Rob Kiernan - Bid Accepted

Recommended Posts

There are plenty of International players in the English First Division, 5/6 in the Scottish Squad. When Warburton talks about value I reckon he is looking for young players in International U20s etc. who could make the full International team, which would enhance their transfer value.

I have to admit I am rather excited by signing this type of player. It also seems that he wants to come up and play for Warburton.

We all moan about not buying players with sell on potential - well this type of signing definitely has. If he can improve and force himself into the ROI squad at some point down the line we will be laughing.

I think, in general, the fans will be under-whelmed at most of the summer signings.

We shouldn't need to go for big names....it's about how good a TEAM, they all make up on the park. Big name signings come with a heavy cost, with no guarantee of success.....unknowns have considerably lower costs & therefore lower expectations. The may result in less pressure and allow them to play their own game.

Not all signings from lower english leagues are poor players....

Over the last three years we've largely went with big name signings (relatively speaking) and they've pretty much all let us down. No-one can say that Boyd, Miller, Black, Daly, Shiels, Bell, Law and Templeton have done well enough given the outlay and their supposed quality (relatively speaking) reputation.

Of course we've also signed lesser known players (such as Faure, Mohsni and Argyriou) who've hardly been successes either so there's certainly a lot of pressure on the new regime to supply capable players; no matter their background and cost.

Ultimately every signing is a risk and it's up to the manager to minimise that via good coaching and tactics.

I'm excited about the new season ahead but i am very concerned about where the money is coming from. Even if we bring in £12m from season ticket sales (which we won't) that will barely fund the club never mind signings and wages.

Are Dave King and the other investors happy to fund us for the time-being? Or will it be other loans because anything that has been put in recently has been described as a loan not an investment with it being a loan it implies they will want it back in some form or another be that in shares or the money

Repayment via shares would not be a problem to most of us. Ok it dilutes our shares ?

Rangers new boy Rob Kiernan angered by claims he failed medical on proposed move to Birmingham before switch to Ibrox

KIERNAN will be unveiled at Mark Warburton's first signing for Gers later today but is fuming at claims from Brum.

ROB KIERNAN pulled the plug on a move to Birmingham City at the 11th hour to pave the way for a reunion with mentor Mark Warburton at Rangers .

Wigan defender Kiernan is set to become Warburton’s first signing today after travelling to Glasgow last night to begin thrashing out the terms of his contract.

But the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 captain has been angered by claims in the Midlands that his proposed move to St Andrews collapsed because of concerns which were flagged up by doctors during his medical.

Instead, the player’s camp are adamant it was the 24-year-old who backed out of the deal after learning that Warburton, his former youth coach at Watford, wanted to take him to Ibrox.

One source close to the deal said: “Birmingham are obviously trying to cover their back here.

“But the truth is it was Rob who pulled the plug on the move, not the other way around.

“Once he knew that Warburton had got the Rangers job his mind was made up.”

All the latest news from Ibrox

Record Sport understands Warburton wants Kiernan and former Hearts skipper Danny Wilson to form the defensive heart of a new look starting X1 and hopes to have both players tied up before the end of

this week.

Kiernan spent the last half of last season on loan at Birmingham.

He played 12 games and had been expected to complete a more permanent move this week after agreeing a two-year contract.

But Kiernan has opted instead to sign up for Warburton’s revolution after spending most of

his career bouncing around clubs in England’s lower leagues.

He grew up playing under Warburton for Watford’s development squad and the pair joined forces briefly again in 2012 when Kiernan joined Brentford on loan for two months in League One.

He also played four games in Scotland’s top flight during a loan stint at Kilmarnock in 2010.

He made his debut for the Ayrshire men in a 1-0 Rugby Park win over Celtic on the night Robbie Keane pulled on the hoops for the first time.

I actually think that Faure & Argyriou were alright - certainly not failures. Faure especially - he had a number of good games when played @ CB....RB was not his favoured position.

Rangers new boy Rob Kiernan will give his all, says his former Ireland boss Noel King

NOEL KING handed Rob Kiernan 14 caps for Republic of Ireland U21s and has backed the centre back to be a huge success at Ibrox.

RANGERS fans never knew what to expect from one minute to the next with bombscare Bilel Mohsni.

But they’ll know exactly what they are going to get every time new
central defender Rob Kiernan steps on to the pitch.

And the Light Blue legions don’t have anything to worry about if his former Republic of Ireland Under-21 gaffer’s verdict is anything to go by.

Noel King handed Kiernan his 14 international caps at that level and is delighted to see him land a move
to Ibrox.

