Scottish League Cup: Date for Celtic v Rangers could be switched because of TV demands.

Revived Old Firm derby could be moved from the weekend of Jan 31-Feb 1 to meet BBC Scotland's requirements for the cup semi-finals

The meeting of Celtic and Rangers in the Scottish League Cup could be switched from the original weekend dates set aside for the tournament semi-finals, Telegraph Sport has learned. The dates specified beforehand were Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1.

However, the matter is complicated by the fact that BBC Scotland has the right to screen one semi-final and an option on the other and it is understood that the broadcaster is not keen to have both ties played on adjacent days. To add to the allure of the semi-finals, they feature an Old Firm derby for the first time since Rangers were in the old Scottish Premier League in 2012 and also the meeting of Aberdeen and Dundee United – dubbed the New Firm in the 1980s because of their domination of Scottish football under Alex Ferguson and Jim McLean.

Given that Aberdeen and United fans will have to travel to a neutral venue, if Hampden is chosen for their match it would be plainly more convenient for their supporters to make the journey on a Saturday or Sunday. Of the other most likely neutral venues – Easter Road, Dens Park and Tynecastle – only Hearts’ ground is scheduled to be free on January 31.

The matter is still to be finalised but one possibility which emerged – and which is favoured by the fact that Celtic and Rangers play in the same city – is a midweek Hampden fixture either in the last week of January or the first week of February.

To add to the nuances of the draw, Aberdeen and Dundee United were scheduled to meet in a Scottish Premiership match at Pittodrie on January 31, which has now been postponed, as has Celtic’s home meeting with Kilmarnock and Rangers’ Championship visit to Livingston.

Well, I cannot imagine it being favoured by the Police. FFS, a day's drinking on top of all the tension and hatred....

Police Scotland will want a midweek fixture, folks rushing to the game from work means less drinking time. Further, a beginning of February downpour of rain/sleet will also be welcomed, supporters keen to be off the street and into shelter.

Oh, and the Lord Advocat will be in attendance. I wonder if Frank will be replete in balaclava, playing the part of Green Brigade foot soldier; or will he sit with Peter and the rest of ra Sellik Board? We should be told.

Those with jobs coud take a half day's flexi or leave, or a full day. Or leave early. Far more over drinking on a Wednesday at 8 than a Sunday at 1, I'd have thought.

William Hill made Celtic 1/5 to qualify for the final with Rangers 10/3.

I'm having a punt on us, purely emotionally - but I also think 100/30 is decent value. Celtic aren't as good as they, their compliant media or their fans think they are.
