Mark Allen Appointed DoF

Recommended Posts

Can't say I know a lot about him and I'm unsure appointing the DoF after the manager has been brought in makes sense but he does have a good reputation so I'm fairly happy with this.

Let's hope it all clicks with these people across the non-playing level of the club. In any case, a DoF seems to be more of a long-term project than something that will yield instant benefits - even though I can imagine quite a few people hoping we'll get 5 loanees from ManC now ...

Cardiff ex-footballer Mark Allen shares Manchester City's Premier League success

After leaving Cardiff to become a professional footballer, Mark Allen’s life took him across the Atlantic to America before he embarked on a career in the media back in Britain.

And now, 30 years after his football career began, he is celebrating a Premier League title win with employers Manchester City.

Mark, who is head of academy business and operations at the club, watched Sunday’s nail-biting 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers alongside club legends and officials as City were crowned champions for the first time in 44 years.

“It was an unbelievable day and one that you couldn’t probably write the script for,” said Mark, whose job means he is responsible for working with the young players coming through the club’s ranks.

Llanrumney-born Mark joined Manchester City in 2009 following almost two decades in the media industry.

After leaving Swindon Town Football Club in the early 1980s he was awarded a scholarship to study business and accountancy at the University of San Diego – with his success featured in the Echo in 1983.

He then worked for broadcaster HTV while playing semi-professionally for clubs including Cwmbran and Port Talbot.

Mark then spent 14 years at music network MTV, where he became managing director of the broadcasting division, and worked as managing director at London-based Deluxe Digital before joining the Sky Blues.

And he described Sunday’s epic Premiership finale – with City scoring two injury-time goals to snatch the title from city rivals United – as “fantastic”.

Mark, who watched the game from the directors’ box, told the Echo: “It was real Roy of the Rovers stuff – it was almost the last kick of the last game and an unbelievable feeling when the whistle blew and we realised City had finally done it.

“For me it was great but I was pleased for the people who have been lifers at City and been here through thick and thin.

“It was a great feeling to be part of it but I was just happier for those people who have been here for all those years through some of the barren times.”

The 49-year-old said he was delighted three academy teenagers – Karim Rekik, Abdul Razak and Denis Suarez – had joined players like Carlos Tevez and match-winner Sergio Aguero on the pitch at the end of the match after breaking in to the first team during the season.

Mark, whose wife Tracy is an ex-gymnast and whose twin daughters Michelle and Natalie have represented Wales at cross country, added: “After the game we celebrated and a number of the team came in with the trophy, which was a nice touch, and then the club itself put on a party for all the staff on Monday night.”

Here is an interesting piece by someone called Mike Keegan, from The Daily Bedlam.

It is interesting because it 'links' Mark Allen with a 'tapping up charge', but does not follow it up in the body of the article. .

Guilt by association, then; it seems that that is what the writer intends.

Mark Allen, former head of Manchester City’s academy, is leaving to become Rangers’ director of football after an inquest at the Etihad into why the club has been banned from signing young players.

City were last month prohibited from signing academy players for two years and fined £300,000 for breaching youth development rules.

The Premier League acted on complaints over the tapping-up of two schoolboys.

Sportsmail understands that the ban, the second year suspended for three years, seriously concerned City’s Abu Dhabi owners.

City say that Allen, 54, wanted a new challenge even before the Premier League verdict and that he left of his own volition, on good terms.

Allen is known to have been looking to move on and has taken coaching badges.

Many may see his arrival at Rangers as a coup for the Ibrox club who have much ground to make up on rivals Celtic.

Rangers ended their hunt for a director of football by appointing Allen earlier this week

Welshman Allen, at City since 2009 , was released by Swindon Town as a youngster. He moved to the USA to earn a business degree before returning as a managing director for music broadcaster MTV.

He leaves City with homegrown faces still rare at first-team level and after a third defeat in a row in the FA Youth Cup final.

In a separate development, a respected academy coach at City has been suspended after allegations of misconduct.

Canadian Mark Burton, who insiders say has been behind the success of some of the club’s younger age groups, is under investigation. The situation is being monitored by neighbours United, who could make a move for Burton should he leave City.
