compo 5,952
Now that the Scottish government can set a minimum price per unit for alcohol do you think this will stop the booze merchants getting drunk or make them healthier ,as a non drinker of booze it won't have any effect on me .
the gunslinger 3,366
I think people will go to big warehouses in carlisle and bring it north to sell cheaper on the black market. Taking jobs out of scotland and money.
Gonzo79 13,354
Kids with alcoholic parents will end up eating cheaper food, wearing cheaper clothes etc. More marvellous Nanny Statesmanship from the SNP.
Uilleam 5,278
I think that, at first, it will affect cheap booze. Those of us who drink quality brews, distillations, etc will find little impact. Consumers of strong ciders will see a big difference, as will those who sup the close wine.
colinstein 294
it's a tax on the poor and a handout to supermarkets who already make enough money. It won't affect middle class knobs or MSP's in their Holyrood bubble or doctors who called for this sipping their single malts

If the price of the cheapest blended whiskey goes up then I expect that the same would happen for decent blends and middle of the road malts.
BEARGER 1,829
I tend to side with the health professionals on this. It problably will not make any difference to those already with a drink problem but will stop youngsters developing a problem. Heard all the same doom and gloom when the smoking ban came in and it’s been a great succcess.

Quite different legislation though. What do you think would have happened if minimum pricing of tobacco had been introduced instead of the smoking ban?

Won’t the decent blends and middle of the road malts already be above the minimum price threshold ? Just asking as I genuinely don’t know

Just asking as I genuinely don’t know Probably, yes. I think that other products will believe that it is possible to charge a higher price though. Then again, I might be wrong. It could just be that the cheapest products disappear from the market in Scotland.
