Scottish football set to net minimum £9 million jackpot if national side qualify for Euro 2016

IF SCOTLAND reach the tournament in France, the SFA are set to receive a cash bonus that chief executive Stewart Regan hopes to invest in the next generation of footballing talent.

SCOTTISH football will land a minimum £9million jackpot if the national team qualify for Euro 2016.

And SFA chief executive Stewart Regan wants to use the money to leave a legacy for the next generation.

The qualification draw will be made today in Nice and Regan hopes Gordon Strachan can lead us back to a major finals for the first time since 1998.

The Republic of Ireland boosted their coffers by £6.5m when they made it to Euro 2012 and Regan believes our game could benefit from an even bigger cash injection.

He said: “You can’t say for definite what it is going to be worth. Budgets and prize money haven’t been communicated by UEFA but if you base it on previous tournaments it is a multi-million pound prize just for being there and the further you get the more the numbers go north.

“It will be a substantial contribution to the SFA and it could help start to put in place elements of the strategy we would like to focus on.

“Scottish football is short of money and it would be great to be able to bring cash in that the game could benefit from.

“In terms of what that’s used for, ultimately our job is to develop more elite players for Scottish football. So we would be able to put more emphasis on youth development and elite players – and do more of the work we have been doing previously through performance schools and academies.

“When you go down into the grassroots you also say, ‘How do we get more kids interested in the game?’

“You’d be asking a question a bit like the Commonwealth Games and Olympics – what would be the legacy of Scotland qualifying?

“That would be a piece of work in its own right.

“We’d need to create a legacy plan that would say, ultimately, we want more kids playing football on a regular basis as a result of seeing us in a Euro finals.”

The Commonwealth Games will have an impact on Scotland’s Euro 2016 campaign as Hampden will be out of commission for football until February.

And if UEFA’s fixture computer throws up some home qualifiers this year then the SFA will likely take the games to either Celtic Park or Ibrox.

Regan said: “There is a schedule in place and we have known all along 2014 is out for Hampden.

“There are pluses and minuses of not having Hampden for those first games. It is not as if we will be playing in a tin shed. We will be playing in a UEFA star-rated stadium.

“The venue choices will be managed by the SFA executive in partnership with the member clubs.”

I would love to see us play RoI at Ibrox. Can't believe the negativity here. Ireland man for man are not as good as us - they have no Robbie Keane now. Both our keepers are better too. Otherwise not much difference. Would love to see McCarthy and the other traitors get stuffed. Shamefully there are Scots who support Celtic who want to cheer on Ireland.
