HMRC e-petition

Recommended Posts

MORE than 13,000 Rangers fans have signed an e-petition calling for a Government probe into the HMRC investigation that led to the collapse of the club.

And they want to know why confidential information held only by the taxman found its way to bloggers and internet sites hostile to the Ibrox club.

The e-petition was launched by fans groups̢۪ and backed by Ayrshire Central Labour MP Brian Donohoe, chairman of the Westminster Rangers Supporters̢۪ Club.

More then 13,000 people have signed up in less than 48 hours. The fans need 100,000 signatures to force a Government response.

Donohoe said: “I am giving this my full backing. If we hit 100,000, we’ll get a minister to the despatch box.â€

Earlier this week, the club̢۪s former owners won their appeal against a tax bill over their use of employee benefit trusts.

The club, who are now in liquidation, used the scheme to make £47.65million in payments to players and staff in the form of tax-free loans.

HMRC challenged the payments but a First Tier Tax Tribunal ruled they were loans that can be repaid.
