DARREN COLE has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal with the club after his old contract expired during the summer break.

The young defender spent more than three months on the sidelines last season following reconstructive ankle surgery.

But he made a comeback before the end of the campaign and having finally overcome the problem which plagued him for most of 2012/13, heâ??s looking to push on again this term.

Edinburgh-born Cole made his debut as an 18-year-old in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Bursaspor in Turkey back in December 2010.

But he had to wait until just under seven months ago for his next Gers outing when, following a loan spell at Partick in the first half of 2012, he played in a Scottish Cup tie with Elgin.

Cole made three more appearances last term including one in the final fixture with Berwick at Ibrox on May 4.

Now 21, the defender can play either centrally or on the right and heâ??ll compete for a place in Ally McCoistâ??s side over the next few months.

Cole was part of the senior pool which reported to Murray Park for pre-season training on Monday and is expected to play in warm-up games over the next few weeks.*

I don't want to sound heartless, but should we really be giving a contract to someone who is always injured?

I think the lad's obviously got ability. If he could stay fit then he'd be a definite candidate for 1st choice RB. It's probably why we've only given him a year. If he wasn't homegrown then, like Hemmings, he maybe wouldn't have been offered an extension.

How much of Peralta have you seen to make such a determination ?

Dont really disagree with the rest unfortunately, although Hegarty has done well in parts (lacks consistency though, as yet) and Cole has done OK too, injury has hampered him.
