Motherwell FC lost £180,498 in the financial year that saw a second place finish in the SPL and a debut in the Champions League. The details have been made available to shareholders ahead of the club's 108th AGM next month.

The directors' report points to three factors as the main contributors to the loss.

There was an agreement to alter the distribution of the SPL's commercial pot that included a substantial reduction in the prize money allocated to the runner up position but the club's bonus deal with the football staff is not mirror that change.

The early cup exits proved to be costly. Although we had a share of the gate at Ibrox from the league Cup tie, the cut Aberdeen received from our home Scottish Cup clash was made on the basis that all spectators paid at the gate regardless that season tickets were valid. This benefit to season ticket holders appears to be under threat.

Transfer income fell below expectation.

The directors also express disappointment that no main sponsor has been found to replace the Clydesdale Bank. The effect on this season's commercial distribution is clear.

Changes to the board over the year ended 31 May 2013 include the addition of Brian McCafferty and Graham Barnstaple as Well Society nominees and the departure of John Boyle(still the majority shareholder) and Andrew Lapping. Once again the club makes it clear that it operates "without any borrowing facilities or support of a benefactor" and that the success of the Society will be "critical to the long term sustainability of the football club".

No doubt these issues and others will form the basis of the discussions that will take place at the AGM on Monday 17 February at Fir Park.

The SPFL are regularly saying that sponsorship is a small piece of the overall financial pie......yet here is a team that are saying that the lack of sponsorship payout has directly effected their annual figures......

Surely, as leader of the pack in the SPL, the team which won the champion's share of the sponsorship money, in the interest of "sporting integrity", would trickle down an amount which would cover the "loss" of the expected sponsorship money and also share the TV money acquired in the CL group stages with its fellow SPL sides.

In fact they may buy a player or two from each team to help cover their cash shortfall. After all, no one voted to make less money when the SPL rearranged itself.

How many more will publish similar accounts? We wait to see ...

Mr. Lunny, please stay on alert for any misdemeanours thay may expose themselves.

The interesting thing about this is that even although the prize money redistribution model the SPL/SPFL used was designed to hit the 2nd place Premiership team the hardest, it's quite baffling that Motherwell wouldn't have budgeted for that, especially given the fact that they wouldn't even have had a chance of finishing 2nd if they hadn't voted Rangers out of the Premiership.

It sounds like the lack of sponsorship has had the biggest effect no matter how much Doncaster & co and the Rangers haters in the Scottish football media try to paint it otherwise.

Business is BOOMING!!

It easy to guess why the money for second place was reduced - it's to to try to hit us in the pocket in our first couple of seasons back... with them presuming we won't be able to win to start with and so trying to financially handicap us for as long as possible. It would be the cherry on the pie to have a load of investment which allows us to let them reap what they sow.

That's what I immediately thought when I first looked at the redistribution figures. 1st place prize money was only reduced by about £250-300k while 2nd place prize money was reduced by about 600k (IIRC). Maybe the new prize money distribution system will prove to be better for most clubs in the long run, but in the short term it primarily serves to increase the gap between Celtic and the team beneath them in 2nd which isn't particularly healthy for the game and certainly not healthy for us if we end up coming 2nd for a few seasons when we're back in the top flight.

oK do the maths for 'Well. If they'd got a couple of Gers televised visits last season they'd probably have got somewhere between £150k to £200k per game. And they wouldn't have lost £180k then would they? don't forget too that this was the club that allegedly finished last season on its supporters trust overdraft (overdraft note not account)

Ah well (no pun intended) that's what they get when their Celtic supporter chief exec. Ms Dempster sides with Liewell by removing us from the then SPL. Liewell's strategy is quite simple by keeping all premiership clubs in poverty to allow Celt@c easy access to the CL without us.Lack of SPFL sponsorship and a paltry TV deal ensures that.
