El-Hadji Diouf's virtually unrivalled capacity to attract controversy has once again been demonstrated by his declaration that he admires Colonel Gaddafi.

Diouf, currently on loan at Rangers from Blackburn Rovers, has reportedly told an African magazine that he is friends with the Libyan dictator, who is currently attempting to quell a rebellion that has received the backing of Nato.

Despite outrage over the violence employed by Gaddafi to repress pro-democracy protestors, and widespread condemnation of his rule from across the international community, Diouf says he has sympathy for the man known as 'Mad Dog'.

"Gaddafi is a man who I have always admired," Diouf is quoted in the Daily Mail. "I am telling the truth. I know him, and I know his son Saif as well. They are my friends.

"I do not honestly know what is really happening in Libya at the moment, but it must be very hard for Gaddafi and his family.

"I cannot remain far away from what is happening in Libya. I do not know who is in the right and who is wrong, but it is a shame to see so many victims."

Since moving to Rangers in January, Diouf has been involved in heated confrontations with Celtic, but he may also now incur the anger of his own manager Walter Smith after saying that defender Madjid Bougherra should leave the club.

Diouf said of his colleague: "Madjid needs a new challenge at the end of the season and he has to go to the Premier League and nowhere else."

Diouf: Kerkar has a bit of Zidane in him

The on-loan Rangers player tips his young team-mate to go onto big things in the game, once he breaks into the first team at Ibrox.

El Hadji Diouf has tipped Rangers fringe player Salim Kerkar to have a big future, insisting the 23-year-old has shown flashes of having the talents of Zinedine Zidane.

Kerkar joined the club from French third tier club FC Gueugnon in November after a protracted transfer. But the Algerian has failed to make a first team appearance, sitting on the bench on numerous occasions for Walter Smith’s team.

Diouf though believes the winger has “exceptional potential” and can not only go on to make an impact at Rangers but also has the talent to be a big player on the international stage.

“Salim is a player who has great qualities,” Diouf told Le Buteur. “I mean, a lot of qualities. Certainly he's not playing yet, but his time will come, I am sure.

“I think if we take care of him, Salim can be one of the best players in the selection of Algeria in the future. I train every day with him and I can swear he has exceptional potential.

“There is a bit of Zizou in him and the future will prove me right. He is a very good player.”

Kerkar’s move to Rangers went through after Gueugnon dropped a claim for training compensation for the player, with an undisclosed settlement being reached between the two clubs.

The player has had to wait for his chance in Walter Smith’s team and, despite failing to play to date, said earlier in April he was happy with his progress at the club.

“Of course I'm glad I opted for Rangers, even though I have not played a competitive match to date,” he told Le Buteur. “I put my misfortune to one side, knowing that I'm progressing at all levels.

“I train every time with a bit more desire and I'm sure it will eventually bear fruit one day. I meet top players every day and I know I must raise my game a little more for me to get a place.”

Boughie hasn't been at his best for most part of the season, TBH. Good enough for us and the SPL no doubt, but we've seen him a better standard consistently before. Not saying that I want him to move, of course.

EHD & Gaddafi ... well, to each his own. We shouldn't start judging him on such remarks though, as long as we are nose-lead by the news to believe what we hear (remember all those weapons of mass destruction in Iraq) and are governed by people who happily sell weapons to e.g. Saudi Arabia, where people live under a regime to which that of Gaddafi looks like utter freedom.

I know he's not been at his best, indeed I posted about the 600K link with QPR saying I feel he's actually worth that now, albeit that may be harsh on reflection...so I am a fairly big critic of his displays this season; my point is no Rangers player should encourage any other to leave.

Don't really want to get all religious but find it difficult these days - but didn't the current pope once admire Hitler? Does he admire all previous popes, some of which have caused a lot more harm than Gaddafi? I also can't see Gaddafi being much worse than the IRA. One thing I do agree about though, is that he should keep stuff like that to himself - especially when he's at the club I support.
