General Election called

Recommended Posts

She's since changed the wording to "parliamentary mandate" after the series of polls indicating there was no desire for indyref2.

Constitutional matters are reserved for Westminster and in the last general election the SNP stated "The SNP will always support independence - but that is not what this election is about" so they don't have any sort of mandate for indyref2, other than an irrelevant one in respect of an ultra vires vote in Edinburgh.

No fan at all of Corbyn but the decision to rule out a "progressive " (joke) alliance with a fairly savage put down of wee nippy is a good thing. If Scottish Labour can get the points across that splitting up the UK is bad news for all workers, that leaving the EU isn't a disaster and that the SNP have consistently let public sector workers down then they could actually get quite a lot of former separatists votes. According to some of the articles I've read there is a substantial anti EU sentiment within their support (surprising that eh, we're not really different).

So even if the pro UK vote is split so long as the SNP vote is diminished then I'll take that as a win. Any decent decrease in their numbers gives the UK govt the ability to stare these buggers down. Here's hoping.

Maybe the stupid part I mentioned comes from, like most airy-fairy ideas anybody radical in Labour comes up with, who pays for those things ? In my experience it will be folk like me who pay. Usually Westminster led contracts come in 10 or more times over budget, that's if they ever work at all.

I believe in public ownership of the railways too. But I'm old enough to remember the shambles they became years ago.

Saving the health service from privateering ? The SNP are trying that.

Free primary school meals ? Kids should be taken off parents who don't feed their weans.

No foreign wars ? What if the Spanish move into Gibraltar or the French sail into the Channel Islands ? Where do we draw the line ?

I was a Labour supporter for years mate. Section 1 on my union card too. Guys like Blair ruined the party. But Corbyn would be a fecking disaster.

Perhaps I should have clarified: 'no more foreign wars like Iraq.' Different matter with British protectorates.

The money will not come from you and me. The tax burden will swing back to the rich and those who avoid payment like Google, Starbucks etc. The MPs attacking Corbyn are only in parliament to line their pockets - they are Tories in all but name; it is Corbyn's sincerity that frightens them. He has the lowest claim for expenses of any MP and is a lifelong campaigner for socialist principles unlike Tony Blair who, you are right,a slmost ruined the party.

There's far, far too many of them now. And not nearly enough foster carers. My 8 year old grandson in south London told me he has seen homeless people in his local park killing birds to eat. Modern Britain eh?

The money ALWAYS comes from folk like you and me mate. Rates, tax, vat, etc, etc. There never has been any will to tax mega companies or the super rich. Plenty of talk but in reality they lessened the burden on these people. Inheritance tax, top rate tax and whatever else. Corbyn would have a vat increase in his first budget.

I'm aware that there are plenty of poor citizens here but there is no excuse for anybody starving their weans. London has its own problems - but give the Tories another few years and they'll have driven the poorer folk up north.

This country is fecked with far more to come post brexit. Telling fairy tales to the electorate is something Labour leaders excel at.

I agree with some of this. But what do you propose we do?

There's nothing we can do Bear. The country is fecked and piling up more and more debt by the minute. Our reps at Westminster and Toyland are self-serving useless toads.

I won't bother voting again as there's no point.

There's always a least worst option' Boab. Where I am, a lot of the Labour guys who can't stand the pompous Nat oaf who sqeaks into Parliament on a minority share of the vote are going to vote for the Tory simply because he used to have a real job starting 5 am and not finishing until finished unlike the rest of the candidates - playschool/school/college/politics and they may as well have missed out the two middle stages for all they learned at either of them.
