With some bands it is more about the collective sound they create rather than individual expertise, JD and the Pistols are two examples of game changing sounds. I'd also add an early Nirvana to that list.

That should be the case with any good band.

 

The Pistols didn't really do anything new, musically speaking.  The grunge scene threw up some interesting stuff - Soundgarden were the best of the bunch, in my opinion.  

 

As for Joy Division - each to their own.
