A couple of goals in a bounce game to hopefully boost his confidence: Rangers 2-0 Airdrie Pictures included in link. Several other first team players getting a run out too.
  2. By Emma Dodds Walter Smith has admitted he thought the goal would never come for Rangers tonight, but has praised his players for fighting until the end against Red Star at Ibrox. Novo scores against Red Star The Light Blues now take a slender one-goal lead to Belgrade in a fortnight's time and although this tie is by no means finished, they are in poll position to progress. It was a hard-fought victory by Gers and they had to contend with some physical play from the visitors, with seven of their players being booked, but Novo took his goal well much to Smith's delight. He said: "The tie is not over we know that, but it was a good feeling to see the ball hit the back of the net. "We're obviously pleased with the result, it was a tight game and not many chances for either side. But we kept going and secured what was eventually a good result. "We are proving very hard to score against and while it might not be the most pleasing on the eye just now, it's effective. "It's always hard to strike a balance between defending and attacking because the away goal is so valuable, so to come away with a win and a clean sheet is very pleasing. "We know there are certain aspects of our game we need to improve on, but tonight we did a decent job and will look forward to the return leg. "It's been a busy period for us thus far, but the players are coping well and hopefully that can continue. The referee warns a Red Star player "Nacho has a great spirit and we know what he can offer to the team. He always gives his all and once again tonight he scored a crucial goal. "He took it well and the players deserve credit for fighting until the final whistle because that goal came late." Rangers now have two SPL matches, against Falkirk and Kilmarnock, before going to Belgrade for the match on August 28 and Smith is hopeful his side can do enough to progress into the group stage. He added: "We have managed to win all the games we've played so far and are proving hard to break down. "Our players have worked extremely hard and that is a good foundation for us. I'm sure we'll see an improvement in time, once everyone gets to know each other. "For now we're in a winning position and hopefully we can hold on to that in Belgrade."
  3. Official match review Only thing we can take from that is the team is essentially our youths. alot of last year's double winning u19s in there. Not familiar with Donal, Gallacher or Michetschlager though.

I wonder when we are going to see him play for Rangers,he's one player i was looking forward to see playing, plenty time i suppose and he has been through a bit of a hard time recently with a couple of deaths in his family, but i hope to see him in the team soon. Buffel is also getting back to fitness, although i'm not a big fan of his,if he shows the right attitude and desire he could still offer the team a lot. Once Stevie Smith gets back fit and it just shows we have a really strong squad now given the start to the season and these players reaching thier full potential and fitness then things are looking good for us. Get this CL qualification secured and maybe we are just going to get back to winning trophies again, and more importantly the SPL title back home.
  5. Red Star Belgrade coach Milorad Kosanovic believes snuffing out the threat of Barry Ferguson is the key to success over Rangers. The Serbian champions take on the Glasgow giants in the first leg of their final Champions League qualifier at Ibrox on Tuesday night with high hopes of progressing to the lucrative group stages. Kosanovic - who replaced sacked boss Bosko Djurovski last week - has identified several danger men within the Rangers' ranks. But he admits skipper Ferguson poses the biggest threat to his team's chances. He said: "We have to take care of their two forwards Daniel Cousin and Jean-Claude Darcheville as well as DaMarcus Beasley. "But especially we have to take care of Barry Ferguson. "If we stop him then we would expect it to help our chances - but you never know." Rangers' boss Walter Smith has admitted the change of management at Red Star means he is venturing into the unknown tomorrow night. But Kosanovic insists he knows exactly what to expect from their hosts. "The usual," he said. "They are going to play as they play every week, they won't change that. "They have one style of play and everything is in order so they have no reason to change - they cannot change just for one game. "They can maybe change some details but not their way of playing. "It's not a boring style, it's just the way Glasgow Rangers play. They play very simple, fast, strong and beautiful. "Yes it will be physical but that is football today. If you cannot play like this, don't play." Kosanovic has been in charge for just one game, their goalless league opener at the weekend and he added: "I don't have a first 11 like Rangers have, we are still trying to find the way that is best for us. "Yes this game has come a little bit too early for me." here's hoping this game has come too soon for them i think we will need a couple of goals to go over there with just to make sure but even so I'm confident that we can beat this mob convincingly i hope
