'Demoting Rangers was wrong' decision for Scottish football...

...says former Celtic star Paul Lambert.

Parkhead fans' favourite insists clubs didn't think through the consequences of placing the Ibrox side in Scotland's fourth tier.

Paul Lambert has criticised the decision to “demote” Rangers in 2012.

The former Celtic midfielder has hit out at Scotland's clubs for not thinking about the impact the move would have on the game and the international team.

The Ibrox club had to reapply to join the SPL after oldco Rangers suffered liquidation and were made to start out in the old Division Three after clubs voted almost unanimously against the proposal.

It took Rangers four seasons to make their way through the leagues before returning to Scotland's top flight and Lambert believes this has had a big impact on the Scotland national team.

Talking to beIN Sports , Lambert said: “I think it was the worst decision to demote Rangers three leagues. "It wasn’t good for the Scottish game, the Scottish league and certainly not for the national team.

As for the rest, sanity was never high on anyone's agenda back in the day. They saw gold, scented glory, and bayed for blood. One might call it Scottish clan mentality brought into the 21st century. What made it worse was that those with authority lacked all of it and followed the call of their master.

It’s only helped to strengthen one team and as a consequence has left the rest of Scottish football trying to catch up so the end result is one dominant team and a poor league only time will tell if we can catch up to challenge let’s hope so.

He is correct, you just need to look at the way Hearts were dealt with compared to us!, despite them going into admin with a much higher debt!, different rules for Rangers!, what happened to us will never happen to another club, ever!

The SFA wanted Rangers put into the old SFL1 (now the championship) after getting voted out the SPL. Regan assured SPL clubs, whose budgets were based on both Rangers & Celtc being in the SPL, that Rangers would be out of the top flight for just one season.

However the one or two semi-intelligent SPL realised that this would not be possible. When applying to the SFL it was apparent that Rangers would need to go to SFL3 (the lowest division), That's what happened.

Regan effectively misled those SPL clubs. The fact he kept his job was scandalous.
