Rangers boss Mark Warburton open to a second loan swoop for Spurs defender Dominic Ball

Old firm giants join chase for Josh Brownhill

Scottish giants Rangers and Celtic are both battling it out for the signature of Preston North End's highly-rated midfielder Josh Brownhill.

20-year-old Brownhill, who is out-of-contract in the summer, is yet to sign a new deal which has been offered by Preston and although the club will receive compensation, the amount will be a lot less than if he was to join an English club.

Both Glasgow clubs see the opportunity to capitalise and are trying to sign the player on a pre-contract fending off interest from a number of Premier League and Championship clubs.

It is understood that Liverpool, West Ham, Stoke, Southampton, Bournemouth, Wolves and Bristol City have all scouted the player in recent weeks with a view to persuading the player his future remains south of the border.

Rangers plot summer bid for Dundee ace Greg Stewart

RANGERS are set to reignite their interest in Dundee’s Greg Stewart this summer.

Gers have been tracking the forward since the start of the season but opted against making a January move.

Mark Warburton pushed through deals for Michael O’Halloran and Billy King last month — but will now look again at Stewart.

SunSport understands Championship leaders Gers will launch a bid to get him in the next window.

Stewart, who is under contract until summer 2017, has been a star man for Paul Hartley’s side since joining from Cowdenbeath in 2014.

He scored 15 goals last term in his first season as a Premiership player — a feat which saw him nominated for the PFA’s Player of the Year award.

Stewart has been handed a wider role in Dundee’s side this season but has still bagged seven goals for the Dens Park outfit.

Rangers boss Warburton and head of recruitment Frank McParland are big fans of the 25-year-old and believe he will enhance their squad next season for what they hope will be their first campaign back in the top flight.

Dundee don’t want to lose Stewart from their squad. But with his contract entering its final 12 months when the window re-opens in the summer, manager Hartley will have to weigh up whether or not to cash in on him.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton back in to bring Tottenham starlet Harry Winks to Ibrox on loan

ENGLAND Under-20 midfielder a top target of the Gers manager as he looks to continue link with the White Hart Lane club.

RANGERS are eyeing a summer loan swoop for Tottenham starlet Harry Winks.

The 20-year-old has been a long-term target of Rangers boss Mark Warburton, who is aiming to sign Winks on a season-long loan deal in July.

England under-20 midfielder Winks has already featured twice at first team level for Tottenham in the Europa League ties against FK Qarabag and Fiorentina.

Now Tottenham want Winks to experience a regular run of games – triggering off preliminary talks with Rangers.

Warburton admits he spoke with Tottenham and Arsenal earlier this week to kick off talks designed to bring quality youngsters into Rangers on loan.

Winks was originally linked with a loan move to Rangers last summer, but in the end he chose to stay in North London.

Defender Dominic Ball and striker Nathan Oduwa have both already swapped White Hart Lane for Ibrox this season and Tottenham believe the loans have helped their development.

Now Winks is poised to follow the same path as his old Spurs Academy team-mates by moving to Rangers for a year.

Report: Rangers interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers' Kevin McDonald

According to a report in the Express and Star, Rangers are interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Kevin McDonald.

The 27-year-old has fallen completely out of favour at Molineux in recent weeks, with Kenny Jackett looking at other options.

Both George Saville and Jack Price appear to have nailed down their places in Wolves’ starting line-up, and McDonald now faces a fight to win back his place.

The technically adept midfielder was left out of Wolves’ match day squad for their midweek contest against Milton Keynes Dons, and was reportedly forced to train with the club’s youngsters.

McDonald has previously been a key player for Wolves, but his future now appears uncertain and Rangers are keen to capitalise.

The Glasgow side recently secured promotion to the Scottish Premiership, and Mark Warburton reportedly feels that McDonald would be a good addition.

Wolves are believed to be demanding in excess of £1 million for the midfielder, and it remains to be seen whether Rangers would be willing to part with that much money to secure the former Sheffield United’s man’s signature.

McDonald has made 120 league appearances for Wolves in a three year stint with the Midlands side.

Livingston starlet Matthew Knox heading to Rangers in £100k deal

RANGERS are set to seal a deal for Livingston wonderkid Matthew Knox.

SunSport understands Light Blues chiefs have sanctioned a £100,000 move in a bid to beat off stiff competition from some of England’s biggest clubs.

The 16-year-old, who recently helped Scotland’s Under-17s qualify for the European Championships, impressed Gers boss Mark Warburton in a training stint at Murray Park and is likely to be fast-tracked into their Development League squad.

Knox is not short of offers, having enjoyed successful trials with Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham and Swansea but is said to have enjoyed his time with Rangers and believes under Warburton there is a realistic pathway to the first team at Ibrox.

Last month, after watching him at close quarters, Warburton said: “Knox is a smart, talented boy. He’s confident, good in possession and technically gifted.”

