Official: Joey Barton signs 2 year deal with Rangers

Can see us playing two holding midfielders next season

Yeah, people are looking at the Barton & Rossiter signings and supposing it is one or the other - I actually see them BOTH playing in a different formation. Barton may be on older legs now but he can actually be fairly creative. That said I see him as a deep lying playmaker - Rossiter apparently has an eye for a pass which will allow him to play further forward if need be as the movement of our team means you don't actually have to "skin" a player to beat him, our movement beats players.

Rossiter & Barton are two excellent signings. Midfield tied down, now we could do with at least one experienced CB, a couple of full backs and a couple of strikers.

RANGERS FOOTBALL CLUB is today delighted to confirm the signing of Joey Barton on a two year deal.

The 33 year-old midfielder will join the club on 1 July having won the English Championship with Burnley, and been named in the league’s team of the year.

He has vast experience having played for a number of top clubs, including Premier League spells with Manchester City, Newcastle United and Queens’ Park Rangers. Barton has also had a spell in France’s top league with Marseille and has been capped by the England national side.

Known largely as a holding midfielder, Barton has still been able to contribute at the other end, notching 36 career goals over 409 senior matches.

In his trophy cabinet, he has two Championship winners’ medals from Newcastle and Burnley, a play-off winners’ medal from QPR, his Championship ‘Team of the Year’ gong and Burnley’s Player of the Year award from last season.

One of the most recognisable figures in British football, Barton’s signing is a real coup for Rangers and everyone at the club extends a warm welcome to him.

Let's hope he lives up to the hype? Potentially a very good strategic signing. Should bring much needed steel to the team. If we could keep Dom Ball and sign a CH plus one more utility player we are not to far off the mark. Could still be looking for another couple though?
