Ladbrokes to sponsor SPFL

EXCLUSIVE: Scottish football SLAMMED for sponsorship 'deal with the devil'

SPFL chiefs have been accused of selling their souls to the devil by unveiling a major betting company as their main sponsor.

Ladbrokes will hold title rights across all four leagues and 42 clubs for the next two seasons in a deal worth around £4million.

Former Hearts, Motherwell and St Johnstone midfielder Kevin Twaddle lost more than £1m because of a betting addiction that drove him to the brink of suicide.

He hit rock-bottom after squandering his wages in the bookies but now helps people trying to fight the addiction through Gamblers Anonymous and PFA Scotland.

Even though SPFL players are prohibited from placing football bets, Twaddle insists gambling is rife in the Scottish game. He sees things getting worse with the high-profile partnerships with Ladbrokes and William Hill, who sponsor the Scottish Cup.

He said: “What message does that send out, not only to people in the game but also the general public?

“The governing bodies have sold their soul to the devil. It is morally wrong.

“It beggars belief. I have been involved in football and seen the damage betting is doing to the game.”

Betting scandals have hit the headlines in Scottish football.

Last month Dundee midfielder Paul McGowan avoided a prison sentence after blaming his bad behaviour on a gambling addiction.

Partick Thistle winger Steven Lawless is facing SFA action over an alleged breach of betting regulations, which would make him the fourth player in Scottish football to be charged over the rules on gambling.

Rangers midfielder Ian Black landed a three-match ban for charges including betting against his own side, while Ibrox goalie Steve Simonsen was suspended for one game.

Dunfermline striker Michael Moffat was found guilty when he was at Ayr. He was handed a six-match suspension, reduced to four games on appeal.

Twaddle added: “Gambling within the Scottish game is rife. It is worse than it has ever been and will continue to get worse until the problems are actually addressed.

“Paul McGowan is only the tip of the iceberg. There are even bigger name players in Scotland who have a problem and it goes all the way to the young boys who aren’t even near the first team.

“There are so many players in the game struggling. Now, wherever they turn, they’ll see Ladbrokes and William Hill. That makes it a lot harder to stop gambling.”
