der Berliner 3,219 Posted February 4, 2015 Share Posted February 4, 2015 (edited) U20: Rangers 5-1 Hearts Calum Gallagher - who is just coming back from an injury sustained whilst on loan at Cowdenbeath - getting a shot away from distance that was parried wide for a corner by Jack Hamilton in goal. A little more communication would have stopped people from asking why Gallacher wasn't even on the bench after his return ... Given the experience in the Hearts team, you do wonder whether theline-uo used by the u20, bolstered with half a handful first teamers (Clark, McGregor, Wallace) would be good enough to beat Raith or Livingston. ian1964 10,386 Posted February 4, 2015 Share Posted February 4, 2015 RANGERS under-20 side took on a strong Hearts at Murray Park yesterday in a highly entertaining game in the Development League. The Gers were in fine form and came from a goal behind and missing a penalty in the early stages to romp to victory in a confident performance thanks to goals from Marius Zaliukas, David Templeton, Ryan Hardie and a brace from Tom Walsh. Hearts lined up with a very strong side for the match, with seven players within their starting eleven who are members of their first team squad. Jack Hamilton, Brad McKay, Jordan McGhee, Scott Robinson, Sam Nicholson, Soufian El Hassnaoui and Billy King have 90 appearances for the Championship leaders between them this season. Rangers started with three first team players, Lee Robinson, Marius Zaliukas and David Templeton with the rest a composition of youth players who have been playing regularly for the 20s side and who have been out on loan for experience in the first part of the season. The match started at a frenetic pace from both sides and it was to stay that way throughout a first half that would see five goals and three penalties, one of which was missed. The Gers started brightly with Calum Gallagher - who is just coming back from an injury sustained whilst on loan at Cowdenbeath - getting a shot away from distance that was parried wide for a corner by Jack Hamilton in goal. From the resultant corner, Andy Murdoch was next to test the Hearts goalkeeper with a shot from distance, but the keeper did well to stop the danger. Murdoch tested the keeper again following a poor pass from the Hearts defence with Crawford spreading it wide to the young midfielder whose shot was saved again by the keeper. However in the eleventh minute, Hearts were to take a lead against the run of play from the penalty spot after King had been brought down inside the box. McKay stepped up to take the spot kick and gave Robinson no chance with a cool finish. Rangers would then create a couple of chances, with the best coming as Robbie Crawford's header was sent over the bar, before the referee pointed to the spot after Gallagher was brought down. The youngster stepped up to take the spot kick himself, however he didn't get a lot of pace on his effort and Hamilton was able to palm wide from twelve yards. Templeton was very influential in the opening stages of the game and will have been pleased with his contribution throughout the match. On the 24th minute, he showed excellent feet whilst running at the defence, only for a shot to be deflected wide. He wasn't deterred and on the 27th minute he cut inside from the left and unleashed a fantastic shot into the top corner that gave the keeper no chance. A few minutes later the Gers were in front as former Hearts captain Zaliukas - who was back with the development team trying to build up match fitness - rose at the back post to head beyond Hamilton from close range from a Murdoch cross. Gallagher was a thorn in the side of the Hearts defence all afternoon and he was brought down inside the box yet again in the 38th minute. After Gallagher had missed earlier in the match, Tom Walsh stepped up to take the second Gers spot kick and coolly passed beyond the keeper to make it 3-1. Just before the break, Walsh turned provider after some neat work on the left crossing to the near post for Hardie who managed to bundle the ball beyond the keeper and to give the Gers a comfortable 4-1 lead at the break. The second half started brightly for the Gers, with Gallagher testing the keeper from close range, but Hamilton was up to the test and blocked the shot from close range allowing the defence to clear the danger. Attacking full back Ryan Sinnamon had to be replaced by Darren Ramsay in the second period after a tackle with a Hearts player that resulted in a burst lip and some stitches. Further second half substitutions from the Gers saw Greg Pascazio and Junior Ogen come on for a period of the game, but with the Gers leading comfortably the pace had dipped from the first half. The result was sealed as Tom Walsh scored his second goal of the game following a free kick conceded by Hearts on the right of their defence. Walsh curled a low drive across the six yard box that might have taken a slight deflection off a Hearts player before finishing up in the back of the net. There were more chances in the closing stages for the Gers for Hardie and Gallagher from the edge of the box, but in the end the Gers ran out comfortable winners 5-1.
