Does anybody know how many other candidates were considered? Asking for a friend.

I think a lot of us would like to know the answer to this.

Even if Somers isn't telling porkies and they did actually interview other candidates, it was always a stick-on certainty that Llambias would be appointed.

IMHO, part of Ashley's dealings could well be down to finally giving his ego some silverware, a bit like SDM. He can get SD money from both Rangers and Newcastle without "owning" both clubs, he can reasonably only get silverware and probably some Euro fame* via us though. Whether that is what he is looking for is anyone's guess, but I still deem it as plausible as any other theory whipped up about him thus far.

@ Hildy ... the rumour is (FF et al) that Billy Davies is essentially a done deal. At this moment and time a 2 year deal to get us back to the top does not really need a "high calibre" chap who'd cost much money. And in any case, if we have 500 members on here who'd have to decide on a high calibre name, we'd come up with roughly 475 first choice candidates.

*I speak about him, not exactly SD.

EDIT: Regarding Llambias, that's the second time such an announcement gives monetary information, even though not as exact as they did with McCoist.

Ashley has shown with Newcastle that all he wants to do is finish mid table in the league. He doesn't want the threat of relegation as this would bring pressure on the club to buy players in the January window instead of selling the in demand ones. He doesn't, quite wisely, want to bankroll any attempt on cracking the top four for the financial rewards of the CL, but neither does he want Newcastle to finish high enough to qualify for the EL as it is a distraction for the league. The two domestic cups on offer are treated with the same disdain, and for the exact same reasons.

In short, Mike Ashley doesn't give two fucks about trophies, Newcastle United or Rangers.

The Llambias salary information is extremely limited as the idea of what 'substantial' means is wholly subjective. Nice try, though.

The thing about this is it must be clear to everyone he can only do this for a limited amount of time.

Every season we finish without at least challenging for the title will erode the fan base and as a result there'll be a decrease in attendance and merchandise sales. Our TV and potential prize money is nothing compared to Newcastle's, so no significant income there. Can slapping his advertising on an empty stadium with a team of also-rans on the park, playing in a league no-one give's a shit about, really be beneficial for SD? The flow of cash into the club and through the brand will eventually dry up the way he's running things, because it depends on support - I honestly can't figure out what he has to gain beyond a relatively short-term leaching exercise.

He will be aware that, with promotion, enough gullible people will willingly hand over their cash to watch games involving the cream of Scottish football (ahem) and that the expenditure needed to win in Scotland is not at the same level as over the border. If it is a short-term thing, he will get out when he so desires. He may, however, surprise us all and start pumping in SD profits in his personal quest to reach the pinnacle of European football.

Ashley interested in silverware? LOL!

I see panto season has reached Berlin.

The only silver he's interested in is the stuff that jangles in his pockets.

Well, not unexpected a reply. Whatever panto season means, it does not sound respectful. There are enough singing from one hymnsheet already, it does not mean that there isn't a second pages as well. Nonetheless ...

He lines his pockets with our and the Magpies money already. What more can he get than a few hundred k or even the odd million then? What would be his incentive with us? What percentage of turnover would Rangers be to him and SD?

Keeping us on life-feed and expect the legions swarm back and buy all his stuff and watch another season of this dire fare? There is no EPL or Sky paying for the upkeep of Ibrox, the staff and all that is connected to the club. The more he loans, the less buyers will line up to snatch us from him in days to come. Even as it stands now, people stay away from Ibrox and soon enough less people will by his merchandise. If silver in his pockets is the only stuff he's interested in, he's already full to the hilt with it. Would the odd million calm his ego even more? If that is the case in your opinion, why do you doubt that his ego is not looking for more?

bit' schoen.

As for Ashley, it's very, very simple.

He's a money maker. Its what he does; it's his raison d'etre.

If he was going to stop when he made enough, he'd have stopped after his first billion. He hasn't and he won't because he can't.

He's not a Rangers fan. He's interested in owning us to make money from us.

He does not have our best interests at heart; he has his own best interests at heart.

He is therefore not the right person to own the club.

Simples.

Forlanssister has previously explained what Ashley gets out of Rangers, and it's not a few hundred thousand. I'm sure that he will gladly put you right when he sees your post.

See, I'm not saying that he is not here for making money. But it would surprise me not if he's also here to add something to his ego that he could not and most likely will not do with the Magpies.

@Rangersitis ... I read that stuff from FS, interesting as it was. Once I see that in figures on an SD balance sheet et al and not as a theory on a fan board, I might be convinced. No disrespect to FS whatsoever. Meanwhile, I'm still of the opinion that Ashley and SD are hardly satisfied by the way their Rangers business is going on.
