Ally McCoist expects a decision over Graeme Murty's Rangers future in the coming weeks

ALLY MCCOIST reckons there will be clarity over Graeme Murty’s future as Rangers manager in the coming weeks.

Murty has stabilised the Light Blues since being asked to step into the dugout for a second time following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha in October.

But there is no guarantee that the 43-year-old will be given the chance to continue at Ibrox beyond the end of the campaign.

Dave King and his board must make a crucial call and former Gers boss McCoist believes a decision will be sooner rather than later.

He said: “I would expect a bit of clarity in the coming weeks. I think that is what will happen one way or another.

“I am not going sit here and say who should get the job, Graeme should get the job or somebody else should get it. I honestly believe we will get a bit of clarity in the coming weeks.

“In an ideal world you have got stability but it is a fact that results will dictate whether you have got stability or not. If you don’t get results you won’t have stability because you will change manager.

“I would be very hopeful that within the next couple of weeks we will shed a bit more light on it. I think everybody would appreciate that.”

Murty had started to win over his doubters as he led Rangers to six successive wins in the Premiership and Scottish Cup after the winter break.

But back-to-back defeats to Celtic and Kilmarnock have put his future back up for debate as the Ibrox board consider their options this term.

McCoist said: “I don’t think it has been a reality check. We lost games against Kilmarnock, we lost games against Celtic.

“Graeme is an intelligent enough lad to know where Rangers are at this moment in time. Clearly, the last couple of Old Firm games you could argue Rangers could have won with a bit of luck and better finishing.

“But they didn’t and in many ways that is still down to the fact that they have still got a way to go. I wouldn’t say it is a reality check for them.

“It could have worked the other way, they could have won both games and then you are getting carried away and under false pretences.

“There probably was [a groundswell of opinion for Murty] but you’re only two games away from that opinion changing with the majority of supporters.

“But I don’t think the Old Firm game or the Kilmarnock defeat has been a major factor. The Kilmarnock result could’ve easily happened, considering their form.

“And against the best team in the country that result could have easily happened. The more important thing is that you’d probably be looking for better results and performances against some of the other teams.”

Seemingly Frank de Boer is high on the list and rumours are that meetings have already taken place. They are just rumours until now.

FdB would be a great appointment in my opinion. Guy has had a great career as a player and a good career as a coach. Ajax hadn't won the league in something like 7 years and he went on to win 4 titles in a row. Inter wasn't a success but that's an incredibly tough job and had he done well there then we wouldn't get a look in. The Palace job counts for nothing, the nuts world of being a manager in the daft league. 4 games then sacked. It's a joke.

The problem might be he'd want to overhaul the squad and I'm not sure we can afford that again. He also has a particular style of football he likes to play. I think our current squad is only 3/4 players away from being back where we belong but whether or not the core of the current squad would suit FdB's system I'm not so sure. I think he'd be a good appointment and he'd get my vote over Clarke, Ross and Murty.

I don't think we can totally excuse him for his CP experience as he should have known that you can't make Dobin the Donkey win the Grand National. The same thing happened at Inter and CP that he came up against players too old, not good enough or not willing to adapt to his system. That caused dressing room unrest and the players never played for him.

Guess that's modern football these days. No soul. You'd reckon players would be hanging on his every word. He's got the trophies to back it all up. I take the Inter point. The Palace fiasco not so much. You can't determine a managers fate after 4 games.

Would you you take him?

I think our present squad actually tries to play the way de Boer wants to play so I don't see that as being a problem. He wants to set pressure as soon as the ball is lost to give the defence time to regroup which is what Murty also tries to do. Warburton started that way and the seemed to change to a less pressing formation.

Yes I think we have a base of players to play his system.

Hodgson has done well at Palace since taking over, that's De Boer's biggest problem currently. That aside i'm not convinced a high profile Dutchman is what we need currently. He's not going to be able to spend much money, the nucleus of the squad is already in place and it has a Scottish/British core. We need someone who can organise and motivate those people, is De Boer that person?
