Why is Kevin Thomson banned for Rangers while Danny Wilson is available?

 

Both Rangers players were shown red cards in Sunday's cup final but only one player misses their team's next match. Why? STV Sport have all the answers.

Kevin Thomson and Danny Wilson were both sent off in Sunday�s Co-operative Insurance Cup final but only one will be forced to sit out their Scottish Cup quarter final replay with Dundee United on Wednesday night. Midfielder Thomson will have to watch from the stands after his lunging tackle on St Mirren�s Steven Thomson earned him a red but Wilson will be free to partner David Weir in defence.

 

So why, given both were shown straight red cards by referee Craig Thomson in the match, is one free to play while the other has to sit it out?

 

The Scottish Football Association, who are responsible for handling all disciplinary matters across all of Scotland�s league and cup competitions, set out different levels of punishment for players depending on the severity of the offence they are responsible for.

 

In Thomson�s case, as he was sent off for serious foul play he must automatically sit out his team�s next game, regardless of which domestic competition it is in. Had Rangers� next match been in the Scottish Premier League, he still would have served an automatic one match suspension.

 

Thomson�s red card added another 12 points to his disciplinary tally for the season, taking him over the 18 point threshold. As a result, Thomson will also be suspended for Rangers� SPL game with Aberdeen at Ibrox on April 7.

 

Wilson�s dismissal for denying Craig Dargo an obvious goalscoring opportunity incurs a different punishment. As it is in this case, of if he had denied a goal, used offensive language or received a second yellow card, the penalty is less severe.

 

Instead, Wilson will not serve his ban until Rangers� first participation in the 2010/11 Co-operative Insurance Cup. He is free to participate in his team�s remaining Scottish Cup matches this season and, to date, has a clear disciplinary record in the competition.

 

Lee McCulloch is banned for the trip to Tannadice on Wednesday, courtesy of yellow cards shown in the original tie with Dundee United and in the 2-0 replay win over Hamilton Academical in the fourth round.

 

Steven Whittaker and Kirk Broadfoot are both one yellow card away from suspension in the Scottish Cup, having been booked against Hamilton, albeit in separate matches.

 

Raith Rovers, who lie in wait for the winners of the Rangers versus Dundee United quarter final replay, have two players ââ?¬â?? Allan Walker and Grant Murray ââ?¬â?? a yellow card away from potentially missing the Scottish Cup final.

 

Georgios Samaras and Paul Caddis are also a semi-final booking away from missing the final, as Celtic wait to face the winners of Tuesday night�s replay between Ross County and Hibernian.

 

Six Dundee United players could miss the semi-finals if they emerge victorious against Rangers on Wednesday night with another yellow card to their names. Garry Kenneth, Paul Dixon, Danny Grainger, Dusan Pernis, Danny Swanson and Darren Dods are all already on a booking and one further moment of indiscipline could cost them a place against Raith.
