Recommended films and TV

Recommended Posts

After stumbling onto a real good watchable-find after a Gersnet thread, I thought I'd start a new thread as a sticky. Simple idea - if you see a film/series you think was worth watching, stick it's name in here.

Films I've seen recently:

Wilde - biopic on Oscar Wilde, Stephen Fry as the lead. 4/5

You will like this if you liked: Anything with Stephen Fry really, or have an interest in Wilde's poetry/drama/life.

Dylan Moran - Like totally live 4/5

You will like this if you liked: Black books, any sort of literate standup

The Matador 3.5/5

You will like this if you liked: Dunno, it's a different sort of a film - best I've seen Brosnan act. A hitman in a midlife crisis.

The Kingdom 3.5/5

You will like this if you liked: It's like a less sophisticated Body of Lies, but still enjoyable. Foxx is a good actor.

Ed Byrne - Whimsical and Pedantic 4/5

You will like this if you liked: Mock the week type humour.

City Of Lost Children 4.5/5

You will like this if you liked: Delicatessen, Ron Perlman films

There will be blood 5/5

You will like this if you liked: I dunno, it's quite one-off. But in its way it feels similar to No Country for Old Men and 3:10 to Yuma.

My own recommendations of late:

Film

- Downfall (Der Untergang)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363163/

Made infamous of late by the various Youtube parodies, Traudl Junge (Lara), the final secretary for Adolf Hitler (Ganz), tells of the Nazi dictator's final days in his Berlin bunker at the end of WWII.

Extremely realistic and enjoyable film.

9/10

- Valkyrie

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0985699/

Based on actual events, a plot to assassinate Hitler is unfurled during the height of WWII. OK, this is Hollywood and Tom Cruise with annoying English accents and no subtitles but this thriller was surprisingly enjoyable as well. An interesting contrast to 'Downfall' and a great story if you've not heard of the plot before.

7/10

- The Wrestler

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1125849/

A faded professional wrestler must retire, but finds his quest for a new life outside the ring a dispiriting struggle.

Having no interest in wrestling and not really a fan of Mickey Rourke, I approached this with an element of doubt despite the critical acclaim. Bleak but realistic, this is a wonderful piece of film-making and the last scene will remain with you for a long time!

On a similar note Frankie, Hitler featuring Robert Carlyle (with an appearance by Peter O'Toole as von Hindenburg) is absolutely brilliant. I was writing an honours dissertation on more or less the same events at the time this came out, and it's incredibly historically accurate. Well worth watching. What is it about Carlyle and psychos?

  • 2 weeks later...

- Frost/Nixon

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870111/

Have had this DVD in the house for a couple of weeks but haven't got round to making time to watch it. Glad I finally did last night over a quiet beer or two as it really is a fine play. Langella as Nixon is fantastic (though possibly plays him too sympathetically) and the overall period and story told well by Ron Howard.

I watched The Great Buck Howard on the plane the other day. John Malkovic is very funny in it and it had me laughing out loud a few times. Pretty good to pass time on a flight.

- Gran Torino

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1205489/

Disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbour, a young Hmong teenager, who tried to steal Kowalski's prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino.

Clint Eastwood is superb in this fine movie which nods its head to 'Dirty Harry' and Westerns in a film that is both extremely funny and very sad at the same time.
