UK government urged to investigate Israeli plan to 'take down' minister

Opposition parties call for removal of Israeli embassy staffer Shai Masot

Theresa May was on Sunday facing mounting pressure to launch a full investigation into an Israeli diplomat caught plotting to "take down" a British minister for his opposition the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

The opposition Labour and the Scottish National parties both called on the British prime minister to investigate Shai Masot, who caught by an undercover reporter discussing with a British civil servant how to discredit deputy foreign minister Alan Duncan.

The Israeli embassy on Saturday said Masot would be removed from his "junior" position and apologised for his actions, while Britain's foreign office said: "The UK has a strong relationship with Israel and we consider the matter closed."

However, Emily Thornberry, the Labour shadow foreign minister, called for the removal of Masot from the UK and a full inquiry into the affair, which she described as a "national security issue". The call was echoed by the Scottish National party, while dissent began to grow within May's Conservative party over the foreign office statement.

Thornberry said: "The exposure of an Israeli embassy official discussing how to bring down or discredit a government minister and other MPs because of their views on the Middle East is extremely disturbing," she said.

"Improper interference in our democratic politics by other states is unacceptable whichever country is involved.

"It is simply not good enough for the Foreign Office to say the matter is closed. This is a national security issue.

"The embassy official involved should be withdrawn, and the government should launch an immediate inquiry into the extent of this improper interference and demand from the Israeli government that it be brought to an end."

The SNP's foreign affairs spokesman, Alex Salmond MP, said: “It is completely unacceptable for the government to declare the matter closed - Shai Masot must go and go immediately before the end of his tenure at the Israeli embassy.

"Boris Johnson must right now revoke Mr Masot's diplomatic status and remove him from the country as would most certainly have happened had the circumstances been reversed.I would expect the UK Government to fully investigate this matter."

Nicolas Soames, a former Conservative defence minister, likened the tactics of Masot to Soviet spies during the cold war.

He told Middle East Eye: "This ranks as the equivalent of Soviet intelligence in what they are doing to suborn democracy and interfere in due process."

And Crispin Blunt, a Conservative MP and the chairman of the Commons foreign affairs committee, told MEE: "What we cannot have is Israel acting in the UK with the same impunity it enjoys in Palestine.

"This is clearly interference in another country's politics of the murkiest and most discreditable kind."

The Israeli embassy said Mark Regev, the Israeli ambassador, had spoken to Duncan to apologise and made clear that Masot's remarks were "completely unacceptable".

Maria Strizzolo, the British civil servant caught discussing the "take down" with Masot, resigned on Sunday.

In the tapes, Masot, who in an online profile deactivated on Saturday described Niccolo Machiavelli as his "God", asked Strizzolo: "Can I give you some MPs that you can take down?"

Strizzolo, who recently moved to a position in the education department, replied: "Well you know, if you look hard enough I'm sure that there is something they are trying to hide."

Masot said: "Yeah, I have some MPs."

Strizzolo said: "Let’s talk about it."

Masot then told the reporter: "No, she knows which MPs I want to take down."

Strizzolo replied that it would be good to remind her, and Masot then said: "The deputy foreign minister."

This did not come as a surprise to Strizzolo, who replied: "You still want to go for it?"

Masot said: "No, he's doing a lot of problems."

In a statement on Saturday, Strizzolo said: “The implications the Guardian is seeking to draw from a few out-of-context snippets of a conversation, obtained by subterfuge, over a social dinner are absurd.

“The context of the conversation was light, tongue-in-cheek and gossipy. Any suggestion that I, as a civil servant working in education, could ever exert the type of influence you are suggesting is risible.

"Shai Masot is someone I know purely socially and as a friend. He is not someone with whom I have ever worked or had any political dealings beyond chatting about politics, as millions of people do, in a social context."

Corbyn ally says 'Jewish Trump fanatics making up' antisemitism claims

Labour MP calls for NEC member Peter Willsman to be suspended after comments are recorded

One of Jeremy Corbyn’s allies on Labour’s ruling body has been recorded saying that Jewish “Trump fanatics” are “making up” some of the allegations of antisemitism in the party.

Peter Willsman, a member of the party’s national executive committee, was taped at a meeting this month when the NEC refused to adopt in full the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism.

Willsman said he would “not be lectured” by Jewish supporters of the US president “making up duff information without any evidence at all”.

