties will neither uphold privacy nor leave us alone unless the electorate holds them to account. That means critique of every stupid, and unjustified, rule that is introduced. As it is the numerous feeble minded, or ignorant, souls will shrug and ask what's the problem?

  6. Aye, I don’t understand that. Thought everything positive we did was through Kent. Indeed, Kent was my MOTM.

  8. What a vital win that could turn out to be come the end of the season but, even now, you cannot underestimate the importance of a hard won three points in terms of belief. Yes we didn't play well enough but the attitude to going behind was very good and no-one can deny we didn't deserve to win. Let's hope the players take confidence from that ahead of an extremely tough European tie on Thursday.

  9. I've been listening to an audio book called The Afghanistan papers. I recommend it and might pick up a physical copy later. It reports on what really happened over there and reveals all of the stupid ways that a government will waste money. It turns out that after chasing Al Qaeda out nobody had any idea what to do. The most hilarious/sad part must be the efforts to curtail the opium trade. Britain was offering Afghan farmers $700 per acre to destroy opium crops. Many farmers went out and planted poppies immediately. Some even harvested the opium resin prior before destroying the crops for a double payday. Some efforts were made to encourage farmers to grow other crops instead. Offering people something like $100 dollars a month to dig irrigation ditches. Sadly teachers were only getting 60% of that so many quit teaching to go and dig ditches. For some reason the other crops were not profitable so were abandoned. Don't worry though as all those ditches would end up being used to irrigate opium crops anyway. Many of the empty schools would be repurposed by Taliban. During all of this the Afghans would ask why they couldn't grow poppies if the U.S.A. and Europe had such high demand for opium resin. It might have been an idea to discourage the demand over here but the West is increasingly busy facilitating it. I think the U.S.A. spent about 2 trillion dollars over there. This book is a great reminder of how useless government spending can be.

  10. This made me laugh. Michel Barnier wants to ‘take back control’ from Brussels. That’s right, the man best known to us Brits as the EU’s hardline Brexit negotiator – who tried to make it as painful as possible for Britain to leave the EU – is now complaining about the EU smothering national sovereignty. The reason for this is that Barnier has thrown his hat into the ring for the French presidency. And given that a lot of French people really don’t like the EU he has decided to make some loud Eurosceptic noises on the campaign trail. This week, Barnier slammed the European courts. ‘We must regain our legal sovereignty so that we are no longer subject to the rulings of the European Court of Justice’, he told a rally organised by Les Républicains, the party he hopes to represent. A few months ago, he raised more than a few eyebrows when he called for France to tighten its borders. He called for a rethink of the EU’s passport-free Schengen area. He even proposed a temporary moratorium on all non-EU immigration – a proposal far more isolationist than any prominent right-wing Brexiteer has ever come out with. His standing has got to be a ploy to leech a few votes away from the real euro sceptic parties. Surely he cannot be that much of a hypocrital remainer, oh the irony.
