Pronunciation of Tavernier

Recommended Posts

Can someone give a definitive pronunciation? I read that it was pronounced "the French way" but have since heard about 4 different versions from commentators.

I've heard (with the capital being the stressed syllable):

TavernEEr - like pioneer

TavernEr - like traveller but with the stress on the final syllable

TavErni-er - like derrière but with the stress on the second syllable

TavErni-ay - what you'd expect in French, dropping the final consonant

So which is it?

According to Tom Miller of RTV, it's the pioneer sound.
