Would a Govan publican be as effective as David?

Recommended Posts

Rangers may well have won the SPL title on the final weekend of the season in May, but it is Celtics fans who are striding confidently toward the new season with a spring in their step.

Deprived on the last day of a fourth straight championship, Celtic have spiced up the summer with new manager Tony Mowbray and £3.8million striker Marc-Antoine Fortune.

Thats just the sort of pick me up that fans need in the cricket season, proof that their season ticket money is not only valued but has been counted and invested in the future.

Over at Ibrox however, the silence has been deafening. Christian Dailly, Brahim Hemdani and Graeme Smith have left, but in Rangers defence, they do rely on other parties to take their surfeit of superfluous players.

But more importantly, not the slightest hint of new men coming in. No indication that some of the Champions League cash is going to be spent on improving a side which made a painful, early exit from Europe last time.

It is always very dangerous to start criticising individuals in football over an unwillingness to spend. We are all entitled to privacy over our finances and they should be no different.

But what is the point in having Sir David Murray, one of the most successful businessmen in Scotlands proud fiscal history, at Rangers if he is unable to improve the product in the team?

It is no secret that Murray is not a football man. From his schooldays rugby was his game and he only became involved in football because at the time the Rangers brand was a bargain.

Since that day in November 1986, when he bought the club from Lawrence Marlborough for £6m, Murray has been great for Rangers and the club has been the boyâs toy from heaven.

But now is the time for the chairman to be bold and find from somewhere in these harshest of times, investment cash for Walter Smith so that he can more readily do his work.

The manager gave up his job with the national side to come back to Ibrox and pull Murray out of the crap after his disastrous recruitment of the floundering Frenchman, Paul Le Guen.

The former Rangers manager had already pledged that he would not return to club management, although of course he never did bargain for his boyhood club coming for him again and he could not say no.

In two and a half years Smith has made Rangers champions once more ââ?¬â?? from a team that couldnââ?¬â?¢t buy a win ââ?¬â?? but now all that sacrifice and hard work seems to be misplaced.

If Sir David cannot come up with funds with which to oil the wheels of Rangers Football Club, there is no real point in him being there. The club would just as well having a Govan publican with no cash to spend. At least he would be totally committed.

Times are tough, no doubting that, but at Rangers, unlike many other businesses, the season ticket take-up will be close to what has come to be expected, as will all the other periphery spends.

There is no doubt that Smith is the man to hold on to the title once again, given some support from his chairman. But hearing that ââ?¬Å?nothing continues to happen at Ibroxââ?¬Â is just not good enough.

I was thinking of doing an article along these lines last week but never got round to it. Honest! I had already started. It was to be called David Murray what should we expect from you. Och well i have to agree with the guy what is the use of having a multimillionaire chairman if he isn't going to help us out. As the reporter says anyone with a bit of business knowledge could do what Murray is doing.

Ha ha, just read the first few paragraphs of this but I just wrote up an alternative view sort of peice to this in the writers forum.

Edit: I meant my peice is an alternative view in that we should not be worrying that as of yet we have not made great splashes in the transfer market this summer. Nothing to do with Murray.

Who is the reporter ?.

Just another load of shite IMO,we all know what we would like Rangers/SDM to do regarding signing players, however we all also all know it can't/won't be done until we get rid of the excess players.

We still have the best team,IMO,and am not too concerned with the MOPES transfer activity

Agreed. Unless Celtic raise eyebrows with a signing or 2 of top class players then Im not bothered at all with who they have signed.

Also agree we still have the best team, but we do have a 1 or 2 more dead wood to rid also.
