Big Day On Saturday

Recommended Posts

Coincidentally my first Rangers game at Ibrox was against Hamilton as well (a 2-0 win in 1987 IIRC). My main memory is of Dave McPherson rampaging down the right wing in front of the Enclosures.

I took my oldest daughter a couple of years back for her 8th birthday 'treat' and we won 6-0 though she's never been back. My youngest was 8 earlier this year but hasn't been tempted to go yet.

Hope you all have a great day!

I'm taking my two sons to Ibrox for the first time this Saturday. Hamilton Accies at home under a caretaker manager perhaps wasn't the match I envisaged would be their first when they were born but we're all out of big European nights and glamour friendlies currently.

My first match was John Greig's testimonial game in 1978. In truth I was too young to appreciate it but my dad so admired Greig he wanted me to see him play and he wanted to pay tribute to him. We played a Scotland select and I've only a few memories of it. One was the Nottingham Forest winger John Robertson's family sitting behind us and supporting Rangers. He later became assistant manager at Celtic, I always wondered how they felt about that.

My Dad is coming on Saturday too, along with my brother-in-law (who is actually a St Mirren fan!) and two of his sons, my nephews. It'll be their first Rangers game too. My youngest is a year older now than I was in 1978 so I'm not sure how much he'll remember about it when he's in his late 40s. Neither of my boys are as interested in football as I was at their age, but they both say they support Rangers (my wife laughed when I 'd say to people I'd let them choose who they supported, she's right, that wasn't ever going to happen) so they're very excited about it.

Anyway, I don't always agree with everyone on Gersnet about everything, sometimes even I realise I'm being a thrawn at times. But I'm strangely emotional about Saturday, it feels like a big deal.

Also, if you could try and not swear too much on Saturday that would be great!

Enjoy the experience with your boys!

That last comment made me chuckle. Remember what you said to me???? It's funny how you change your own attitudes when you take your own children to games.

My first game as far as I can remember was v Kilmarnock in the early sixties. I remember sitting on my Dads shoulders in the Derry with everyone singing. The songs meant nothing to me then I was just in awe. I think we won 2-0. Looking back on our fantastic Gersnet Archive( If you have not visited you should) it must have been 63-64 as that is the only 2-0 I can find in the early 60's

Was my first trip to Ibrox too, though I'd seen Rangers many times by then at Pittodrie. Only got to it as it was on a Sunday and I didn't have to deliver milk. Was a great day and a bit of an eye opener to a young land from the sticks. Spent most of the game perched on a barrier at the rear of the Broomloan.

Braham Hemdani ran the line that day.

Despite being from Hamilton I had never seen them play Rangers until one day in 1987 when Accies pulled off a famous Scottish cup win against the Rangers of Graeme Souness. That was the first and still only time I have seen them play Hamilton.
