U20: Motherwell 1-2 Rangers

RYAN SINNAMON’S late goal sent Rangers to the top of the SPFL Under-20 League with two games to go and eliminated Hibernian from a thrilling title race.

The full-back struck nine minutes from the end against Motherwell to give Gordon Durie’s 10 men a terrific 2-1 victory at Fir Park despite Chris Hegarty’s second yellow card.

After Calum Gallagher had broken the deadlock, the victory rounded off an excellent April for the Light Blues which has them firmly in control of the championship at this late stage.

Gers arrived in Lanarkshire knowing a success there would take them past Hibs, who completed their schedule this afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Kilmarnock.

With this result, Durie’s kids have also moved five points ahead of Celtic having played once more than them.

The pressure therefore shifts to the Parkhead side ahead of its trip to St Mirren tomorrow and if it fails to win in Paisley, Rangers could become champions at Falkirk on Friday.

The Murray Park youngsters have a game there and a derby with Celtic next week to fulfil and they’re in a great position with just 180 minutes of the league season left.

As has been the case so often in 2013/14, this victory was one earned through determination, grit and a sheer will to win.

But the first half was a frustrating one for Rangers as they dominated much it, took a lead then gave it away again.

Durie’s men started brightly as they pressed from the first whistle and created a number of opportunities before finally going in front.

Darren Ramsay shot wide from 25 yards, Hegarty put a corner just past with a header and Robbie Crawford hit the target but found his attempt was too weak.

Lee Erwin hit back for the hosts and his good turn of pace took him to the edge of the area before Liam Kelly reacted well to stop his low drive on the line.

The keeper was called into action again moments later as he got down to stop a Chris Cadden attempt from sneaking in after it deflected off Sinnamon.

Gers responded well and with their next attack, midway through the opening period, they took a deserved lead as they began enjoying good pressure again.

Gallagher was the scorer with his 11th under-20 goal of the campaign and it was an excellent finish from the forward.

Crawford crossed to the hitman and he got up above his marker superbly to steer home a soaring header beyond Ross Stewart in the home goal.

Rangers were clearly hungry to build on their advantage and had a number of good chances to do that.

Gallagher was slipped in again by Crawford but couldn’t capitalise then it took two defenders teaming up to keep him out before he headed over.

He also got an unlikely touch on a lob past Stewart which dropped just the wrong side of the post and the more openings Gers spurned, the more you wondered if that would prove costly.

The kept pressing and Ramsay, just as he had in the first few minutes, pulled a grasscutter from outside the area wide of the near stick.

This time the Light Blues were to pay as Motherwell came upfield and got back on level terms, much to Durie’s annoyance.

Hegarty was ruled to have pushed Erwin in the box and referee David Lowe pointed to the penalty spot.

Erwin himself stepped up to take the kick and although Kelly got a strong hand on his drive as he guessed the right way, it wasn’t strong enough and the net rustled to make it 1-1.

That meant Rangers effectively started again after the restart, with all their good work counting for less than it should have.

Kelly did well to keep Erwin out on the line and a third Ramsay long-ranger was held as play swung from end to end in a really open contest.

Charlie Telfer saw his 30-yarder take a touch to help it away for a corner when it nearer went in and Hegarty tried to make amends for his earlier error with a header but couldn’t.

Jamie Burrows was introduced and after goals in each of his last two games, he nearly kept up that ratio with a third.

But having been played in on goal, he was denied a near-instant impact after replacing Dylan Dykes as his shot cannon off the post and into the grateful Stewart’s arms.

Rangers seemed to be getting close and Ramsay jinked in from the left, getting the ball on to his left foot and drilling across the face and just past.

Erwin caught sight of the target as Motherwell managed to get out of their half but he couldn’t make the most of the rare foray upfield and did the same thing.

Gers were certainly the more assertive team and they continued to pour forward, with Andy Murdoch next to have a go but he couldn’t force over the line.

Neither could Telfer from a similar range and a failure to regain the lead looked like it might come back to haunt the visitors as they were reduced to 10 men when Hegarty saw red.

Undeterred, they kept applying pressure and Danny Stoney’s bursting run nearly got him through on the keeper but he was stopped in his tracks just outside the area.

And then, finally, the Light Blues got the winner their perseverance merited as they made it 2-1 just nine minutes from the end.

Sinnamon’s finish was excellent as he lifted across Stewart and into the net after being played in by a perfect defence-splitting pass from Telfer.

That set up a nervy finish for Durie’s kids and more than three minutes of injury time passed before Lowe finally called it a day.

Rangers were thrilled to hear his whistle and now they’ve a huge match to look ahead to at Westfield three days from now as the silverware comes into sight.