As others attending the meeting asked Willsman to stop speaking, he continued, raising his voice to say: “I think we should ask the ... rabbis: where is your evidence of severe and widespread antisemitism in this party?”

Later in the recording, released on Monday by the Jewish Chronicle, Willsman could be heard asking members of the NEC to raise their hands if they had witnessed antisemitism in the party.

In an apparent response to some raising their hands, he replied: “I’m amazed. I’ve certainly never seen any.”

(You can hear his extremely unpleasant diatribe here:

As I said earlier, it's not even nuanced these days)

Willsman, who is secretary of the Campaign For Labour Democracy group which helped Corbyn ascend to the leadership, previously avoided punishment for his remarks at the 17 July meeting by apologising and suggesting he had been misquoted.

The recording came as Jewish leaders accused Corbyn of failing to stamp out antisemitism inside the party. Last week, three leading Jewish newspapers published the same front-page editorial warning that a government led by Corbyn would pose “an existential threat to Jewish life” in the UK.

Reports, played down by Labour sources, also suggested that the shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, had criticised Corbyn in person over the party’s handling of the Margaret Hodge case.

Hodge faces disciplinary action from the party after a confrontation with Corbyn in the House of Commons over the issue, in which she called him an “antisemitic racist”. McDonnell has already stated that Labour should drop its disciplinary inquiry into the MP.

The Labour MP Luciana Berger, who is the parliamentary chair of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM), responded to the recording by calling for the party to suspend Willsman and conduct a formal investigation.

She told the Jewish Chronicle: “Anyone listening to this recording will be appalled to hear the venom and fury directed by Mr Willsman at the British Jewish community. That he accuses the Jewish community of falsifying social media and being ‘Trump fanatics’ in order to deny the serious concerns of 68 rabbis beggars belief.”

Berger added that NEC papers and recent press reports provided evidence of antisemitism in the Labour party. She said: “In the past week alone, two Labour councillors have been suspended and the party has confirmed that 252 people are being investigated for the comments they’ve made online directed at Dame Margaret Hodge MP. Now an accurate record of this diatribe has been identified the party should urgently conduct a formal investigation of this conduct and suspend him today.”

Labour’s deputy leader, Tom Watson, described Willsman as a “loud-mouthed bully” who “disgusted him”.

A Labour party spokeswoman said: “We don’t comment on individual cases.”

It's such a relief to have it straight from a member of Labour's NEC that their antisemitism isn't a slander by Mossad after all. Now that they've identified it's all down to Trump supporters, we can stand down MI5 and renew our excellent national relationship with Israel.

As for those nasty Trump supporters, they shouldn't get too upset by the latest Labour convulsion. Another of Labour's many "loud-mouthed bullies" will be along any minute to assert it's all the fault of someone else.

Labour, where the truth is just too unpalatable.

It's an interesting logistical puzzle that Labour may soon have more people under investigation than available to conduct these investigations. The workload must be considerable.

It may have to bring in expertise in such matters.

Perhaps some old comrades from elsewhere, experienced in such inquisitions, say from..........you can fill in the blanks.....

It can then rehash the old Soviet script of "we run this investigation to determine those comrades who disagree with the running of this iinvestigation",

to read "those comrades who agree with the running of this investigation".

this is the discussion. Any accusation of Maria Strizzola and her "close personal friend" who is an Israellie spy would according to that definition would be anti semitic. Even if she was guilty the accusation is "anti semitic"...complete nonsense

and your attempt to call any criticism of Israel as "jew baiting" is a typical response of the right wing zionists and their smear tactics

yes of course. It's a smear campaign by right wing Labour MP's and their tory allies who would rather see the tories in Downing Street than a socialist.

That is the bottomline motive.

This is just another attempt in the long running show of desperately trying to discredit Corbyn and a Labour Party that threatens to correct the many inbalances that have accrued during 4 decades of neoliberalism.

Wrong again. the discussion on this thread is about "Antisemitism in the Labour party".

And wrong again, I do not now, did not then, and never have called criticism of Israel "Jew Baiting".

And third time......unlucky, not even close, wrong again; I am neither right wing, nor Zionist, and I am not given to smear tactics. (In fact I could easily suggest that your categorisation is designed mainly  to avoid the issue, and is, in fact, a smear, itself.)

Three strikes, and, em, well,  you're out.

Perhaps you should stick to peever.