  6. http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/16047/Qu-Bo-says-no-to-Rangers- RANGERS have been foiled in a bid to land Chinese World Cup star Qu Bo. Express Sport can reveal that Walter Smith had hoped to bring the international striker over on trial but that move has been blocked by his club, Qingdao. The Chinese Super League club had initially given their 27-year-old striker permission to travel to Scotland but that agreement has now fallen through due to Rangers and Qingdao's new season commitments. Rangers wrote personally to issue the invitation to Qu Bo and hoped to get him over after China's Asian Cup campaign but that has now collapsed. His club are keen to cash-in on their £1 million-rated star but the timing meant that the Ibrox trial was going to run too close to the Chinese signing deadline and Qingdao don't think they had enough time to find a suitable replacement. Qu Bo has been told that he can come over on trial in November but now the frontman, who can also play wide on the right, faces an anxious wait to see if Walter Smith will go back in for him. The Chinese star is seen as his country's top frontman and played in all three World Cup games back in 2002 against Brazil, Turkey and Costa Rica. Not long after that he had a successful trial at Tottenham where he was offered a contract but it collapsed because of work permit problems. Former Rangers boss Graeme Souness at Blackburn was also keen on him but he also failed to get a work permit but since then Qu Bo has played in enough domestic and international games to meet the strict British criteria. If Rangers do keep the door open for him then he could become the third Chinese professional to play in the SPL after Du Wei's infamous stop-off at Celtic and Fan Zhiyi also has a brief spell at Dundee. Rangers, though, are aware there could be a massive commercial spin-off if they do decide to take a chance on Qu Bo.
  7. Not to piss on Gribz parade, i'm sure he'll produce his usual pre-match analysis (good reads), but what team and formation does everyone fancy for St Mirren. 4-4-2 for me. 4-5-1 worked well for an away game in Europe but back to Ibrox and an SPL game we should be winning comfortably, no need for two holding midfielders against a team who will sit in and defend. GK - No reason to drop Alan McGregor, comfortably retaining his No. 1 status atm. LB - Papac was some fans' motm midweek, second best player on the park for me. Unfortunately no challenge for his place from Smith atm. CB's - Weir and Cuellar, no justification needed. RB - Broadfoot was an able deputy midweek. A solid performance. However not a natural RB and did not provide the attacking threat Hutton does, so Hutton for me. LM - Beasley should be given a chance again I think. Scored midweek despite an indifferent performance. With his pace and a few games under his belt he should have the confidence to beat his man which will prove useful in unlocking a packed defence. CM - Fergie is performing quite well atm. Motm versus Caley and a decent outing midweek if less spectacular. Needs to dictate paly more in this one and I think St Mirren will allow him to do so. CM - Thomson will sit deeper and do the dirty work to allow Fergie to get forward and hurt the opposition. Will also provide some creativity and attacking threat of his own that Hemdani will not. The only other option would be Brahim but with him off form Thomson gets the nod. RM - Novo earned the right to start last week after coming off the bench to great effect against Caley. Unfortunately he had to come off the bench midweek again, but it was whilst he was on we killed the tie off with the goal. I don't beleive Whittaker is match fit and don't see any other competition for the position with McCulloch taking one of the forward roles. Forward - McCulloch has been one of our best summer signings. His work rate and physical presence will prove a useful foil for his partner and also a decent outlet for the defence and midfield. Forward - Boyd if he is fit. Exactly the kind of game where he can bag a goal or two and get his season off and running. The Gers biggest goal threat should start every league game. The above would be my team for this weekend. However with Thomson fit, WS likes his middle 3 and may go with the 4-5-1/4-3-3. I hope not. I am also unsure as to Boyd's fitness, however with JCD almost certainly out we wont have many other options. Cousin signed today but I don't think he can go straight into the starting line up with only a few potential training sessions with his new team mates. Edit: Cousin signed as I typed this up.
