Kyle Bartley groin strain adds to Rangers' defensive injury woes

rangers ace kyle bartley suffers a groin strain at inverness

RANGERS boss Ally McCoist is facing a defensive crisis ahead of Thursday's Europa League crunch with NK Maribor.

Stopper Kyle Bartley is a serious doubt for the trip to Slovenia after hobbling out of his first SPL game back at the club with a groin problem.

And following yesterday's 2-0 win at Inverness the Ibrox gaffer also confirmed a deal to sign former favourite Carlos Cuellar from Aston Villa is now officially off because the Spanish stopper is still crocked.

With skipper David Weir injured, Lee McCulloch struggling, and Sasa Papac and Steven Whittaker suspended, it leaves McCoist with only Kirk Broadfoot, Lee Wallace, Dorin Goian and youngster Ross Perry as stoppers.

And he sighed: "It's disappointing Kyle is sitting in there with an ice pack. If you're having to come off in the first half with something like that then you'd expect to be doubtful for Europe.

"We'll need to wait until the morning for a proper diagnosis.

"But big Davie Weir won't make it, Lee McCulloch has a wee chance and the others are suspended.

"Ross Perry came on against Inverness and even he took a wee twist late on - although he did it making an absolutely crucial block."

McCoist still has the option to bring one player into his squad for the Euro ties - but it won't be Cuellar who is still nursing a knee injury.

And with a deal for Roland Juhasz now off the table as well, a loan move for Liverpool's Danny Wilson could yet be on the cards.

McCoist said: "Everyone knows how much I think of Carlos but I need someone who can play now.

"So that deal is definitely over - for this transfer window. We may yet go back to it later."

The manager also denied reports which surfaced from Holland that the club were interested in Feynoord winger Diego Biseswar.

He was, however, delighted with the win in the Highlands which was sealed by goals from Nikica Jelavic and Maurice Edu.

But McCoist did voice his displeasure at midfielder Edu for being sent off with a needless second yellow late on.

The Ibrox gaffer said: "Mo's finish for the goal was top class but I needed to have a word with him after the game.

"Even if you think the first booking was a bit soft he gave the referee the opportunity to send him off by going to ground.

"And it's only natural for a whistler to want to even the numbers up in a game. That's not a criticism, it's just human nature.

"However, we were comfortable in the game and there was no need for the challenge."

I guess this will open the way for a Wilson deal to get put in place. No complaints here if it does he will be an excellent addition. If we loan him to xmas we could bring in Carlos in January. We could even be cheeky and offer Liverpool 1.5 million for him.;)

Yep, Benalouane might be that option* - if we were actually interested. As for the article, another one of the "spread panic" variety. Nothing is known about Bartley's injury, but they make it a crisis. Weir was AFIAK ready for yesterday, but we were covered and so he got more time to recover. Whittaker I did not miss, Papac would always be a good option to have. Who knows what will transpire over the next few days.

*We do need one central defender with a bit of pace.

First come, first serve. We made our interest known and asked whether he was available and at what price. Nothing more, nothing less. No-one knew that it would drag on and I assume our docs only got his medical status once we were allowed to talk to him.

Wonder why we bid for Carlos in the first place. We knew he was out for a long while.

His recovery must be taking longer than expected because when they heard we had supposedly made the bid Villa fans were saying he was only a couple of weeks away from returning to training. Now it looks like the goal posts have been moved on his return.

I am sure he was always going to miss a month of the season Zappa and from what i have read he is on that schedule.

No, I'm pretty sure that he's not on schedule in terms of recovery pete. When our bid was supposedly accepted he said himself that he'd just seen a specialist in London and hoped to be running again within 2 weeks. If he was still on that schedule he'd probably be back in training by now and we wouldn't be getting fed stories about us pulling out because he's still injured.

Anyway, I can't say I'm surprised that we've pulled out because I openly said I doubted we'd complete the transfer even after the bid was supposedly accepted.

So if we pay £1.5 million for Wilson, do we have a sell on clause and get a % of that fee?

If Wilson is available on loan we should get him now as we will more than likely need a few CB's over the next few months, plus the fact he's a quality player as I was reminded by is performance against Denmark the other night.
