Scotland keeper Allan McGregor set to miss rest of reason after suffering 'car crash-like injury' in pitch collision

SCOTLAND goalie Allan McGregor is expected to stay in hospital for some time after suffering a kidney injury mostly seen in car crash victims.

Hull City keeper Greegs had a sickening collision with West Ham’s Mohamed Diame as his club lost 2-1 on Wednesday.

McGregor, 32, was sent off but was immediately rushed to hospital with a suspected contusion to his kidney.

Fiancee Leah Shevlin was believed to be at his bedside last night. A City source said: “He is in a bad way. I think it is unlikely he will play again this season.

“The injury is extremely painful. We are not expecting him out of hospital any time soon.

“He has already been assessed by doctors but we can’t say anything more at this time.”

McGregor, capped 31 times for Scotland, was treated on the field and appeared to be in severe pain as he was led off.

After the match at Upton Park, Hull boss Steve Bruce said: “He’s in a bad way. He’s got kidney damage.

“The specialist is on his way to see him. He has a contusion of his kidney, which we are hoping is not ruptured.”

A contusion to the kidney – severe bruising – normally comes as a result of a lower back injury. It is mostly seen as a result of road crashes.

It causes severe pain and can cause nausea, vomiting, blood in the urine and muscle spasms in the back.

In simple cases, the patient is monitored for a few days. The kidney usually heals on its own within a week or so.

In the aftermath of the incident, Leah tweeted: “He’s getting taken to hospital, I’ll let you know how he is.”

Her followers expressed concern. And a message from Greegs’s former club Rangers said: “Hope @therealgreegsy1 is OK. Wish him speedy recovery from all at @Rangers.”

The extent of McGregor’s injury is not expected to be released until Bruce faces the media today.
