RANGERS have demanded an investigation into the ugly scenes that saw their players and backroom staff attacked by Hibs fans at the end of the Scottish Cup Final.

Thousands of supporters of the Easter Road club invaded the pitch at the end of the game, which they won 3-2 after a dramatic injury-time winner from skipper David Gray.

It ended a wait of 114 years for the capital club to lift the famous old trophy, but disgraceful post-match scenes marred the showpiece occasion.

Rangers players including Rob Kiernan, Andy Halliday, Jason Holt, Lee Wallace and Dean Shiels were attacked by Hibs fans on the pitch and other members of the Ibrox backroom staff were assaulted and spat on.

Hibs supporters then ran to goad Rangers fans and several dozen Light Blues’ followers came over the fences and on to the pitch to trade blows with their rivals.

A Rangers spokesman said: “Rangers Football Club is shocked at the disgraceful behaviour of Hibs fans at full time.

“Rangers players and staff were assaulted by these fans who invaded the pitch and in the interests of their safety could not return to the pitch for the medal presentation.

“There can be no place for the violent behaviour witnessed at the end of the Final and Rangers fully expect the Scottish Football Association and Police Scotland to launch an investigation to find out where security measures failed.

“The club would like to commend Rangers fans for the restraint the showed under severe provocation.

Hibs fans ripped down the goalposts and tore up sections of the pitch as they celebrated their victory and it took police up to half an hour to clear the pitch of the fans.

Mounted police even made a return to Hampen for the first time since the Scottish Cup final of 1980 as they sought to restore order.

Police looked initially slow to respond and question marks will also be raised about the thin yellow line of stewards around the perimeter of the pitch at the full-time whistle as Hibs fans breached the security cord with ease.

To add insult to injury, Rangers players were presented with their losers’ medals in the dressing room after the match by reserve striker Ryan Hardie.

Hardie, on loan to Raith Rovers, was handed the gongs by an unnamed official to give to his team-mates when it became clear public safety fears would not allow them to be formally presented.

Rangers players, officials and manager Mark Warburton all declined to be interviewed after the match as they left the stadium at the earliest opportunity.

Earlier, Gray had risen to nod he and his team-mates into Easter Road immortality - and book European football next season.

The victory for Alan Stubbs’ side ended a wait of 114 years and 26 days, 41,665 days, almost one million hours and 3.5 billion seconds for Scottish football’s most most prized cup trophy.

Hibs deserved the victory against a sluggish Light Blues side, who looked leg weary after a three week absence from competitive match absence.

Man of the match Anthony Stokes opened the scoring after just two minutes before Kenny Miller responded with a header on 26 minutes, against the run of play.

Rangers snatched the lead, once more against the run of play, when Andy Halliday struck a left foot rocket from 25 yards on 64 minutes. but Hibs would not be denied.

Stokes rose to nod an equaliser from a Liam Henderson corner on 80 minutes before Gray towered above the flat footed Rangers rearguard, again from a Henderson corner, to head the winner in injury time.

Surely there is too much evidence even for the bogtrotters who seem to run this country to ignore.

You would hope that disruption and violence at the showcase final of the season could not be ignored. Disgraceful and pathetic justifications from the likes of Petrie and his ilk have got to be confronted. If we had invaded the pitch first he would have been the first to organise the lynch mob against us. Even BBC Five Live are saying that Plod were nowhere to be seen until Hibs were all over the pitch. We are the victims here but watch the "establishment" of modern Scotland try and pin the blame on us. Hopefully the video and photo evidence will be so compelling that it cannot be ignored. Mind you, how many Hibs fans did you see arrested after the worst violence on a football pitch in Scotland since 1980? Plod Scotland's reputation is now on the line.

Rangers are the most hated club in world football, there is no denying this fact,it will not get better, probably worse as we progress, and it is nothing to do with football,it is a sectarian problem encouraged by the media and allowed by the Scottish government!,this has been allowed to fester over the years and I fear blood will be spilled more often and today gave me a glimpse of what is going to increase in the coming seasons!.

Cup should be taken off them.

Naw but the precedent of sorts would see them banned from the SC for two seasons, one after an appeal.

Tbh I'd be happy with catching those who committed assault and charging them.

Remind me what happened when a solitary sellikfan ran onto the pitch and slapped the opposition 'keeper in a European tie.

What chance do we have, this from Head of Media for Scots Tories.

a) why were Rangers fans on the pitch other than to fight?

b) stop greeting and go home

Spin and deflection, what would you expect from a Head of Mhedia?

How about the obvious questions, (a) why were Hibs fans on the pitch in the first place? Other teams have won the cup for the first time, or the first time in ages, without triggering a riot. (b) who assaulted the Rangers players and staff? And © are you happy to condone assault and criminal damage? If so I think we should know at the next election.
