A GLASGOW councillor has appeared in court charged with acting in an abusive manner and making sectarian remarks.

The SNP's Russell Robertson, 59, is accused of "behaving in a threatening or abusive manner" at his home on September 2.

He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court today with his co-accused, David Hara.

The pair, of the same Gartcosh address are charged with acting in an abusive manner, shouting, swearing and making offensive and sectarian remarks.

The charge is said to be aggravated by religious prejudice.

A trial was set for February next year.

Mr Robertson was ordained to appear and while Hara, 28, was bailed.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman confirmed he was aware of the case, but said he could not comment on personal matters.

The SNP press office has also been contacted for comment.

BIGOTRY CHARGE

SNP councillor in charge of arranging controversial marches, Russell Robertson, accused of shouting sectarian abuse outside his home

Robertson, 59, and partner David Harra, 28, face claims of bigotry following Celtic's 1-0 win over Rangers back in September.

A NATS councillor who rules on controversial marches has appeared in court accused of bigotry after an Old Firm clash.

Russell Robertson, 59, and partner David Harra, 28, face claims they shouted sectarian abuse outside their home.

Robertson sits on Glasgow City Council’s processions committee and helps decide whether parades get the go-ahead.

He and Harra, of Gartcosh, Lanarkshire, denied causing “fear or alarm” by shouting, swearing and launching “offensive and sectarian remarks” following Celtic’s 1-0 win in September.

Prosecutors at Glasgow Sheriff Court said the charge was aggravated by religious prejudice.

Robertson was ordered to appear later and Harra was bailed.

A trial was set for next year.

There should be compulsory IQ tests if you want to become a councillor or MP.  That would rule the likes of Robertson out.

As for any nitwit who voted for this reprobate, the less said, the better.