  8. Rams eye up Hemdani By PETER JARDINE Premiership new boys Derby County are lining up a £1million bid for Rangers midfielder Brahim Hemdani. Manager Billy Davies and his Pride Park staff are believed to have monitored the player in the recent Ibrox friendly win over Chelsea. And now they could invite Walter Smith to decide if he wants to part with Hemdani, who has two years left on his contract in Glasgow. The Frenchman could be tempted by the lure of Premiership wages, while Rangers may feel they could redirect the funds elsewhere during the remainder of the transfer window. With Kevin Thomson, Barry Ferguson, Lee McCulloch, Steven Whittaker and Charlie Adam all chasing places, Smith already has a series of Scottish options as cover for the midfield. Former Marseille captain Hemdani was signed on a Bosman by Alex McLeish before his final season in charge, but injury troubled the 29-year-old initially at Ibrox. He won a regular place last year under Paul le Guen and Smith and scored spectacular goals against Celtic and Osasuna. He was then later named as the club's in-house Player of the Year. Sources close to Hemdani suggest he may be content to remain at Rangers but a Derby bid could change that situation and there may be other interest if it becomes clear that he might be allowed to leave.
  9. Uefa launches inquiry into racism Beasley scored in the Champions League tie against Zeta Uefa has said it will hold an inquiry into alleged racist taunts during Rangers' 1-0 Champions League qualifying victory over FK Zeta. Goalscorer DaMarcus Beasley and Jean-Claude Darcheville were both subjected to verbal abuse by home fans. Uefa spokesman William Gaillard told BBC Five Live: "We have decided to open an investigation as there were many witnesses who reported the problems. "Our policy is zero tolerance towards racism. We take this issue seriously." Interview: Rangers manager Walter Smith Interview: Rangers' Barry Ferguson He added: "We have to find out the hard facts and that will be done through the reports of the referee and the delegates. This is the 21st century and we are still having trouble with racism DaMarcus Beasley "Also, if there were any other independent observers at the game, send us their reports and we always take those into account. "We will be thorough in our investigations." Beasley, who hit the 81st-minute winner against Zeta, had earlier urged Fifa and Uefa to take action. "That's something Fifa and Uefa must fight with and solve," he said. The United States international revealed he suffered similar abuse when playing for previous club PSV Eindhoven. "This is the 21st century and we are still having trouble with it," he stated. "I've faced that kind of situation throughout my whole career in Europe, not so much during my playing days in England, but even in Holland I've had similar problems." Uefa will also consider incidents in which bottles were thrown from a stand containing home supporters when Zeta were denied a penalty in the second half - and an incident of Rangers substitute Charlie Adam being struck by a lighter. Red Star Belgrade could be the next opponents for Rangers in the Champions League. The Serbian side lead Levadia Tallinn 1-0 after the first leg and face a tricky test in Estonia on Wednesday evening. MY SPORT: DEBATE Whilst not forgetting about our own issues, let's hope something is done by Uefa govanwest But Beasley recalled a Champions League qualifier he played for PSV against Red Star in August 2004, when he also came in for abuse. "I remember playing against Red Star Belgrade, and I mention them as they could be our next opponents in the Champions League, and I still remember some racist chants at that away match," he said. "I will discuss the situation with Rangers because I feel strongly about it and we will decide if we should file a complaint." There were no reported incidents of Rangers supporters misbehaving during the game. They had been warned that any incidents of sectarian chanting could result in strong-handed action by Uefa against the club. Rangers manager Walter Smith praised his side for subduing the threat of Zeta to progress from the second round of Champions League qualifying. "It was always going to be a nervy game," he told BBC Sport after the 3-0 aggregate victory. "I thought we handled it well. "Zeta showed in the first game that they are dangerous if allowed to play. "It was never going to be an easy match but we nullified any problems in the second game." Smith was particularly pleased with his defence and added: "Going through was the most important aspect but that's three competitive games without losing a goal. "That was Kirk Broadfoot's first full game, while Carlos Cuellar looks like he has played there for a long time." 11. Stumbled across an old thread bumped on FF detailing the Rangers and Celtic squads of as of 1/9/06 (Age in brackets): It makes grim reading now although there was a lot of confidence in the squads being evenly matched at the time, at least accodring to FF. Considering first the goalkeepers. With it taking a while for AM to cement his place as our number one and with erratic early season form, Celtic were stronger in terms of their no. 1. We had the better backup but due to Boruc staying relatively injury and suspension free squad strength never told in this position. Onto the defence. Bardsley was no better than Hutton early season and Hutton only took the jersey due to discipline problems from Bardsley. Hutton became the best right back in the country, but by this point the Tims had the league wrapped up. At the start of last season Celtic probably had the edge at RB, with us becoming strongest here at the season's end. Neither had a decent replacement. At LB we have the better player on his day. Smith is superior to a fairly decent Naylor. However Smith has injury troubles and I would give Celtic the nod for the LB position on last season's squads. Again a lack of a decent replacement is noted. With PLG's squad Celtic easily had a stronger pairing at CB with capable cover. Walter