Knox became Livi’s youngest-ever player on Boxing Day, with a late run-out in the 4-1 rout of St Mirren – which came just four days after his birthday and was enough to break Leigh Griffiths’ record.

The Prestonpans prospect has been on their books since he was 11, but was given his chance when ex-Lions manager Mark Burchill took him under his wing after he showed up well during a work experience placement.

We're also rumoured to be looking at Lex Immers who's out of contract with Feyenoord at end of season. (No more than that.)

Report: Rangers want Barnsley's Conor Hourihane, player aware of interest, six-figure fee required

According to the Daily Mail, Rangers are keen on signing Barnsley's goalscoring midfielder Conor Hourihane during the summer transfer window.

The Gers have sealed promotion to the Scottish Premiership, but with a possible European campaign on the horizon if they can beat Hibernian in the Scottish Cup final, manager Mark Warburton will need numbers in his squad.

With loan stars Gedion Zelalem and Dominic Ball scheduled to return to Arsenal and Tottenham respectively, Warburton may place particular emphasis on the centre midfield, with one particular target in mind.

The Daily Mail report that Rangers have registered an interest in signing Barnsley skipper Conor Hourihane this summer, with Warburton looking to add quality to his squad.

Hourihane, 25, was on the books with Sunderland and Ipswich but failed to make the grade with either, joining up with Plymouth Argyle in 2011.

After three years with the Pilgrims, Hourihane was snapped up by Barnsley, and he has been a star in League One ever since. With 14 goals last season and another ten so far this term, the Irishman has been a prolific midfielder for the Tykes, impressing with his ability to score from long range.

Now, it's claimed that Rangers want to lure Hourihane to Ibrox, and the player is aware of interest from the Gers - but Barnsley are seeking a six-figure fee for Hourihane, meaning Rangers may have to cough up if they want to land their man.

Rangers eye summer swoop for Southend keeper Daniel Bentley

RANGERS could make a summer swoop for in-demand Southend goalie Daniel Bentley.

SunSport can reveal the Ibrox side are keeping tabs on the former Arsenal youngster.

Gers boss Mark Warburton is in the market for another keeper to add to his squad — and Essex-born Bentley, 22, looks to be one who fits the bill.

Bentley joined the Gunners when he was just eight before moving to the Shrimpers in 2008.

Since then he has become one of the most reliable keepers in the English Football League.

Bentley was the club’s hero in last season’s League Two play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.

Wycombe took the lead in extra-time when a free-kick went in off Bentley’s back.

But, after Southend had levelled, he saved two spot-kicks in the penalty shootout to send them up to League One.

Bentley’s current deal at Roots Hall is due to expire at the end of the season.

He has so far stalled on signing an extension, with Premier League clubs including Everton, Norwich and Bournemouth all interested.

The Shrimpers rejected a £1.25million offer from QPR last August and a host of other Championship sides including Hull and Cardiff are thought to be long-time admirers.

All of them could offer more wages than Gers — but Warburton could try to tempt Bentley to Scotland with the promise he can compete for a first-team place.

Wes Foderingham has been No1 since joining from Swindon 12 months ago.

Last season’s first-choice Cammy Bell has had to make do with a place on the bench after overcoming an injury which kept him on the sidelines for the first half of the season.

Just last week Bentley — an ever-present this term — admitted he could leave Southend.

He said: “I’ll have to wait and see what happens. My agent and I are in talks with the club. I have to weigh up what my situation is.

“I want to play at the highest level. I think every footballer would say the same.”

The news that Gers boss Warburton is on the hunt for a goalie could push Bell — who has another year left on his current contract — towards an early exit.

Warburton signed Polish keeper Maciej Gostomski from Lech Poznan in January but released him two months later.

He was forced to name untested youngster Robby McCrorie on the bench for the midweek defeat to Hibs at Easter Road after back-up Bell suffered a knee injury.

Younger than John Eustace. And is, or at least was, a far better player. No idea what state he's in now, mind.

A lot of speculation in the South African press that Pienaar is looking to return to his homeland and sign for either Kaiser Chiefs or Orlando Pirates. Much more chance of that happening than him signing for Rangers, imho.

Just as a matter of interest, I note that John Eustace has just taken over as manager of Kidderminster. Can only imagine that he was never able to regain the necessary fitness levels again to compete at a high level.

Maybe admin can make this a sticky for the summer months?

Rangers ‘keeping tabs on Wycombe striker Aaron Holloway’

Rangers have been credited with an interest in Wycombe Wanderers forward Aaron Holloway, according to reports.

The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Oldham Athletic until the end of the season and will become a free agent this summer when his contract expires.

The Welshman is a strong, powerful striker with a smooth first touch. His game is built around holding up the ball and bringing others into play.

Mark Warburton will be looking to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the club’s first season back in the Ladbrokes Premiership.
