Celtc fans last night

Someone should tell the yahoos about all the Irishmen who gave their lives during both wars.

And someone should tell the Away Days twitter person the difference between 'your' and 'you're'.

Celtic fans slammed for throwing fireworks and ‘chanting anti-poppy song’ at Dens Park

An investigation is under way after fireworks were aimed towards home supporters at Dens Park on Wednesday night.

Fans say they felt unsafe during the SPFL premier league match between Dundee and Celtic after away supporters launched pyrotechnics towards home supporters in the South Enclosure.

Dundee suffered a Halloween nightmare on the pitch, losing 5-0 to Brendan Rogers’ Glasgow side and supporters were left feeling further aggrieved, with some accusing police and stewards of inaction and allowing the large travelling support to get away with holding banned items in the Kilmac Stadium.

It is an offence for anyone to enter a football ground with fireworks, flares or pyrotechnics of any type, yet no arrests were made during the game.

Police are investigating with specialist football unit officers in an attempt to identify those responsible.

Video evidence of fireworks landing in the South Enclosure has appeared online, with police clearly visible in the vicinity.

One Dundee fan, who asked not to be named, said: “Policing at Dens was an absolute shambles on Wednesday night, it was embarrassing.

“The Green Brigade (Celtic supporters group) and Celtic fans were letting off pyrotechnics at will.

“As far as I could see, no-one was arrested — it’s changed days from how games used to be policed.

“The referee should have stopped the game, the devices were being thrown towards Dundee fans from the Bob Shankly stand.

“It was glaringly obvious where the trouble was coming from and the police and stewards did not intervene at all.”

Footage of Celtic fans appearing to sing an anti-poppy chant at Dens Park has also surfaced online.

The clip surfaced on the Football Away Days Twitter account on Thursday morning – and claims to show Hoops fans shouting “‘stick your f*****g poppy up your a**e”.

The post stated: “Celtic fans at Dundee last night with a controversial song”.

A Dundee FC spokesman said: “The club share the concerns being expressed by the home supporters.

“A plan was put in place to deal with the large numbers of visiting supporters in conjunction with our security team and Police Scotland.

“Search protocols were in place but it’s conceded it is almost impossible to search all fans in a crowd of nearly 8000 entering the stadium and unfortunately a small number of items did get in and were discharged.

“The club will be reviewing CCTV footage and will pass on anything which can help with any investigations Police Scotland undertake.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We are aware of a number of incidents at the Dundee v Celtic match at Dens Park on Wednesday October 31.

“While we can confirm that no arrests were made at the game or immediately afterwards, officers from the Football Co-ordination Unit for Scotland (FoCUS) are investigating the behaviour of supporters at the match, with a view to identifying those involved in criminal behaviour, and taking appropriate action in due course.”

Celtic have been approached for comment.

Celtic fans have been slammed on social media after an anti-poppy chant was heard at their match against Dundee last night.

Fans could be heard singing 'You can shove your f***ing poppy up you a**e" as their team strolled to a 5-0 win at Dens Park.

After a video posted on Twitter, one user hit out: "Their own players fought in WW1 and I bet many of their ancestors did as well. The irony."

Another said: "Disgusting, no doubt also disrespecting their own ancestors who fought bravely so they could have ‘freedom’ to sing what they like."

Celtic fans have hit the headlines in recent years over the poppy issue.

Members of the Green Brigade held up a banner in 2010 in a match against Aberdeen protesting against a 'bloodstained poppy on our hoops'.

The supporters’ group claimed the poppy had been tarnished by British military action in Iraq, Afghanistan and Ireland.

The club apologised against "the actions of this small minority" who, they said, "have no place at Celtic Park".

More than 50 contracted and former Celtic players fought in World War I, seven of whom died. William Angus was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in battle.

However in recent years, Celtic fans have railed against what some have called the increased politicisation of the poppy. Many of the club's fans come from Northern Ireland, where Remembrance Sunday can be seen by some as belonging to the Unionist tradition.

Republic of Ireland star James McClean once again reiterated his opposition to wearing the poppy, while respecting others right to do so.

The Derry-born Celtic diehard grew up on the city's Creggan estate, the same place that was home to six of the 28 unarmed civilians shot by British soldiers on Bloody Sunday in 1972 after a peaceful protest.

He chooses not to wear a poppy because it commemorates all military personnel who have died in war and not just those who were killed in the First or Second World War.

Many Celtic fans, including those opposed to military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan, feel the same way.

Some of those criticising last night's actions felt that the offensive chants marked a low point, however.

One Twitter poster said: "Quite vile. I understand if they don't want to wear one, but this is nasty."

Celtic FC is a regular supporter of Poppyscotland and for the past seven years has made a £10,000 donation to the charity.

Ahead of Remembrance Sunday last year, Celtic Foundation chief Tony Hamilton said: "“This Remembrance Sunday we remember all those who died in that war, a conflict which claimed the lives of over 16million people. It was a conflict which affected individuals, families, communities and organisations in every country caught up in the war, and Celtic Football Club was no different.

“As the world was plunged into war in 1914, all aspects of life changed and the Great War was to have its effect on Celtic and a number of its players.

“As we remember them and all fallen in all conflicts, we are pleased to continue our support of Poppyscotland through this excellent initiative.”

Celtic FC has been contacted for comment.

James Stokes was born in Crown Street, Gorbals on 6th February 1915, one of four children of George and Mary Stokes. Both parents died when James was still young, and he was sent to work on a relative's farm in Southern Ireland.

James returned to Glasgow and married Janet Kennedy who bore him a family. In 1943 he enlisted with the Royal Artillery. Whilst home on leave, James got into a fight when someone made disparaging remarks about his wife, which resulted in the thug ending up in hospital and James in a military prison.

He had the choice of spending eight years in a military prison or going to Normandy for the landings. He chose the latter.

James was in the midst of the Arnhem operation at the Lower River Maas on 1st March 1945, acting as bodyguard to a Lieutenant Banks when thay came under fire from German machine guns, ahead of their own platoon. A bullet grazed Stokes' neck, spurring him on to grab his gun and charge a German position. He returned with twelve prisoners, but this would not end the German aggression.

Stokes once again set off to take out another German machine gun post, and this time succeeded in capturing a further five Germans, but sustained a wound to the chest in the process.

With one last German gun emplacement remaining, Stokes set out for a third time to do his duty, but alas his luck ran out and he was fatally wounded, with no less than eight shots in his body.

He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. The story of Jimmy Stokes appeared in an edition of the Victor boys comic on March 13th 1965, a Celtic Supporters Club bears his name, and his VC was sold at Sotheby's for £18,000.

Are we surprised? They do it every year.

The only shock is that any of the media has raised their head above the parapet to report it.

The controversies covered by the Scottish football hacks each season could be part of a Bingo card.

- Ticket allocations (various)

- Sellick fans UEFA charge Part XXXVII but they are the bestest in the whole world

- Poppy (November)

- Lennon at it but he is depressed

- Diving (various)

- Compliance Officer / consistency

- Lennon at it again but he is the victim

- Hampden atmosphere (or lack of)

- National team are shite

- What is the plan for the future of our game

- Lennon is innocent, honest guv.

etc
