How to accurately gauge real interest in fan ownership/membership.

Recommended Posts

A serious survey at Ibrox.

50,000 survey cards handed out, completed and collected.

The survey is extremely well publicised in the week running up to the event.

Publicity means people would be well prepared and know EXACTLY what the plans are.

If people know what the plans are, then the survey questions could be relatively simple, making it quick to complete.

The survey cards can have an optional name & address entry or email address entry.

A survey at Ibrox would provide more accurate results than an online survey which anyone can complete.

.

Those who wish to take the bull by the horns and organise something serious please start by organising a serious survey.

Problem is surveys, no matter how official, do not reflect action, only intention at that moment in time. They just aren't useful bar generalising with vague stats.

A survey at Ibrox is the only way to even remotely gauge the opinions of the Rangers fans. It wouldn't be 100% accurate, but it would be more accurate than an online survey and it would also reach the thousands of ticket buying fans who don't participate on forums or social networking sites.

Wouldn't be too hard to ask all ST holders and the fans who subscribe to RTV at home and worldwide you would know you were actually talking to a Rangers fan then. For guys who buy tickets a quick survey at the ticket cabin on pick up or slipped in the envelope if they get posted out.

You could also ask for a payment of say £10 when you reg on line which can be refunded if nothing comes of it or goes toward your final investment if it gets off the ground that should keep the Mhanks away because they all spend their giro on drugs.

Spot on Allan. Those would be ways of doing it if doing it en masse on a match day was a logistical problem.

I don't agree. It will sample 50k fans at a single moment in time, with a question which they'll answer based on how they feel at that exact moment in time. All surveys do is measure your response to a question based on how it's worded, not what you will actually do.

And ultimately, as I said, it's only a sample of 50k max.

I also agree with Calscot - it eliminates those who don't get to matches.

In some ways, you're implying those at matches are the real fans, and ones who can't get to games aren't?

One last thing, no matter what the medium, method, or audience is, surveys are always useless to the same level. You can't trust a questionnaire for reliability. It just gives a nice number you can use to generalise with.

In this scenario there is no full measure of "real fans". It doesn't matter - what counts is that there are fans who are willing and able to put money into the club whether they go to games or not (or a specific game). Some aren't willing and many aren't able.

There is more to being a fan than going to the games - which requires money, free time, location and logistics as well as many other factors.

However, there is a fact that has been smashed into our faces - the club MUST be owned by the fans. There are now no ifs and buts now - we have seen the actual and potential extremes which can happen to club under the ownership of one man.

The question is not now of whether we should, but a question of "how?"

We need to follow the Dortmund model once this mess is sorted out.

As I've been saying for years, football is inherently broken - and we have become one of the early sufferers of what is looming over the horizon. Perhaps, as a tiny sliver of hope, we can sort ourselves out now and get into a strong position when the shit really hits the fan for the rest of European football.

A membership level system like that of Motherwell might work (though how it can be turned into ownership is to be debated). People would pay for the certain membership levels and for the first "season of need", rich investors could easily buy e.g. 6 of these e.g. 1886 Memberships with a 25k joining up fee, while those who can afford less than that take up a membership they see fit. Members would be represented by someone with a name, someone who looks how the money is wisely spend. Someone who's a diehard Bluenose, someone the people all trust. Someone like Walter Smith.
