21 years ago today we lost Davie Cooper

Recommended Posts

Was at Ibrox last year for a night in memory of 20 years since the sad event.Hosted by Wee Willie with ex players Ally Dawson,Jim Denny and others.

A wonderful tribute to a great player sadly missed but never will be forgotten.

The most naturally gifted player that I can recall playing for Rangers. Understandably inconsistent, but on his day, quite possibly one of the most skilful players who ever graced the game. Gone much too soon, RIP.

Born in 1956, he was the last truly great homegrown player Scotland produced IMO. He was the end of an era.

The harsh reality is Scotland simply does not produce players of his calibre any more. And Davie Cooper never got the advantage of being pampered at the likes of Murray Park.

He had natural skills that he was born with which he could use to the utmost effect. Nowadays a young Davie Cooper would probably struggle to emulate that success due to over-coaching at youth level & the general decline of Scottish football

Not to mention video games, social media, internet, streaming tv and smart phones... And with our diet he'd probably be pretty fat by the age of 12.

As a fan brought up in the Advocaat era can someone explain why Davie Cooper was let go?

I've seen the vids, I feel like I know the footballer. I know he went to Motherwell, was still brilliant and capped for Scotland again.

Was it a Souness thing? A formation thing?

Was he hit and miss?

All I see is this glorious footballer.

I don't think Souness saw Davie Cooper as part of his new Rangers. Cooper was part of the old Rangers that had a real barren spell while Aberdeen and Dundee Utd were dominating Scottish football. He was a real talent nonetheless.

Thank you Les.
