STEPHEN FRY has joined thousands of fans in backing calls for a probe into HMRC’s handling of the investigation into Rangers.

The actor and QI presenter is well known as a Norwich City supporter.

But he surprised his five million Twitter followers by publicising a petition demanding a Government probe into the taxman’s investigation that led to the collapse of Rangers.

Campaigners also want to know why confidential information about the case was leaked.

Last week, the club’s former owners won their appeal against a £80million tax bill over their use of employee benefit trusts.

Fry urged his followers to sign the online petition, saying: “You mean Rangers? Coke without Pepsi, Norwich without Ipswich, Celtic without Rangers – life would be diminished. Or am I wrong?”

It has received more than 22,000 signatures in three days.

The tweet provoked a furious response, including one which said: “You are totally wrong, Stephen.

Scottish football is more open now. You need to realise the facts first, mate.”

The e-petition was launched by fans’ groups and backed by Ayrshire Central Labour MP Brian Donohoe, chairman of the Westminster Rangers Supporters’ Club.

Donohoe said: “If we hit 100,000, we’ll get a minister to the despatch box.”

The MP also hit out after the Ibrox side’s match at Elgin City yesterday was postponed because too many tickets had been sold.

He called for prosecutions if a police probe uncovers any deliberate wrongdoing.

Donohoe said: “If this was a case of profit before safety, then a criminal act has been committed.”

I'm sure the free thinking openly gay Mr Fry isn't high on many sellik fans Christmas card lists... if you know what I mean

What annoys me most about all this is...why are we having petitions and calls for investigations now? It was clear that info was being leaked and regardless of the outcome of the appeal, someone was breaking the law

Is this the only thing they could print from a fans tweet?

The only reason it is more 'open' is because Selik are poor team with a poor manager but will still win the league easy enough. Most of the other teams are on a par but from what i've seen and heard most games are murder to watch, the football is dire to say the least and it shows by the crowds.

Even teams who are doing well and who have never been near the top of the SPL for years are getting poor crowds and the so called best supporters in the world :) are not turning up to watch their tainted champions any more. The TV ratings for Selik and the rest of the SPL are terrible.

Rangers are the most watched team in Scotland by supporters and in the TV ratings yet hardly anywhere expect outside Scotland is this reported, they really are so jealous and bitter towards us still yet Rangers and our supporters are the ones who have been totally shafted by virtually everyone and from every direction you could think off. Without us in the top flight Scottish football is dying a slow death but all they can say is 'the league is more open now'
