Derby Joy For 19s

RANGERS stormed to the top of the SPL U19 table with a fantastic 4-2 win over Celtic at Barrowfield today.

Kal Naismith grabbed the headlines with two goals either side of Dylan McGeouch's brilliant strike, after Christiano Kisuka gave Gers the perfect start.

There were just 33 seconds on the clock when the big striker met McGeouch's cross from the right to put the Light Blues in front.

From there the visitors enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges although Rangers keeper Wayne Drummond did well to block a drive after 8 minutes.

Billy Kirkwood's side looked threatening when they attacked but on occasions were wasteful in possession.

McGeouch and Naismith both failed to find an end product after two strong runs on the ten minute mark.

Rangers' Robbie Crawford and Celtic's Patrik Twardzik then exchanged long range efforts with the latter calling Drummond in to action again.

But just moments after that warning shot from the home team Gers increased their lead with 22 minutes on the clock.

With just a little quality missing in the final third up to that point Naismith found his range with a brilliant 20 yard free kick that curled in to the top corner.

Celtic responded in the second half of the opening period and after a short spell of pressure they were given the opportunity to get back in to the game when Kyle McAusland pulled down Liam Gormley in the box.

Callum Bagshaw duly converted, although Drummond was close to getting a hand to it, and Celtic were back in it with three minutes of the half remaining.

Kirkwood wanted more quality from his side in the second half and he didn't have to wait long for it as McGeouch picked the ball up on the right, turned away from a challenge and rifled a fantastic effort over the despairing Celtic keeper Robbie Thomson.

That should have made things more comfortable for the visitors but they conceded another penalty within a minute, this time Darren Cole being the culprit.

And Bagshaw made no mistake from the spot with a perfect second penalty sending Drummond the wrong way.

The game became increasingly fractious from that point with Celtic desperate to get back in to the match.

But it was Naismith who killed off their hopes in the 80th minute when he capitalised on good work from Kisuka.

The striker showed great strength to win the battle with Celtic captain Matthew Hughes but his chip over Thomson came back off the bar and it was Naismith who tucked home to ensure the Light Blues went back to the top of the under-19 table.

Kal Naismith always seems to be scoring and doing well,I wonder how far away he is from the first team??

Hard to say, but Elfideldo might know more. The lad is still only 18, but you'd think with our squad being so small he'll maybe be promoted within the next year if he's going to make the step up for us.

It really is up to Kal, he has loads of talent, but can also be frustrating at times. Today was Kal at his best, sometimes he can overplay and not make the pass, when he first appeared he wanted to do a trick everytime he got the ball and still has a tendency to do that at times. Was a regular in Scotland teams when he was younger, but hasn't been involved for a while. I am sure that has little to do with his actual ability and more to do with his attitude at times. He has real talent and I hope he can make full use of it.

The coaches at Rangers and Scotland would be best placed to answer that, but you don't go from a mainstay in the victory shield squad to not being selected without a reason, and it certainly isn't down to ability. Sometimes he wants to play on his own and when he gets the ball he keeps it till he loses it. He seems to have learned that you don't have to do a trick every time you get the ball, hopefully he will kick on from here and use the talent he has.