He admitted Kiernan was prone to the odd mistake in his younger days but has seen him mature into a
top-class defender in recent years.

Totally committed and honest is how King, who made Kiernan his Under-21 captain, described him. In short,
everything Mohsni wasn’t.

Kiernan is also described as
wholehearted and combative but, unlike Mohsni, he knows how to channel it the right way.

And now that the French-Tunisian hothead, who imploded on the final day of the season, has left Glasgow the incoming Kiernan could sum up the difference in what can be expected under Mark Warburton.

The former Brentford gaffer worked with the 24-year-old defender during a loan spell at Griffin Park and King is convinced Watford-born Kiernan will be a success at Ibrox.

King, who had two games as interim Republic of Ireland boss following the resignation of Giovanni Trapattoni, told Record Sport: “Every time Rob joined up with us I knew what I was getting.

“That is the best way I can sum him up. He’s combative, honest, gets stuck in. He’s such a committed boy. He was also captain on a couple of occasions and that armband isn’t dished out lightly.

“He’s a good player to have around and great in the dressing room. The fans will instantly respect his commitment. You can never be 100 per cent certain someone will be a success but I had every faith in him.

“I watched him twice for Wigan last season, at centre-back, and he did fine. He’s getting bigger, stronger and better and that can only be good for Rangers.

“Warburton has worked with him and that is key. He must be comfortable with what he has seen.”

Kiernan started out at Watford and spent three years in the senior ranks before moving to Wigan but has had nine loan spells in his career with his latest at Birmingham.

His first stint away from Vicarage Road was at Kilmarnock where his debut for Jimmy Calderwood’s side saw him come on as a late sub in a 1-0 win over Celtic in Robbie Keane’s first match for the Hoops.

Kiernan joked in a recent interview: “The boys mock me, saying I’ve had more loans than Halifax! But for me it was about playing regular football.

“I never wanted to sit on the
bench or in the stands. I’ve had
loans at different leagues and all over the country but it has been good
for me.”

King agrees the defender has gained plenty of experience but hopes Rangers can give him some stability.

He said: “Rob needed the first-team games he had
out on loan.

“He’s ready now to be the leading light. This can be his time. He’s a maturing man and I don’t have any doubt he has what it takes to handle life at a club the size of Rangers.

“In the position he plays it’s not often you see 19 or 21-year-olds establishing themselves. It’s a key role and that’s why his time is now to be a regular starter.

“You can see the development in him because there are few young central defenders who don’t make mistakes and he has gone through that learning
experience.

“I’ve known Rob since he was a young boy. He’s very committed, in great
physical shape and serious about his game. He is an aggressive defender.

“I wouldn’t want to be disrespectful to the standard of the Scottish
Championship but I’d certainly think he’d be able to cope with that.

“He is a solid English Championship defender so you can judge for yourself if he’d be able to handle this level.

“This is a great career move for him. He’s honest, sincere and committed in the tackle. He could be a bit rash but he has improved in that aspect in the last couple of years.

“He has played a lot of games, albeit down the leagues, and I’m sure he’ll acquit himself well at Ibrox. The fact Warburton has worked with him suggests he knows what he’s getting.

“You never know with players – every time you sign someone your fingers are crossed – but I am sure this will be a success. I brought him into the Under-21 squad when he was at Watford.

“I went to see him playing and was impressed right away. Shane Duffy, formerly of Everton, and John Egan, who was at Sunderland as a kid, were his central defensive rivals in the Ireland Under-21 squad.

“At Under-21 level we had to look at guys who were on the fringes because it’s not often – although James McCarthy was an exception – you have youngsters in the first team in the English Premiership.

“I found Rob a very good fella. He was a terrific competitor who gave everything and at times he was so committed he was prone to the odd mistake because you can misjudge tackles when you have that
wholehearted attitude.

“He’s a sincere boy and would do anything asked of him. He got 14 caps for the Ireland Under-21 team and I didn’t give away caps lightly.

“At times he would be
exceptional and sometimes he wouldn’t get up to that level and would be prone to a mistake, as all young
boys are.

“But I knew the more first team games he played – as he has been doing with Wigan and Birmingham – he would improve and that’s how it has worked out for him, resulting in this big move to Rangers.”

I didn't mind Faure either but the fact he struggled to make himself a first pick speaks volumes. Argyriou perhaps didn't get enough of a chance either but whenever he played his distribution was awful.

As an aside, apparently James Tavernier, a team-mate of Kiernan's at Wigan, has been rumoured with a move to us as well and he's a right back.
