ian1964 10,409 Posted April 16, 2014 Share Posted April 16, 2014 U20: Rangers 4-0 Partick Thistle RANGERS closed in on their title rivals with a convincing win over Partick Thistle in their final home SPFL Under-20 League fixture of the season at the Bet Butler Stadium. Calum Gallagher was the star man as his hat-trick set his side on its way before substitute Dylan Dykes sealed victory late on. But more important was the fact Gordon Durie’s men had got the victory they needed to strengthen their championship prospects. Table toppers Hibs drew with Hamilton yesterday so this result means they’re only five points ahead of the Light Blues now having played three times more. Second-placed Celtic lost 2-1 at Hearts as well and they’re just a point clear of the Ibrox team with one less match to get through. Having been taken to extra-time in gruelling conditions at St Mirren on Sunday but found enough to win 1-0 in the SFA Youth Cup semi-finals, this was a big test for Durie’s men. They came through it with flying colours and after taking an early lead in Dumbarton, they took advantage of defensive errors in ruthless fashion to come out on top. Durie made four changes to the side which won in Paisley as Ross Perry, Ryan Finnie, Kristian Gibson and Danny Stoney all came in. There should have been a fifth alteration too but Scott Gallacher pulled up in the warm up and that meant Liam Kelly continued in goal. It had been a real struggle to break Saints down at the weekend and it had taken until the stroke of half-time in the additional half hour to make a breakthrough. Here there were no such problems and Gallagher opened the scoring with less than four minutes on the clock, albeit it in fortunate circumstances. There seemed to be no great danger as Ryan Sinnamon crossed from the right and away keeper Marc Waters looked set to gather. But he then had a moment to forget which was reminiscent of Gilles Rousset in the 1996 Scottish Cup final and he spilled to the grateful Gallagher, who poked in on the line. Thistle tried to hit back and Declan McDaid found himself in on goal but Sinnamon got a crucial touch on his shot to deflect it over. Simon Colina and Lee Gallacher then combined on the left to set up Jordan Leyden but his drive was lazy and it flew just over and wide. Back came Rangers, with Charlie Telfer’s corner finding Luca Gasparotto and he nodded back across goal to Gallagher, who steered just wide. Midway through the first half, that trio would be more profitable as they teamed up once again to double the advantage. Once more Telfer swung a corner in, Gasparotto got up highest to make contact and he set up Gallagher who headed in from four yards. Partick again responded well and Kelly was tested by a long-range drive from Dave Wilson as he tipped away from his goal and held at the second attempt. That ensured it was still 2-0 at the break but soon after the restart it was three, with Gallagher making sure of the match ball. He had already been played in and pulled wide when Telfer sent another set piece into the area and Gasparotto met it. The big Canadian was so unlucky as his header crashed off the face of the bar but it fell to Gallagher on the line and he bundled over. That brought his tally for the season to 10 at under-20 level and drew him level with leading scorer Danny Stoney. Gallagher could have had a fourth before he was withdrawn as Stoney fed him following a poor clearance from Waters but he pulled wide and that was his last contribution of note. Dykes nearly put a corner in from the left and Waters had to paw it away to make sure he wasn’t embarrassed again. Craig Halkett then hit the target and would surely have scored were it not for his own man – second replacement Jamie Burrows – getting in the way of his effort. Another fresh face – Darren Ramsay – saw his strike clawed to the side but there was to be a fourth and final Gers goal. That came from Dykes as he slammed home his ninth strike of the campaign five minutes from the end after he was set up by Burrows.
