Old Firm clash songs: What Celtic and Rangers fans are banned from singing

Recommended Posts

The Famine Song

A chant which gloats about the Irish Famine of the 1840s. Proscribed as not only sectarian but also racist since it contains the lyrics “Why Don’t You Go Home?”

What is sectarian about

Why don't you go home, why don't you go home, the famines over, why don't you go home?
Can anyone point out a sectarian reference in it?

As for racist, it's being sung to and about Scots who pretend their Irish. is it therefore racist against Scots?

It's satire, and as the Government's own website says, the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012 "will not criminalise jokes and satire about religion or non-religious belief."

Ps

Could we please just change ****** to peado and get on with singing The Billy Boys

Personally I'd prefer us to drop all references to peado. It's not a subject that should be treated with any amount of celebration and those who sing it end up looking bad to anyone else.

It does us and the club no credit.

There's absolutely no way to stop fans with a good drink in them taunting that lot with paedo or kiddy fiddling remarks BD, but you're right that it doesn't reflect well on us (or the Club) to be singing or chanting about it.