has taken the initiative here. We are now far stronger here but more of that later. Looking at the midfielders listed in that squad we looked to have by far the better first picks in Hemdani, Fergie and Clement versus the likes of Lennon, Jarosik and Gravesen. However our lack of strength in depth is obvious looking at the squad list. Having said that, for reasons still noted in the current set up it did not pan out with us being stronger in this position. Then, as now, we lacked pace, a bit of steel and are devoid of creativity. despite stronger individuals they seemed to have a better midfield unit. Looking at the "attacking midfielders" or wide players. They were stronger again. I don't see much between Adam and "poty" Nakamura but they were stronger on the other flank with better replacements. Ignoring Sebo (sorry) our forwards looked stronger. JvoH and Zurawski were perma-injured (new word?) and Miller and Beattie are mince. Again not sure our individual quality shone through. Boyd won top scorer but we missed out on the big prizes. So this time last year, squad analysis was done on the above squads. General consensus was we matched up well but PLG's superior management would shine through . I beleive I was of similar opinion. In summary, on paper they looked stronger in goals, that pretty much held true. Their stronger looking defence held up to that supposition too. Our stronger looking midfielders did not perform better as a unit. Neither set of strikers covered themselves in glory although Celtic's forward line can bathe in the glory of winning trophies and progressing in Europe. The fact that so many bears ended up with egg on their faces for the bold predictions made this time last year should serve as warning. However I am going to fly in the face of my own comments and predict that (on paper at least) we appear a far stronger squad than this time last year: Goalkeepers Mcgregor is established as number one with experience of playing for the Gers and European exprience. His ability to come for cross balls has improved, although many still worry about him in that respect. We have got rid of Letitzi (a wasteful purchase in the first place) and got rid of the dead weight Klos became on the wage bill. Owing to AM's improved confidence at being No1 and improved play and with Carroll and Smith in for Letitzi and apast it Klos I would argue our first pick and back up options have improved. Left back Papac was signed as a CB and that may well prove to be his best position. However playing LB he has improved over the season from a PLG reject to a player many are happy to deputise for Smith. If Smith regains fitness and with Murray as further back up I would say we are better covered here than this time last year. Right back With Hutton's vast improvement here instead of Bardsley we are definitely stronger. No room for anymore red mist momments though Alan. Whittaker should prove a better back up than Bardsley. Centre Backs What needs to be said here? What an improvement. Weir and Cuellar (a potential POTY and signing of the season) start with capable back up from Webster, Broadfoot and Ehiogu. The major difference from the PLG era. Left Midfield McCulloch if he ends up on the left he will strengthen the team. Adam did well at LM for my money last year, contributing goals and a dead ball threat. He needs to kick on from there with a vast improvement on recent performances necessary. With Beasley in too, the options are there for LM. An improvement on last year for this bear. Right midfield An undoubted weakness for us. Will Whittaker prove to be the man to fill that hole. McCulloch has filled in here although has been bought for LM or up front. Novo and Burke have filled in, sometimes well, sometimes not. Neither are the long term answer. An opportunity for Whittaker to make the position his own. Time will tell if it's an improvement on last year. Centre Midfield The only major change occured in January with Thomson replacing Clement. Clement may go on to be a stronger performer, but for Rangers KT is the better choice, he wants to play for us not just for one man. McCulloch can fill in here if needed increasing cover. As touched on earlier, in this case the stronger individuals (compared to Celtic) does not equate to a stronger whole in terms of the midfield unit. As stated we lack pace, dig and creativity. Debbte rages as to how to include the quality individuals of BF, BH and KT into an effective Rangers midfield. One of Walters big problems at the momment. Forwards Boyd needs to rediscover the goalscoring touch. When he's scoring he's our main and only real (CA aside) goal threat. A wee rest may do him good, however Sebo-esque backing might do wonders for the player too. Many want to give Sebo a chance, others want him sold. Walter says we wont pay anyone off and noone would pay a fee for him, so we continue to hope he comes good, but I have my doubts. Darcheville is not as good as Prso at his peak, but that is not the Dado we saw last year. Novo is a useful replacement who still lacks composure and a decent touch but is held in high regard for his work rate. If Boyd is off form we are very weak upfront, not much has changed from last year then. As I say it is clear there has been a vast improvement in squad depth across all playing positions. Some major improvements have occured since PLG's era in quality as well, notably in defence. However the improvement in quality has not been enough for some fans, with no "star" names brought in this summer. According to SDM we will have one or two more to come to complete this squad. It looks a lot stronger on paper, but on the field two main issues seem to arise. The lack of pace, creativity and obvious first picks in central midfield. Secondly, where the goal threat comes from one Boyd is not banging them in. The next step is to compare this year XI to that from the other side of the city. (Sorry for a long and possibly boring post, but seeing the aforementioned thread on FF tonight sparked a lot of thinking for me).
