U20: Rangers 4 - 0 Spartans

RANGERS youth side started their defence of the SFA Youth Cup in impressive style at Ibrox – the youngsters netted four against a startled Spartans side.

A strike from Ryan Sinnamon, a Daniel Stoney penalty and a brace from Ryan Hardie made it 4-0 on the night.

Gordon Durie’s side are determined to keep hold of the trophy they won, when they beat Hearts on penalties, last season.

The Gers young guns shone the brightest on Bonfire Night, as they eased passed Edinburgh outfit Spartans after opening the scoring early on.

With just ten minutes on the clock Rangers mustered up the first attempt of the game and it ended in a goal. Ryan Hardie made room for himself on the left and cut a ball back from the by-line. He floated a cross to the back post and it was met by the onrushing Sinnamon who arrived in perfect time to slot the ball home beyond a helpless Brian Carswell.

A couple of minutes later Daniel Stoney began to turn the burners on as he rushed down the left channel. The forward, who’s currently on loan to Stranraer, sorted his feet out quickly to have a shot from close range - only to find his effort smothered by the Spartans keeper at his feet.

Junior Ogen has impressed since securing a place in the U20s starting 11. On 16 minutes he received a threaded ball through the middle and his speed took him away from his man, but his shot was straight at Carswell and was easily saved.

Rangers were applying the pressure to a startled Spartans and with 19 minutes on the clock Hardie showed his class, as he has done time after time this season. The striker twirled away from his defenders on the edge of the box in spectacular style to eventually free himself of markers. The young forward finished over the keeper in calm fashion after leaving the Spartans backline in his wake to make it 2-0.

Just three minutes later Sinnamon broke into the Spartans box and was brought down for a penalty. Daniel Stoney stepped up to take the spot kick and dispatched the ball down the left of Carswell and into the bottom left corner.

Ogen deserved a first half goal after a series of chances went close, first a volley from 20 yards out was held by the keeper - and then he got his head to a cross swung in from the right, only to see it saved at close range.

With forty minutes on the clock Spartans had their first shot of the game. Scott McGrory-Irving found space in Gers box after a ball found its way in from the right wing. He got a toe to the ball and poked a shot towards Liam Kelly, who gathered the ball down to his right.

With ten minutes of the second half played Andy Murdoch floated a ball down the right channel to reach Hardie. The 17-year old took one touch and lifted the ball over Carswell on the angle to give him his second of the game and Rangers fourth.

With the game at 4-0 both teams failed to create many efforts during the final half hour of the game. Tom Walsh had an effort from the edge of the area that looked to trouble the Spartans stopper. Then Spartans sprung into action, Blair Atkinson stormed forward and combined well with George Hunter. Hunter though couldn’t keep the ball on his toes and only mustered a weak shot.

With 78 minutes played Hunter had a chance to make amends with, probably, the best chance of the game for the away side. A ball was played into his feet as Spartans rushed in the Gers box in numbers. Hunter let the ball come across his body and let fly with a shot on the angel but saw it soar over Kelly’s cross bar.

Walsh forced an impressive save from Carswell with five minutes of the game remaining, the stopper having the tip his effort over and round off a busy evening for the Spartans keeper.

RANGERS: Kelly, Sinnamon, Ross McCrorie, Pascazio, Gasparotto, Gibson, Ogen (Wilson 66”), Murdoch, Hardie (Jefferies 87”), Stoney (Jamieson 87”), Walsh

SUBS NOT USED: Robby McCrorie, Brownlie

GOALS: Sinnamon 10”, Hardie 19” & 56”, Stoney 24”

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Only just saw this. Thanks for the notice though. My fault I didn't see it till now. Confuses the hell of me to see the likes of Luca G playing for us again and then in Airdrie's team at the weekend.
