Rangers boss Mark Warburton to extend Ibrox stay

Recommended Posts

RANGERS boss Mark Warburton will sign a new contract this week, tying him to the club until 2019.

In his debut campaign at Ibrox, the 53-year-old guided the Light Blues to the Championship title and Petrofac Cup glory, as well as reaching the Scottish Cup Final.

Warburton’s success has seen him linked with various jobs in England, including Fulham and QPR, prompting the Ibrox board to enter extension negotiations with him and assistant David Weir.

The Englishman confirmed: “I’ve agreed a deal with the club to commit longer term, for another year until 2019.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed being at Rangers. It is a privilege to be manager.

“I hope the club think we had a good season last year and are happy with how myself, David, the staff and players have performed. It is a nice combination to have.

“Last year we started laying the foundations for what is a long-term project. We can now get our teeth into it and push forward.

“We know what we have to do, we know where the club wants to be.”

Meanwhile, Kenny Miller has urged Martyn Waghorn and James Tavernier to reconsider their decision to knock back extensions.

The English duo played a key role in the Light Blues’ title-winning Championship campaign following their arrival from Wigan, with striker Waghorn scoring 28 goals and Tavernier netting 15 from right-back.

Although the pair are contracted until 2018, Rangers were keen to tie them down on longer deals.

That attempt failed, though, fuelling speculation that Waghorn and Tavernier see their futures back across the border.

However, striker Miller is hopeful negotiations will continue and that his colleagues can be persuaded to change their minds.

The ex-Scotland international is in his third spell at Ibrox and knows from his own experience that leaving the Old Firm can be a step down.

“The grass is not always greener,” said Miller, 36, who was at a Callaway golf event at Ibrox today.

“In football, players and managers move on, but we are hopeful we can keep the lads together.

“They did a great job last season and it’s about showing that consistency and performance again this season. They enjoy their football here and the demands, and they enjoy being successful.

“There are a lot of factors coming into play when it comes to signing a new deal. These things happen in football when it comes to contract negotiations.

“Waggy and Tav were great for us last year. It’s always hard to hit the ground running at a new club, especially when it’s a club the size of Rangers.

“Rob Kiernan, Andy Halliday, Wes Foderingham and Jason Holt were also outstanding through the season. But we have to be realistic – it was at a level this club is not used to playing at.

“This season it’ll be about putting in that same level of performance.

“The expectations will be even more this season. The demands will rise as will the challenge, but the lads are fully aware of that.”

Rangers are back in competitive action on Saturday when they take on Motherwell in their League Cup group stage opener.

Their last visit to Fir Park was in the 2015 Premiership play-off final when a 3-0 loss capped a 6-1 aggregate defeat.

Good news, he can do some fantastic work with another 3 years. As for Waghorn and Tavernier that's irrelevant at this point. If they feel the same way this time next year then it may be relevant but right now it means nothing to the season ahead.

Really pleased with this.

I wish everyone (media) etc would shut up about Tav & Waghorn. I mean, it's like they don't even consider they are people with families. We just expect a player's family to move wherever they go and upsticks. They have two years left on their contracts and that's fine for now.