  12. Chelsea's Frank Lampard has hailed Rangers fans as 'awesome' after Saturday's friendly at Ibrox. Although an almost full-strength Chelsea side suffered their first pre-season loss in Glasgow, going down 2-0 to late goals from Nacho Novo and Filip Sebo, Lampard described the occasion as the best friendly he has been involved in after being blown away by the home crowd. The England international said: "The Rangers fans were awesome, all the lads were talking about it. "The reception I got when I went to take corners during the game, and after when we were going off, was really nice. "They certainly love their own team, but it was very special to get that welcome. It was amazing really, and a very good game to play in for us, certainly the best friendly we've had. Next up for Rangers is their Champions League second round qualifier against Montenegrin champions Zeta and Lampard believes Walter Smith's men can see off the minnows and negotiate their way through a third qualifying round to make the lucrative group stages of the competition. "With that kind of backing from their crowd, they will be hard to beat. And I expect to see Rangers in the Champions League," Lampard said. Says it all. Wasnt at the game. Watched it pished on holiday. All i have heard is how good the fans were! Pat on the back to those who were there! WATP
  13. I hope he at least has a good idea, or is prepared to change things and is not afraid of dropping the "certs" Ferguson and Boyd.
  14. Anyone going along? I saw on the official site individual tickets can be bought for 18 quid each or the pair for 34. Id sure be going along to the Chelsea game if I was over and id get the chance to sing at Fat Frank Anyway, Walter has now said pre-season is effectively over after the Falkirk game and now its all about getting a settled team in place for the Champions League qualifier. So these games will be interesting to see who Smith picks and what formation he goes with. Also if he sticks with the same team for both games. I noticed Sionko was the only sub not used against Falkirk so I think we can effectively rule him out!! But with McCulloch banging in a few goals I will be interested to see if he starts upfront or on the left and if so where Beasley plays.
  15. Was reading over on FF that he may never play football again because he keeps on breaking down in training and is seriously fucked! A lot of people backing the rumour up. Good chance it could be true. Also, someone said that was why WS hasn't sold Papac or Murray. Tragic if true.
