The most serious accusation against Black is he bet against his own team.

The suggestion that others have done the same is a weak argument for non-punishment but there are valid questions about this.

Of course there are lots of them, I would presume most players in Scotland would think that it's OK to bet on a game that there club is not involved in.

But in Black's case how could he possibly think that betting on or against any club he's playing for would be OK - I personally think that if the accusations are true then he has no excuse

He could have a list of a thousand such players (not sure about calling them Blackie's :hm:) and it wouldn't matter a jot.

Just because other people go through red lights isn't a defence when you get caught.

Some really silly comments from McCoist IMHO, "What I am asking for is everyone to get around the table, whether it is the Scottish FA, the players' union, Ladbrokes or William Hill, who of sponsor the Scottish Cup, to sit down and find out what is allowed and what is not allowed, and then let's start again."

The rules are clear and ignorance is no defence.

They may be silly comments but McCoist is a football manager, not a lawyer. His player should never have put. Him in this position.

But, yes, McCoist would have been better to simply hold his counsel here. But he gets hung drawn and quartered by his own so why expect any different from the media...

It's easy to see what he was trying to do; but he would have been much better to say NO COMMENT.

If Black is going to defend the charge then his lawyer should have put out a statement by now.

If Rangers are going to defend him then Rangers' lawyers should have put out a statement by now.

Some might argue with your description of McCoist as a football manager but all would surely agree that he is no lawyer.

in an industrial tribunal a general culture of something can be an effective defense though.

thats a better analogy.

Perhaps so in the case of the "ordinary" bets; but not I suspect betting against your own team, which comes extremely close to match fixing.

In response, a spokesperson for the governing body told STV: "The rule contained within the Judicial Panel Protocol, provided to all clubs, states no player or official under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA can bet in any way on a football match.

"If he [McCoist] wants any explanation on the rules, he can just pick up the phone."
