Raw but when he's on it, he makes things happen and would make a decent impact sub.

Thing we have to watch is stunting the growth of our own players, eg. Middleton.

Sadly this appears to be something we are doing consistently at the moment.

I fully concur that we need to move to a position where we are self funding and sustainable.

I fear that will now be some time off. As we lost perhaps our best opportunity to achieve this when we were in the lower leagues.

Totally disagree with you. We could not pay premier champion players in the lower leagues so we were always going to have lesser quality players. This going youth thing is a nonsense and we would still be down fighting in the lower leagues if we went that way. What youth player at that time has made it big apart from maybe McKay. We were also getting robbed blind by the spivs so all the money was going out the back door. Us missing a trick in the lower leagues is a massive red herring.

It made business sense to sign the likes of Ian Black at the time. With the new company taking over, fans wanted to feel the same way as we always did, and that meant buying the top Scottish players (as Black, Templeton, Sandaza were seen at the time). Same as keeping McCoist as manager. We would not have sold 40k season tickets in Division 3 if we had cut costs. Many fans might never have returned, or so the fear was.

Also, we were actually expecting to win the Cups, even in 2013 the bookies had us as second favourites behind Celtic, so we needed a squad who could (in theory) have given them a game if we drew them in the Cups. It never happened, but the main reason we never built up our cash reserves is as Pete says, less to do with overpaid players, more to do with Ashley’s tipping us off & Green’s tea leafing. Allegedly.

youth sides would be eaten alive in those lower divisions

This. While many will argue that the likes of Ejaria Wilson, Rossiter and Co. are quality-wise "much" better than most of our youngsters - not least due to a probably far better "young EPL league" and greater competition - it would be cool not to have that many young loan imports blocking the way of Middleton, Barjonas, Burt et al. I was indeed somewhat surprised that we quickly dropped Barjonas from starting line-ups and the bench despite him playing some neat stuff when called upon. That is where the likes of Cummings, Barker and Co. made and make their mark, competitive action. Methinks most of our youngsters did rather well in the Development team's challenge games over the season and sure learned a lot.  The Toulon tournament - usually a good place to put oneself into the window - perhaps came a bit late after a long season ... and the coach changing the line-ups a bit too much.

I do expect that Gerrard will look to bolster the squad for instant success ... and thus will explore all possible channels (not least those who he knows best). Silverware will be his benchmarks, as it is and was for any Rangers manager. The means for that, not least next season, may have to suit the end.

Meanwhile, it has been reported in Mexica that Pena will move to Necaxa for the remainder of our loan deal with Cruz Azul, probably after rehab.

Snatched from FF:

"Club Necaxa gave the surprise in the MX Liga Draft by announcing Carlos 'Gullit' Peña as his reinforcement for the next tournament. WE RECOMMEND: Draft 2018 Liga MX: highs and lows LIVE It was through its social networks that the arrival of the Mexican midfielder, who had recently entered one of the recent clinics of Julio César Chávez, a former Mexican boxer, became official. The 'Gullit' comes to the team from Cruz Azul of Pedro Caixinha, where injuries and extra court problems did not let him perform completely in the field. FOLLOW HERE MORE MOVEMENTS FROM THE DRAFT Likewise, the team reported that Giovani Hernández joins their ranks from Club Atlético Zacatepec. Another one that was united was Carlos Villanueva, coming from the same club of Ascent.

i saw rumours of this this morning and didn't believe it at first..... Mark Allen has pulled a master stroke to persuade a team to take him on loan while he's sitting in a rehab centre , do wonder how much of his salary is actually covered though...
