Have to say that I'm surprised at some of the criticism Ally is getting

I'm aware it was during his first spell. Gothenburg were such a crack team that they went into the group stage and finished bottom. We had 2 good European campaigns under Smith in 11 seasons

Yeah, try two great European campaigns under Smith. The season we drew at Old Trafford and knocked Sporting out was good, the Manchester and Marseille seasons were fantastic. God knows which team you've been watching in Europe since 72.

We knocked out a terrible Sporting side that neither team deserved to win.

Was this the match Darcheville and Whittaker scored? They may have been poor but it was very enjoyable watching a Rangers side play with such freedom in Europe and so well too. Some of our passing and moving was sensational. It was especially nice after some of the derogatory comments made by their keeper before the match too. No doubt they, like probably every other team who faced us that year, were complacent.

I'm definitely not talking about that match mate because that was a great achievement.

I'm talking about this one http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/9404968.stm

Thought both teams looked terrible and you can see from the match stats we hugely rode our luck. We were so poor in that game that I was close to switching off the TV.

We were very poor against PSV in the next round. Gregg Wylde had a few games where he actually looked like a quality player, the second leg was one of them.

TWB is trying to claim that was a successful European campaign for us. Getting to the last 16 of the Europa League with a huge dose of luck does not equate to a successful European campaign for me. We should be getting there as a bare minimum, with a realistic goal of reaching the last 16 in the CL most seasons.

It's funny that in Walters 2nd spell we got further in Europe twice than Advocaat with all his millions and international stars ever did.

Cant compare, one was the elite tournament the other was a huge step down. Champions league against good PSV and Bayern teams then only to be knocked out by Valencia who were the 2nd best team in Europe is not comparable with the UEFA cup opposition.

The only comparison that can be made is Walters 92-93 run which was outstanding to go out on goals against the winners.

Having world beaters like Laudrup and Gascoigne was the entertaining time for Walter because they were a joy to watch but as soon as we came up against half decent European opposition we were bereft of any thought and got found out. But he deserves credit for bringing them to Ibrox. The game in the early to mid 90s was very different so criticism of Walter then is harsh, but 2nd time around he may have steadied a ship and had that euro run but the football wasn't great on the eye. I still wish we just went for it in Manchester and lost 3 or 4 nil rather than sit back and have no chances in that final. If we did play at a high pace tempo I believe we would have won.

Gazza and Laudrup are my 2 personal all time greats and I cant split them, but neither featured in Advocaats team which would have played Walters team off the park. Advocaat's side in his first 2 seasons were very near to something special. They were too good on the eye at one stage. But importantly - they competed in Europe.

Always thought that if Mols had stayed fit or we had another top striker, this was our best chance of doing something in the modern CL. Not many teams would have wanted us in the knockout section I'm sure. Advocaats tenure is still my favourite time as a Gers fan tbh. It was last time I got excited watching us play.
