Scottish Teams in Europe 2015-16

Recommended Posts

Farcical as it is, for some teams the Qualification games start before teams have hardly kicked a pre-season (sic!) ball:

Champions League- Qualifikation, 2nd round:

Hooped Horrors v Stjarnan (Island) 14./15. July

Stjarnan v Hooped Horrors 21./22. July

Europa League- Qualifikation, 1st round

Alashkert (Armenien) v St Johnstone 2. July

St Johnstone v Alashkert 9. July

KF Shkendija (Mazedonien) v Aberdeen 2. July

Aberdeen v KF Shkendija 9. July

Europa League- Qualifikation, 2nd round

Inverness Caledonian Thistle v Astra Giurgiu (Rumänien) 16. July

Astra v Inverness Caledonian Thistle 23. July

FK Crvena Zvezda (Serbien)/FC Kairat Almaty (Kasachstan) v Alashkert / St Johnstone FC (16./23.July.)

St Johnstone face playing in front of half empty stadium

St Johnstone could be playing in front of a near empty stadium when they face Armenian minnows Alashkert next week.

It emerged that the tie is being moved to the 14,500-capacity Republican Stadium in the capital, Yerevan.

The prospect of a 6000-mile round trip has counted out many Perth fans from making the journey to back their side.

And the attendance in a country where the national sport is chess could be around the 500 to 600 mark. (Courier)

Anyway, this bizarre setup has been in operation for a good few years now and given the Scottish winter weather, it would be interesting to check out whether "summer" football is an alternative. While I know that quite a few will disagree given tradition and all that, it would e.g. be an interesting option for the TV companies, who usually have a barren summer to cover with MLS stuff and the like. WCs and European Championships may be an obstacle too, but one can check how Sweden et al circumvent that. On the other hand, all the late autumn / winter / early spring internationals would not stop the match day schedule. To make sure that there is some if not much action in the off-season, one might throw in a Challenge / League Cup with home & away games, as well as the SFA Cup. While those who have qualified could concentrate on Europe.

Europa League - Qualification

Alashkert FC 1 St.Johnstone 0 (Manasyan 59.)

Shkendija 79 1 Aberdeen 1 (Kirovski 84 / McGinn 79)

Apart from that ...

Cork 1 Knattspyrnufelag Reykjavik 1

Glenavo 1 Shakhter Soligorsk 2

Glentoran 1 MSK Zilina 4

Linfield 2 NSI Runavik 0

Skonto Riga 2 St. Patrick's 1

West Ham 3 Lusitanos 0

And on a sidenote, Spartans / Berwick lost 6-0 to Slovan Bratislava, but one has to look hard to actually find them on the football map. For despite the names, they are not a Scottish/English team.
