Good news.

Rangers have tied down promising midfield young gun Jamie Ness on a new two-year contract.

Ibrox gaffer Walter Smith made sure the 19-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal before handing him a starting slot in Sundays Old Firm showdown with Celtic.

Despite losing the game 2-0, rookie Ness handled the white-hot derby atmosphere well and was his sides best performer.

And that is why Smith made sure the club offered the player regarded as the cream of the new Murray Park crop a new deal just before Christmas.

Ness, above, had six months of his contract to run, and its understood Rangers were considering loaning him out to gain first-team football after a series of injury problems.

Indeed, Third Division Clyde have revealed they were in the running to land him on a short-term deal.

Manager Stuart Millar said: ââ?¬Å?We had high hopes of taking Jamie on loan. We took it as an honour that they were thinking of sending him.ââ?¬Â

Meantime, Smith is hoping the return of Nikica Jelavic and Steven Naismith can hand his side a major boost after their Old Firm defeat.

Croatian internationalist Jelavic, out of action since October, is expected back in Glasgow this week to step up his preparations for a first-team return.

The £4m summer signing was allowed to complete most of his rehabilitation from ankle ligament damage in his homeland.

But he will now train at Murray Park under the watchful eye of the Rangers medical team.

Smith has been told to expect the striker to return to full training within the next week or so with a possible top team return against Hamilton Accies on January 15.

Smith is also hoping to see Naismith back to full fitness after he missed Sundays showdown with a hamstring injury.

He could make Mondays Scottish Cup clash with former club Kilmarnock, however, no chances will be taken.

And Maurice Edu could also return to face Killie next week.

Meanwhile, Marseille have been the latest club linked with a move for Kenny Miller.

His contract talks with Rangers remain unchanged, and the French giants are said to be monitoring his situation in the knowledge he is now into the last five six months of his Ibrox contract.
