Rangers: Jon Daly urges team-mates to help manager out

Rangers striker Jon Daly insists the players must raise their game to ease the pressure on manager Ally McCoist.

 

The Ibrox outfit lost 2-0 to Hearts at the weekend, leaving them nine points behind the Tynecastle side in the Championship title race.

 

McCoist received flak from some Rangers fans during the game and Daly said: "The players must take responsibility, once we cross the white line there's nothing the manager can do.

 

"It's up to us to get results."

 

The abuse aimed at McCoist was heard when he took off midfielder Lewis Macleod in the 80th minute, with Rangers 1-0 down, although the chants were quickly drowned out by support for the Ibrox boss.

 

Hearts had taken the lead through Jamie Holt's strike, after Steven Smith was sent off for Rangers in 21 minutes for a reckless challenge on Callum Paterson.

Jamie Walker sealed the win with a late penalty to leave the league leaders in a strong position to secure the title.

 

And Daly reckons the Rangers players need to step up as they look to close the gap on the Tynecastle side.

 

"The manager can't do anything about the sending-off, it's something you have to adapt to," the Irishman added.

 

"It's up to the players to make sure we win games for him and at the moment we are not doing that."

 

Hearts remain unbeaten in the league but Daly retains hope that they can be caught.

 

"It's going to be tough, no doubt about it," he added. "That's nine points and we only have two games against Hearts left, so it's out of our hands.

 

"It's Hearts' to lose but we need to concentrate on ourselves. We have lost points we shouldn't have and we need to make sure that stops.

 

"But I think there's still plenty of twists and turns to come and we need to try and close that gap as soon as possible. Hopefully if we do that they will feel a bit of pressure and drop a few points."

Well, Daly says the right words with regards to "players having a responsibility to perform". Look at the Alloa game and what happened on the park at times was abyssmal. And one cannot primarily blame McCoist for that. These chaps are professionals and have to do a job, full stop. Yet, it is very much McCoist's decision who he plays and where. Far too often he made the wrong tactical selections and sub decisions to be beyond criticism. Yet, I do not expect a player to say that in the media.

What's not to like. Come in a couple of times a week, for a wee jog around the field, laugh at Ally and Durranty's banter, have some lunch and go off to the bookies or the golf course!

Too many of the players lost their discipline at Tynecastle and this reflects badly on the manager.

 

One after another senior player, they gave the referee an opportunity to send them off.

Whole thing is a mess on and off the park.

 

And someone like Lewis McLeod is also allowing his performances to dip badly.

 

I think the lad is a decent player, but I have never bought into the hype around him. His control and passing has been dire for a while now. Yes, he is surrounded by poor players, but the lad is not progresing at all. He has talent - but is not using it. It doesn't help when the manager is playing him out of position - but still no excuse for his poor ball control and distribution. He should be better than that. And let's not start on the - 'he's still young' nonsense. The lad Roberston at Hull is the same age and he's grabbing the bull by the horns. McCleod really needs to step up his game. He was largely anonymous on Saturday.

 

As for Lee Wallace, he has no incentive to play well. He has been getting away with poor performances for ages now, but knows he will always get a game. Same goes for as Black, Law, McCulloch.

 

Whichever way you look at things, the whole place stinks of failure.

How many times over the years have we heard "we must do better", then it fails to happen. Less of the talk & more action required. Spend more time on the training ground. More time analysing why the team isn't performing. Show the fans why you are all worth your wages, and why its worthwhile the fans paying out their money - that they work damned hard for - in order to see you lot play a decent standard of football.

I would urge Daly to help his manager by going for the ball rather than the man when crosses come in. If you're not going to win the ball, Jon, work out where the defender has to be to get it and make sure you're there first. That way you still won't win the ball but you might get the foul in your favour instead of the other way round which happened endlessly on Saturday.