  16. With Pre-season friendlies well under way I thought id kick up a debate prior to the Champions League qualifiers. Over the summer weeks we have spoke about players coming in and out and all the rumours. But after getting plenty additions for the squad it looks as thought the trolley is full and we are at the check-outs after spending the best part of 6 million. Whether those who have came in are good enough is another debate, we all believe the depth in the squad is better but we all agree we could have been done with a higher profile name or two to go straight into the starting line up. So, after 2 trophyless seasons what must our realistic targets be for this season? and are we well enough equipped to meet that targets? Lets break it down into each competition we will enter. SPL - Finishing 3rd 2 seasons ago was a wake up call and last season we expected huge improvement only for it to get worse. If Walter Smith did not arrive then its anyones guess where we would have finished. But he improved us and we created a gap between ourselves and the pack chasing 2nd place. This season Smith doesnt have the excuse he is steading the ship - thats been done. However we did look the more stronger in the 2nd half of last season. We need to get off to a good start and the silly results against the bottom sides must be erased. Smith has shown he still knows how to get the better of Celtic so let that continue. The aim IMO is to win the league, its certainly not out of our reach, but at the minimum we have to at least be in the hunt by easter and not have it all over by Halloween. Domestic Cups - The less said about last years runs the better. They were nothing less than embarrassing. The 90s saw us winning cups left, right and centre but we havent been to Hampden for a Scottish cup final for 5 years now. Again IMO we should be looking to lift one of the cups, preferrably the Scottish cup. Europe - Champions League qualification is a MUST for financial reasons and to give us something to look forward to. It is also huge to get us progressing again on the park. Are we equipped to take on the big boys - No, probably not yet but we will still give it a crack. A good run would be to finish 3rd in a group (depending who we draw) and then entering the UEFA cup after Xmas. Anything more from the CL is a bonus, but we cant let Celtic go on and have another crack at it while making 10 million in the process while we are not even in it. Time will tell Bears but I expect us to be stronger domestically than the previous 2 seasons.
  17. Anyone know anything about this:
  18. Thanks to Gribz and the request to be pinned in a few sections. Hopefully the Mods/Admin can keep on top of further transfer business over the coming weeks. Cheers to Gribz btw
  19. You know we've signed about 11 players - a whole team but somehow the close season has really dragged. I don't think any of us are sated yet, but could that be to do with the signings being mere snacks rather than gourmet meals...? And we were pretty much starving to start with! However size of the squad has a less starved look to it; it was verging on anorexic under Le Guen. I think we need two good players for each position and an extra understudy just in case. The latter can be a decent youngster, oldster, squad player, utility player or a player that has a few good positions. Under Le Guen most of our team fell into those categories. However it's been the making of a few, with MacGregor, Hutton, Smith, Burke and Adam all holding down a place at some point. Hemdani has also come out of his squad/utility player persona to grab a first pick spot. We have a new fitness coach so it will be interesting in the new season to see if the squad get more fit or less than under le Guen. He may have some good methods but I reckon he needs to learn more about motivation which is also a huge factor. It seems to be something that Walter excells at.
  20. I know the Robinson story is an old one, but in the official site story it mentions a new youth loan signing:
  21. Taken from The Evening Times website..... I'd take him in a second. Great player.
  22. Anyone remember him from our game, i think he played in the first leg but not the second. the first leg we could not break down there defence so there is a positive. beasley was a good player but has faded away, lets hope he can get his career on track at Ibrox
  23. So we finally get cover for the left midfield after years of having nobody in this position. We now have Beasley, Adam, Gow and even Thomson who can play there and Lee McCulloch will be another if he ever completes his move. But all of a sudden our right side is vacant. Sionko wants out as he and Smith dont talk and Burke is not up to the job over a season as he is weak and injury prone. 1 or 2 fans have said Sionko should be gievn another chance and im all for given players a 2nd chance so this one is all about opinion. However, Faubert would have been the answer and in typical Rangers fashion we lost out on him due to Murray and Bain. The player was begging to join us and even went on strike to try and get his deal. But Faubert must be forgotten now although we wont forget the reasons why he never signed. And if we see him flying in the EPL next season it will be a sickener. So who do we turn our attentions to?? Is there anyone realistically out there who we can go for. I seriously am racking my brains thinking if there is anyone affordable because IMO he needs to be a first teamer. I know I might get pelters for this but Ray Parlour is a free agent. Ok, he is 33/34 and would be another stop gap signing but his experience wouldnt do us any harm and I still think he could do a job in the SPL for a season until we identify someone. He cant be any worse than Burke anyway!! Suggestions?
  24. McGregor Hutton Weir Webster Papic Hendami Fergie Thompson Beasley Boyd JCD -------------- IMO, the above team is a long way short of being thought of as Champions material and will struggle to overcome a decent and well organised European outfit. We still require at least 5 new signings - a left back to cover Smith, a centre half, right midfield player, a quality/ creative midfield player and a centre forward. I don't mean 5 'squad players, but 3 'first teamers' and 2 squad players. Over to you flim-flan man Cammy F
  25. Think this is a great signing , has been a very busy day at Murray Park
